- Windows XP Setup >> Upgrading (install) from current Win2000 Pro to WinXP - stable ?I am considering purchase of Win XP Pro Upgrade software. I am
currently running Win 2000 Pro. I have a small home LAN; 2 machines
networked via WorkGroup: W2K - Win NT Server 4.
My main concerns are problems with Profiles, applications, registry on
Win2000 machine after doing auto-upgrade to XP. I want to keep my
current profiles, shortcuts, and applications (Start menu, etc) with
new XP install.
Has anyone experienced "any" problems at all upgrading Win2000 Pro ->

- Windows XP Support >> Missing icons and menus ... ANNOYING. Help!!I normally don't post binaries or links to them as images but I have to show

I have absolutely no idea how this happened, but my start menu no longer
displays icons next to any shortcuts or folder items. Then, my Quick Launch
toolbar has all the items there, but no icons and each item appears as a
very tiny button when moving the mouse over them. I also notice I cannot
switch my Folder Views to anything but Large Icons. If I select "List" from
the View menu, I simply still get Large Icons displayed. The menu bars in
Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are there, but are blank. I can click
in certain places and bring the menus up but I can't see "File" "Edit"
"View" etc ... as if the fonts were "clear".
I have double-checked all settings as far as themes/appearance font size,
colors, etc. I've tried reverting to classic mode. I am not new to computers
whatsoever but this problem has me stumped and it's really annoying. No
viruses, no ad-ware either. This all happened at once. Only thing I've done
today is installed the Microsoft .NET 2.0 SDK and Visual Studio 8. Removing
those didn't help either. I have rebuilt icons in TweakUI. Doesn't help.
Reinstalled vid drivers, rebooted. Nothing.
Help!!

- Windows XP Setup >> My Windows XP has become odd after re-installing itI had a virus, and it annoyed me so much, i re-installed Windows XP. However,
now i have installed it again, it's become ever so weird. It's Xp S2, but it
didn't have the windows built in wireless driver, i had to use an old intel
one to get online, all the sounds are 'beeps' rather than the normal XP ones
i had before. Also, the screen resolution seemed blurier than before, and
slightly bigger, and when i scroll down an internet page quickly, it jolts
slightly before moving down, and it never used to do that before. I've
checked my screen resolution in control panel and i only have the options of
600x800 and the one i'm using now.
Anyone know what's happened? Or is there a Windows XP update, which might
solve these problems?

Windows XP Support >> Online Registrations - A Rant.
Hi,
I ran DOS 6, for YEARS, and
never had to reinstall the OS,
except when a HDD wore out.
I don't remember EVER
keeping a spare copy of the OS,
because another re-install is
always a few weeks away.
WinXP, and the internet, has
turned using a computer, into a
full-time occupation.
I don't suppose DOS 6, would
be any better off, against
sabotage; but at least I could
look at the file dates, and
sizes, and know what to replace.
I'm also running a fee for
service, firewall/AV app
recommended by MS - and not only
has it - not - solved my
problems; but it fails to accept
the software key, and when it
accepted it, on my backup copy of
Windows; it is reading a
two-year subscription, as a one
year subscription!
I'm running a fee for
service, spyware application, but
"hackers" seem to have no trouble
constantly destroying my
settings, and making Windows die
young.
And the anti-spyware, may be
what's killing my chkdsk
utility.
SFC seems like a step, in
the right direction, but it is
falling short.
sfc /scannow isn't helping.
Now, I just did a re-install
of WinXP, trying to fix my
primary copy, and wear, and
handling, have brought the CD, to
such a state, that it's not
reading netcomm.dll, and
msoe.dll.
And even after this latest
re-install, My primary copy,
still won't connect to my ISP.
Y'no - I don't have a
single "internet-aware"
application - that works as well
as the old DOS applications did.
(Actually works.)
I ran Desqview, and got all
of the benefits I've found so
far, in WinXP - and only
reinstalled it, when a hard drive
went belly-up.
(Pre-internet.)
Maybe we need a law - that
software cannot require, or use
an internet connection, to do
anything resembling the
validation of software, over a
live connection ?
REALLY(!) Sick of badly written
software,
Ken .

Dos 6 was slightly less complicated than Windows XP. It fit on a couple of
floppies. Just a few less files to check. It was susceptible to many
viruses. The Internet would a lot less useful in text mode. There are text
mode browsers available for Linux if you want to see for yourself. You are
comparing apples and oranges. You may prefer the tates of one but in the end
they are very different things.

- Windows XP Support >> TV/Text cardsI removed an AIMS lab card from my old PC (Win98), installed it in new PC

- Windows XP Network >> windows xp p2p networking problem. Can anyone help???
I had a winxp pro desktop and a win2000 laptop machine
that network fine together. I could see the network, use
all the shares on both machines etc.
I have just bought a new laptop which also runs winxp
pro. I can get it to see the workgroup, sometimes even
see the 2 machine names in 'entire network' (this depends
upon which machine is turned on first). However, I cannot
see or use any shares from either machine.
Can anybody point me to a solution. I have netbios turned
on as directed by kb article 318030. Hasn't helped.
My setup is as follows :
* Desktop running winxp pro (fully up to date using win
update). IP address dynamically assigned
* Laptop running win xp pro sp1. IP address dynamically
assigned
* router acting as DHCP server
Help if you can. I have tried everything I can think of.

- Windows XP Setup >> How to Disable MMC.EXE acting as a server? (Microsoft Management Console)I've managed to close all the listening ports using online guides, and the
utilities at GRC.COM.
However, if I click Start -> Run -> type DCOMCNFG and hit OK. When the
Microsoft Management Console opens, I click on "Components" but then Zone
Alarm prompts asking if I want to allow Microsoft Management Console to act
as a server program. Whether I deny or allow access, TCP ports 135 and 1030
are opened regardless.
The IP address it's trying to connect to is 0.0.0.0 which, as I understand
it, is Loopback(?) in other words it's trying to connect to itself, and not
a remote system?
What confuses me even more is that Steve Gibson says on his Website
(GRC.COM) that *ONLY* Task Scheduler, MSDTC or DCOM will cause TCP 135 to
open. I know for certain I have DCOM and Task Scheduler disabled, but MSDTC
no longer appears in the Services window so I cannot be 100% sure.
This occurs both before AND after I've freshly re-installed WindowsXP Pro,
applied SP1 and installed Zone Alarm (free). Network card disabled in BIOS,
no Internet connection set up.
Why does MMC need to act as a server? How can I disable it from even trying?

- Windows XP Update >> In preparation for Vista SP1...<QP>
Tomorrow, Tuesday 8 January, we are releasing several non-security update
packages via Windows Update. The updates include the regular monthly
Malicious Software Removal Tool and Windows Mail Junk Mail Filter, two
updates in our regular series of Windows Vista updates (KB943302 for
application compatibility and KB943899 for reliability and performance), and
one update of particular notice: KB935509. Similar to previous updates that
enhanced Windows Vista?s performance and reliability, these updates will be
distributed automatically through Windows Update.
Tomorrow?s KB935509 release is a little different than past updates. It is
a prerequisite for installing SP1 and is applicable only for Windows Vista
Ultimate and Enterprise users, because it only affects versions of Windows
Vista supporting BitLocker Drive Encryption.
This update modifies the boot loader to enable successful install or
uninstall of the service pack if the PC uses BitLocker encryption. We?re
releasing it now to lay the groundwork for future updates and to eliminate
any extra reboots by installing it along with updates that already require a
reboot. For more information on the update, see KB article KB935509 (which
will be posted on Tuesday morning).
In addition to KB985509, there are two other updates that will be
prerequisites for Windows Vista SP1, for all versions of Windows Vista.
They will be released at a later date and will improve the installation
experience and reliability for the service pack as well as for individual
update packages.
SP1 development and testing efforts are continuing as expected and we remain
on track for its release later this quarter.
</QP>
