My computer isn't detecting disks

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> My computer isn't detecting disks Hey, my computer isn't detecting disks in its drive. I believe that it is the
C Drive, but I'm not sure. It's the drive where you would put CDs and
CD-ROMs. For a couple weeks, it hasn't been detecting any music CDs I've put
in for download or any of the CD-ROMs. Nothing happens. Can anyone help me?
Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

CD-ROM is usually the D: drive (although it can be any letter up to Z, but
it cannot taker on a drive letter the same as the operating system)
The problem may be a faulty CD-ROM drive. Firstly, when you boot your
machine does the CD-ROM light come on? If it does then power is getting to
the CD-ROM. Next when you insert a CD into your CD-ROM does the light come
on again? If so does the drive begin to spin? If the drive doesn't spin or
the light doesn't come on you may need to check inside the pc to see if the
cables to the CD-ROM have not come loose.

CD drives have a useful life of four years, depending upon the amount of use
they get.. after four years, luck plays a part in whether your computer can
read off or write to CD's..

Of course, it is not unknown for CD drives to fail anywhere between new and
four years.. try a CD cleaner in the drive, and if that doesn't help, get
yourself a new optical drive.. DVD-RW drives are quite cheap these days..
