- Windows XP Network >> network not resolving users names in Manage in WINDOWS XP PROThe issue I have is this.
I have several models of PC, diff mfg, with Gigabit nics in them. Once I
put my windows XP image on the PC, under computer management under local
users and groups, my network users are not being resolved into there proper
names. ex. domain\Domain admins, or even domain\userID.
What will appear is the list of users, that look like this:
?234937213974213830
It will be like this for each of my users.
Like this I am not able to log onto the system and network.. very bad.
Know... when I DISABLE Media Sensing... it will work fine.. all my users get
resolved into what they should be.
I dont WANT to Disable Media sensing as I have a ton of mobile users that
need connectivity from office to office. If I disable media sensing, they
will need to reboot there PC everytime. AND THEY DONT WANT TO. Plus were
installing Wireless, and it would be nice just to pick up there PC and move
it where ever they want.
Any suggestions out there as to what I need to do. OTHER then keep Media
sensing disabled ?

our organisation is changing to XP and our users have no
administration rights for their PCs.
If one user changes in calc.exe to scientific mode, calc.exe does not
remember this and starts the next time again in normal mode.
Any solution for this?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> PC Booster SoftwareI am now using XP after using ME (upgraded). My computer
seems to be a lot slower with XP on it, and I have seen
some articles about PC BOOSTER software which claims to
increase the speed of your computer and stop crashing and
so forth. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if these
products are safe to use or will I be inviting trouble
fiddling with the computer. Also if I was to run it would
I be able to un-run it and get back to being slow again if
I don't like what it has done to my computer? Can anyone
give me a suggestion?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Do I need the Intel INF Utility for SATA?I am curious if I need to install the Intel INF file Utility on my Windows XP Pro (Build
2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 : Service Pack 1)? Currently running fine but I'm not using any
USB2.0 devices or SATA HDs yet.
My P4(800) Springdale Chipset system is up-to-date with all the Windows XP Service Packs,
Driver Updates and Critical Updates found at the Windows Update page. My SATA and USB 2.0
controllers show up in Device Manager without problems. However, my mainboard manufacturer's
website has an Intel INF Utility posted for my board (a DFI PS83-BL using the latest BIOS)
and I've pasted this Utility's Readme file description below.
Also, my mainboard BIOS offers an "enhanced" mode option for enabling SATA which is supposed
to allow for "both" SATA Channels plus 4 PATA devices (2 masters and 2 slaves) from the
regular IDE controller. Furthermore, you can also choose to flip the SATA devices from 0 to
1 and 1 to 0.
I've emailed DFI many months ago several times about this but something must be getting lost
in translation, as they have never responded.
I searched newsgroups for this topic with Google which yield both "yes" and "maybe" answers.
Also some postings seem to warn about "switching from PATA to SATA on existing WinXP
installations." I get the feeling that something really bad will happen if I did that, so
I'm concerned because I need to upgrade to larger HDs. I would like to get a pair of SATA
160 Gb units. I plan to clone my existing PATA HDs using DriveImage7 and then switch to the
SATA connectors (which will also free up the standard onboard IDE controller for my DVD,
Burner and Zip drives).
Currently running with 2 - PATA 60 Gb Maxtors, each set as a master from the motherboard's
standard IDE controller (only WinXP Pro ... no other operating systems):
HD #1 - C and D (C Drive Primary Booting with D as a logical, both NTFS);
HD #2 - E and F (both logicals for data files and image backups, both NTFS)
Is this a bad thing to try and do I need the Intel INF file Utility installed prior to doing
this?
BTW, I thought WinXP (with the latest Service Packs) already supported SATA, USB2.0, etc
hardware? Is there a way under Device Manager, etc where I can check to see if my drivers,
etc could benefit from running the Intel INF Utility listed below:

- Windows XP Network >> cannot query tcp/ip settings for connectionI am getting the error "Cannot Query TCP/IP settings for
connection". My wireless network does not seem to be
working on one of my XP Pro computers. When i click
repair, i get that error, because the status of the network
(tcp,subnet,etc) all say "<unavailable>". What could be
cousing TCP/IP not to be working and my recieving that message?

win98 machine. everything works fine and then myteriously
the network connect is lost and the entire network has to
be reconfigured. this has happened multiple times.

- Windows XP Network >> Copy files from one computer to another!I have two computers, one has Windows 2000 Pro installed
on it, and the other has Windows XP Pro. I have a router,
with each of the computers connected to the router via
ethernet nic's. How do I go about copying files from one
computer to the other? Your help will be greatly

- Windows XP Security >> Windows Update Error 0x80072EFDHi
Just attempted to install latest Windows update feature.
However during the initial download of the the update I
chickened out and cancelled the download. After reviewing
the Windows update feature I decided to give it another
try. While my computer was being analyzed to establish
whaat updates were required I recieved the following error
No 0x80072EFD. There is are similar errors posted by
Microsoft to troubleshoot this problem but none with the
same error No:
Any help appreciated in resolving this problem as I cannot
update Windows (although maybe this is not such a bad
thing)

- Windows XP >> Lock UpI reciently tried to install a program and when I rebooted,
the computer starts up, goes into the Desk Top
and about 10 Seconds later nothing works...
the mouse moves and the keybord is not locked up, but I
cannot click on anything or control Alt Delete will not
work.. any suggestions?

- Windows XP Support >> Chkdsk problemI recently performed a Windows XP repair install on my system and,
fortunately, the install went well. The only problem I have found is that I
am now unable to run Chkdsk.. When I go to perform a scan via Tools on C:
properties, I am given the message "Windows was unable to complete the disk
check."
I have tried to run Chkdsk through the command prompt but receive a message
telling me that Chkdsk does not work on NTFS volumes - although I never had
this problem before the repair install.
Can anyone guide me in the right direction? The Microsoft website hasn't
been very helpful.

- Windows XP Support >> Need Help with Microsoft Management Console (MMC)I have two machines, one on my left and one on my right.
By design I have named the machines LEFT and RIGHT :<)
The machines are LAN'ed together via a router and are able to share
each others folders in their root directories just fine. So my
network must be set up okay.
I want to try using Remote Management, and am trying to set up MMC to
do so. On LEFT machine, I brought up MMC (via command line) and went
to 'Add/Remove Snap-in', clicked on 'Add', and added 'Local Users and
Groups'. It asked me to name the computer I wanted to manage and so I
wanted to choose machine RIGHT. So I chose 'Another computer' and
'browse'. I then clicked on 'Advance' and 'Find Now'. It found LEFT
and RIGHT in Workgroup MSHOME, and I selected RIGHT. MSHOME\RIGHT
then showed in the select computer window. I then clicked on OK
and Finish. I immediately got the error 'Unable to access the
computer RIGHT. Access is denied'.
What have I missed?

Administrator
Administrator.MICRON
All Users
All Users.WINNT
Anonymous
anonymous.MICRON
Default.User
Default User.WINNT
What do you call the concept that these sub folders refer to?
"Profiles"? "Users"? "I.D.s"? For now I'll call them "Users" for
lack of the proper term.
Trouble is, important data and program files have somehow gotten
scattered around amongst all of these different "Users."
I am the only user of this computer and so would like to have all of
my data and program files together in a single "User."
How may I sort out this mess?

P.S. As for the question of how my Documents and Settings folder got
so scrambled up in the first place, I only have part of the answer.
One cause was that I first installed Windows 2000 as an upgrade to
Windows 98. But that installation became so unstable that I tried a
clean install of Windows 2000.

- Windows XP >> System restore, where are the back up filesAfter being unable to get into windows, I did a system
restore using the restore cd. Now I need to know where
it backed up the files to, so I can get them back. Did
it remove all of my programs? In the restore section,
going through windows, it won't let me pick another date
to restore from, I was going to just go back to another
day.
Any advice would be appreciated.

configuration, and other options, but never get to a prompt where I ca
recover the corrupted system files.

print to the pinter connected to the XP. File sharing is
working fine in both directions. XP is printing fine.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Search Engine Opening Out of Order?Every time I go to open a file folder the Windows XP "SEARCH" engine keeps
popping up instead. It took me a while to notice that "OPEN" had been replaced
by "SEARCH" as the primary function at the top of the box under the "FILE"
function command (?) list {what is the right name for those boxes under "File,
etc., etc. etc., etc. ..."}. Can I swap "SEARCH" for "OPEN" in some way, or
remove it from the list of "Command Functions" altogether (or at least place it
toward the bottom in a standby position)?
I know this sounds silly, and it was my own damned fault for not slapping my
hand when fiddling with important functions. Unfortunately, it has gone beyond
"SYSTEM RESTORE", I did something to make "SEARCH" a _permanent_ feature on the
list. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
