- Windows XP Security >> How to change the firewall settingHi,
I have two questions:
1. There are two places in XP that control File and Printer sharing. One is
in the properties of Local Area Connection, and the other one is in Firewall
setting. Which one takes effect?
2. After I install Windows XP, the file and printer sharing in firewall
under Exceptions tab is unselected by default. How can I set all computers in
my domain with file and printer sharing? Using Group Policy? How to?
Any help will be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Network >> "disabled" Internet connection sharing is actually workingI have three computers using XP's internet connection
sharing and firewall and all can access the internet. It
is however strange on one of the client computer that it
displayed a "disabled" internet gateway. When I tried to
enable it, it showed connecting...connected... but
still "disabled". It however can access the internet and
only that the window messenger in this machine cannot get
connected.
History on this machine is that I have tried to uninstall
the window messenger and outlook express and then
reinstall them again. Is these related with this strange
disabled ICS while I am still able to access the internet?

- Windows XP Support >> InstallShield Wizard problemsOK bear with me , I have no idea whats going on. I think I have a problem
with my InstallShield Wizard. I can't intall some things like adobe and and
java. It gets to preparing to install and then just stops, no error messages
pop up or anything. After serching through my comp. (which I don't know much
about) I found Error code 1053 does not respond in time. I don't know what
this means or how to fix it. Can anyone help me please. I also get an error
mess. when we initially log on that say 'I can't load dll' not a specific
one, just say that. Any idea's would be wonderful

- Windows XP Network >> FTP connection problemHi,
I use Windows XP with SP1. I used to use FTP server set up
on my computer as well.
After some problems with IE I decided to use some programs
which suppose to remove any spyware, adware etc. That was
the end of my FTP server.
Other computers are able to see my computer but connection
fails. That is strange that I am able to reach my computer
from computer connected internally in home network.
I noticed two things. If my internal network is active (I
allow to use my computer connected to Internet as gate)
FTP connetion cannot be established - external computes
see me but it seems that there is some kind of time out.
The same if I turn on internal XP firewall - normally I
use Kerio (it is not a reason for my problem, with turned
off I still nothing).
Pings are ok, ports seem to be open.
Any ideas.
Thank you very much for any help.
Best regards,
Fornol

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> KB826942 locking up mutiple wireless routersI have found that after applying KB826942 to my Win XP pro system, my
wireless routers are locking up about every 30 minutes.
I have had this problem on both a USR 8022 wireless router and an SMC 7004
VWBR router (both running latest microcode) using both a Cisco 350 wireless
adapter and a USR 2216 wireless adapter.
I have the routers set to use 128 bit WEP with open authentication.
Removing this fix has stopped the problem and I am able to recreate it on
two different machines. How do I notify Microsoft of the issue with this
fix?

- Windows XP >> Search for 'A word or phrase in the file'Just started using Windows XP professional and found that
the search function is not working properly when looking
for a text string in files. In a directory with 10 files
that ** I know ** contain the text string (various strings
tried) it often comes up with many fewer, say, 1 out of 10,
or None out of 10. Has anyone else had this problem?

- Windows XP Network >> Removing Network ConnectionsI want to remove some unused connections but don't the
option to delete is greyed out.
When you right-click on:
Internet Gateway or Lan High-Speed Internet connections
for example Local Area Connection 2 the delete option is
greyed out. How do I remove unneeded connections?
- 11
- Windows XP Update >> missing proxycfg.exe and winhttps.dllI have been unable to use the Windows Update Site ever since installing the
latest Automatic Updater. When I try to get updates I get as far as the page
"Checking for the latest updates..." and not further and I am getting errors
in the WindowsUpdater.log. I found several threads that seems to describe my
problem but when I tried to run the ProxyCfd.exe too This is not found. I
obtained a copy of the tool from another PC and not is complains that
winhttps.dll is not found. I am running Windows 2000 Pro with SP4 installed
and up until about two weeks ago I was up to date on all available updates.
It would appear I am missing Windows HTTP Services but this was supposed to
be installed with SP3 and SP4. To my knowledge I have not installed
Microsoft XML SP4. Like I said this all started with the install of the new
Microsoft Updater. Can somebody tell me or provide a link to where I can
obtain Windows HTTP Services 5.1 or suggest some alternative course of action.
I do not know if this is related but many (not all) of the icons for
programs listed in the "Add/Remove Program" tool of the control panel are
also missing and this also happened at the same time.
Thank you in advance

I create a movie with music and save it to the computer. It plays back fine. When I save it to my camera I have an audio problem. I start to lose audio every so many seconds for a second or two and then it resumes again. Any one have any idea how to fix this problem?

That's usually a symptom of a hard drive needing a tune-up.... free up space
and defrag.
It also might help to copy the saved DV-AVI file to your camcorder using the
WinDV utility.... see the Digital Camcorders > Intro page for a link.

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Audio problem when saving movie to DV tape
Hello there,
It sounds as though an event is being triggered that is robbing your save to
camera operation of processor time or worse. Theoretically a data stream is a
data stream etc and so it should not happen....you need to discover what it is
that occurs with such regularity as you describe. It may be for example that
you have one of those memory programs that attempts to optimize your memories
performance. I have not yet come across one that can do that in such a way as
every programs temporary data is not lost...the kind of temporary data stored
in a buffer waiting to be sent somewhere, like your camera. Prior to finally
going out and buying a 1.5GB upgrade of DDR RAM for each machine, I used memory
optimizers on my 512MB of RAM. It works well with most other types of program
but it managed to crash Movie Maker several times and MovieDV used to lock up
on me.
There are loads of other things that can cause problems like this. If you check
on my website you will find some remarks about speed that others have found
useful. Basically what you have to do is remove any process that will grab too
much of your CPU's time, sounds simple but not always.
Whilst defragmenting your hard drive is always a useful task prior to video
capture it serves no useful purpose at all when compiling the final video. It
is not a time critical function but is access time dependent, so if the hard
drive was fragmented to an almost impossible degree all that would happen is
that Movie Maker simply sits there waiting for the next command to process a
bit more data. A hard drive would have to yet again be fragmented to an all but
impossible degree for the seek time of the heads to adversely affect the
straight transfer of data to the buffer waiting to be sent to the camera at a
fixed rate of approx 13GB per hour which is equal to 291KB a second, if your
hard drive is set at DMA Mode 5 (Most common speed nowadays) it is capable of
transferring up to 100MB a second .....so even if there was some moderately
heavy fragmentation it would still not be all that great an issue and it
certainly would not be an issue such that it occurred at regular intervals.
You will find a useful dialog on my website with some pointers on how to make
sure your hard drive(s) are working as expected in the FAQ section

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Audio problem when saving movie to DV tape
I have been having the same problem lately after a few weeks of successful
transfers... I also have the issue of the movie on my camera moving in slow
motion at times. I have been trying to figure it out for weeks. Tried
everything from changing tape brands to replacing cables. No luck but maybe
someone can help.

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Audio problem when saving movie to DV tape
My movie is saved to tape and even as it is being saved I can hear the
stutters on the audio. I first thought it was only where stills were added
in but it happens at seemingly irregular times throughout the movie though I
think it is always as a clip is ending/beginning. All audio is aved to media
player library then imported to collection. I have saved the same movie to
PC and in media player the sound is spot on. I have captued movie both by
letting the wizard switch on my camera that gave terrible pixellation and
following advice from this forum then captured after setting the camera
going. That seemed to be a different format - the icon was different? That
gave great visual clarity but the audio still stutters during saving to tape
and on playback through tv.
I have now edited the movie 3 times which is great experience that I could
have done without.
Thanks in advance.

Try copying the saved DV-AVI file from your hard drive to your tape using
the WinDV utility.... there's a link to it on the Digital Camcorders > Intro
page of my website. The utility uses a larger buffer which helps the process
go smoothly.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Help with scrolling creditsThis is the first time using WMM2 and after getting my video imported I
decided to make some credits but soon reliazed a draw back. The credit
animation I want to use is the Scroll, Up Stacked. What I am needing to do
is get a list of people who are all in one group listed in the credits but
when I enter in the text there is a large gap between the members names. Let
me give you a example.
I want to add a group named Committe Members and have 7 different names
listed. The credit title page where you can enter in the information is
layed out like a spread sheet with two columns. I entered in "Committe
Members" on the left hand column and on the right side column I entered in
the first member (John for this example.) I then entered the second member
on the line below John (row 2 right side column) and lets use Mary for this
one. The result looks like this
Committe Members
John
Mary
But what I want it to do is look like this
Committe Members
John
Mary
I can't seem to figure out how to do this or if it is even a option. I have
tried to do a CTRL-Enter as in most cases this lets you enter a line break
when enter is mapped do a different function but this does nothing.

- Windows XP Network >> Copying SettingsDoes anyone know if you have a network of mixed OS's, say WinXP home, WinXP

redundant the Win9x machines. Say you have one WinXP with a good setup, can
you backup the settings and transfer them to the rest of the WinXP home
machines so that they are all equal. I realise that you would have to
rename the rest of the machines before you re-connect to the network.
Does that make any sense??

- Windows XP Hardware >> can't find IDE drive to install XPHi there,
I installed a new Asus P5LD2-VM and I have the CD Rom hooked up to the
secondary red controller.
The IDE hard drive is connected to the primary blue (80 pin) controller but
when the XP CD boots up, it says it can't find a hard drive.
At the BIOS, it lists the hard drive as being there, but yet the XP install
comes up with it saying that it can't find the hard drive.
I know this board has SATA connectors on it, but I'd like to be able to use
the IDE hard drive as the boot drive.
Any ideas??

- Windows XP Setup >> move files from 98se sys to new XP sysSubject: move files from 98se sys to new xp os
I am setting up a new home pc with Win XP. My old system
ran Win 98se. I would like to move some old files from
98se system to new PC that will run XP. I was hoping to
install XP on my new, clean HD as a master and then slave
my old HD (with the 98se), and then just transfer the data
that I wanted to keep. Can I have a master drive with XP
installed and a slave with 98se? Will the new system look
at the 98se reg/boot files at startup or will the startup
only process the reg/boot info from the master? Would
this be treated like a second partition? If the old HD
was a bootable drive, will it still have to be recognized
as bootable? If I want to leave the old drive in the new
system for data only, are there still minimum "system"
files that will need to be kept or could I keep just
the "My documents" folder? Thanks.
