- customize >> Desktop Icons in XPI have changed my desktop icons, ie.. My Computer,
Recycle Bin, and Network Places. The icons keep changing
back to their default and the only way for me to change
them back is to keep a desktop theme saved. It seems
like when I go into anything to do with windows, like
Control Panel or a program like that they change back.
There are times it won't even save them when I reboot my
computer.
This is the first time this has happened to me and it has
been this way since I completely redone my computer a
little while ago.

- Windows XP Update >> Can't updating Sp2: error 80246008 & BITS no startHi,
I've read the many suggestions on this forum.
SP2 won't install and the history gives error 80246008.
Double clicking on BITS and trying manual or automatic [with local setting]
gives me the error code of 126.
In the summer of 2004 automatic updates stopped being accepted. Also, the
HELP feature on this computer stopped functioning around the same time.
I've got spybot S& D and am "clean".
I've hooked up to Housecall by TrendSource and am OK.
I've removed Norton last year cuz we couldn't get it to function correctly.
I tried McAffee in Jan. 2005, but couldn't get the virus portion to funtion.
It has since been removed.
I have no 3rd party conflicting programs, that I'm aware of.
I do have PC Acme [a key logger] but it isn't listed as a problem.
In this forum on 3/25/05, Patty M told Lillywhite delete the 2 files in:
C:\Documents and
Settings\AllUsers\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader.
What are these files on the computer for in the first place?
What will happen if I remove them and need them?
Can I reinstall them, if so where are they after I remove them.
I'm a computer novice, but can follow directions.
THanks, Mrs. H.

- Windows XP Network >> Home Network - can't access using share nameWe have 5 PCs connected to our home network - 4 wireless, 1 desktop.
Printer/music/media is shared from the desktop to the network.
Desktop's name is \\MAIN
All but one of the wireless PCs can access the desktop using \\MAIN but one
laptop cannot - I have to use the IP address \\192.168.xx.xxx, for example.
Problem is that if I restart the desktop it will get a new IP address from
my router, which will then require me to re-map to a new IP address from the
laptop. All of the other PCs can access \\MAIN using the "friendly" name
regardless of the IP address. Why? Can I fix this? Thanks.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Modem replacement may have problemsMy SmartLink 56 Modem failed.
I replaced it with an ESS 56H.
Used CD drivers supplied then updated them from Windows
Updted web site.
Worked fine.
I thought.
I cannot use <Modem Settings> or <V92> icons in Control
Panel.
They tell me that the Modem is not properly installed.
Question is are they looking at the old SmartLink and
were part of its software bundle or are they part of
Windows XP and it the new modem is not installed properly?
If it is the latter what could have gone wrong?
The modem will give Internet access and fax Okay.

- Windows XP >> System ToolsI don't know what happened in XP but all of a sudden all the programs listed
under Start>ProgramFiles>Accessories>SystemTools have disappeared - all
except the Character Map function. I have found the files lurking in the
System folder etc. My question is - how can I bring back the shortcuts
listed in System Tools for these :
Backup - %SystemRoot%\system32\ntbackup.exe
Disk Cleanup - %SystemRoot%\System32\cleanmgr.exe
Disk Defragmenter - %SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.msc
Files & settings Transfer - %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\usmt\migwiz.exe
System Info - "C:\Program Files\Common
Files\MicrosoftShared\MSInfo\msinfo32.exe"
System restore - %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
I can't find System Tools when in Explore and I don't know what to do. Any
help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

- Windows XP >> Start Menu EntriesHi
I have XP Pro with one user account with full administrative priviledges. I
always used the same account.
Some of the listed Start Menu>All Programs are in C:\Documents and
Settings\My\Start Menu and some in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu.
All are featured in My Start Menu>All Programs, but In order to organise
them I have to have open both folders and drag them across. Curious. Why is
this? Why are they not all in C:\Documents and Settings\My\Start Menu?
