- Windows XP >> multiple users & internet accessI recently upgraded to Windows XP Home Edition and set it
up with multiple users, myself as administrator. The
internet connection is in my name, but I amended the
setup so it should be used for all users.
Problem: when other users click on Internet Explorer, an
error message box appears stating they have insufficient
rights to run the Internet Connection Wizard and denies
them access. I do not have that problem.

- Windows XP >> Windows labels DVD Writer as "CD Drive"Starting today, windows XP SP2 is showing my Benq DVD drive as a "CD
Drive" in My Computer. The drive seems to work just fine (reads CDs
and DVDs) but the label is wrong. I have tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the drive but it still says that it is a CD Drive. How
can I fix this? Thanks.

- Windows XP Network >> Remove a wireless network for homeIn the past, I tried to set up a wireless network at home. Now I don't want
it anymore.
Everytime I click on 'Set up a wireless network for a home or a small
office', there is always the option 'add a computer to 'Reseau1''... I want
to get rid of that, and start fresh...
How can I do that? How can I get rid of the old wireless network?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> File delete problemA downloaded avi file on my pc refuses to be deleted. The
error says "It is being used by another person or program"
which is not the case. I have tried removing all other
files from the directory and then deleting the directory
but this returns much the same error.
I also cannot rename the file or move it.
Most puzzling.

- Windows XP Security >> access to folders deniedUpon noticing that my hard drive in my laptop was
going bad, i removed it and put it in a portable hard
drive case so that i could access its files via USB.
Unfortunately i do not have access to folders that
were stored on the desktop. Is there a way to get around
this "access denied" message so that i can save my
very imporant data before the drive crashes?
I do not have the option of the "security"
tab in the properties of these folders; and so I cannot
set the owners that are allowed access this. Is there
another way to allow access to move or even copy this
folder?

- Windows XP >> gdiplus fix: HP Software Update reported Installation failed in SP1, but direct install workedIn case others have had this gdiplus installation failed problem
I found a partial workaround. On WinXP SP1 (not SP2)
HP Software Update was repeatedly reporting Installation failed
when trying to install
Critical Update to resolve a potential security risk condition
This update was the gdiplus fix described in MS04-028.mspx.
For some reason my Win XP SP1 had unfixed gdiplus.dll
despite Windows Update having been run last year,
and despite my own manual installs of the fix from Microsoft.
MBSA 2 did not report any missing security updates (except SP2 as
usual).
I first searched for all gdiplus.dll and found that although there
was a fixed gdiplus.dll in the OFFICE folder there were also two
unfixed files in HP folders and one in C:/windows/system32/,
so I ran HP Software Update, which failed with this popup:
FEAD(R) 2.5 Optimizer(C)
HP has detected a corrupt file (checksum error). The program has been
closed without installing. Please contact HP to report this problem.
Repeating the update after rebooting gave the same error.
I gave up searching for the cause or any fix, and went to
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Home.jsp
and searched for
"Critical Update to resolve a potential security risk condition"
and found
GdiplusUpgrade_Rev1.1.exe
from HP:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=oj-37641-1
After downloading and running, I found it had fixed not only the
two HP gdiplus files but also the /system32/ file (I did dir /s and
checked each one).
I then ran a MBSA 2 scan which told me:
* I had not updated to SP2 (I know, I'm delaying until I have a good
backup)
* No security updates are missing.
Administrative Vulnerabilities
* No incomplete software update installations were found.
Off topic for this xp group, I did find that the HP fix had somehow
dropped Overland.cab containing an unfixed gdiplus inside!
But that's a matter for a hp group.
I'd be interested in any comments or similar experiences. I was
surprised that
my PC had unfixed gdiplus after I'd always been running Windows Update
manually
for all security fixes and using MBSA to double check.

- Windows XP Hardware >> rundll errorI don't know a whole lot about computers, but whenever I
start mine up, I get the following:
RUNDLL
Error loading
c:\windows\downloadedprogramfiles\bridge.dll module not
found.
What does that mean?? The computer seems to run fine, I
just don't know what it means, and it bugs me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much ~ Julie

- Windows XP Setup >> XP Sysprep File loses windows product keyHi i have a sysprep file with no problems except the windows key. - Windows XP >> Setting up 2nd user's accountAfter setting up an account for another user, which was no
problem, I tried to switch to that user and everytime I
receive a message that a program has a problem and must
be shut down. It is not always the same program but the
program is always from the 'PREFETCH' file folder in the
Windows folder(example: vidcompat.exe). I never get this
message when logging into my own account. The new
account is also setup as an administrator. The biggest
problem this causes is that when my computer is restarted
after being powered down, I have to reboot and startup in
safe mode 1 or 2 times. While in safe mode I change
nothing, I may open the control panel and then close it
again or I may do nothing more that restart the computer.
After doing this a couple of times the system starts up
properly. If I do not log in to the other user's
account, just go into my account, and power the system
down then the next time I start my computer I have no
problems. The rebooting only happens after a session in
which the other users account has been logged into. I
tried deleting the other user and creating a new account
but the same trouble exists.

- Windows XP >> help with invisible folders ???With my settings checked for "show hidden files" and unchecked for "Hide
protected operating system files", I have lost a lot of folders under my
Michael folder in "Documents and Settings" ... the most noticeable ones that
are missing are "Application Data" and "local settings"... but there are
several gone. There is information in my Application data that I need to

Does anyone know how I can get those folders to show again? I've tried
clicking "restore defaults", but that doesn't seem to help.

- Windows XP >> Number of windows limitation in XP?I have windows XP SP2 and 4GB of RAM. I like to run lots of Applications at
once (call me a manic multitasker). I seem to always get to a point where I
can no longer open more programs. I either get no error, or sometimese
errors like, "unable to get windows handle." I used to think it was a
memory issue but since I currently have 4GB and am no where near using it all
up, it has to be something else. The Video Card? An XP limitation?
Anybody know what is going on with this?
Computer Dell 9150, 4GB Ram, 368GB Free disk space, ATI X600 w/ 256MB
running dual monitors.

- Windows XP >> PrefetchingMy system takes over 2 minutes to boot up. I just ran
bootvis.exe and it shows that 55 seconds are being used
for "prefetching". I understand that prefetching is
supposed to speed up the boot process, but in my case it
is definitely not helping. Is there any way to turn off
prefetching? Thanks for your help.
P.S. I have been to blackviper.com and he says com + event
system is tied to prefetching. I have it disabled, could
that possibly cause the long prefetch time during bootup?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Lexar Jumpdrive & Windows ExplorerI recently got a Lexar USB Jumpdrive. This unit works
great on my home system. Once plugged into the USB hub
Windows Explorer sees it as a LEXAR JUMPDRIVE in the
drive pane. My notebook is another story. Once the drive
is placed in the USB port, Windows reports the drive via
the default tone, but FAILS to add this drive in either
My Computer or in Windows Explorer.
How can I get my XP Pro on my notebook to recognise the
Jumpdrive the same way the home system does?
Many Thanks

- Windows XP Setup >> XP Promblems/NightmaresOn 11-24-03 I installed the home upgrade version of
Windows XP. Formerly, I was using Windows Me. I thought
this new system would solve problems, but instead it has
created more.
When attempting to access Money 2000 from my desktop
shortcut I get the following message:
"Money cannot locate 'C:\Documents and Settings\HP
Authorized Custom\My Money' or cannot open it, possible
because it is a read only file. You can change the read
only attribute in the Windows Explorer. If you have
chosedn the correct file and it cannot be accessed, you
will need to open your most recent backup file.
If the file is being used by another application chose it
in the other application, close it in the other
application, and try again."
I ended up copying the backup from floppy discs, but I
have lost 15 days of data. Is there anyway of location
this information on my hard drive?
When I am connected to the internet for 15 to 20 minutes I
get the following message:
"The system is shutting down. Save all unsaved files.
This is initiated by NT Authority/System.
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)service terminated
unexpectatedly."
My system then restarts. This the most frustrating of my
problems. How do I fix this problem?

- Windows XP Support >> MSI isn't installing or uninstalling programsI noticed a couple of days ago when I was trying to install MS Project 2003
that I am having a problem installing and uninstalling programs. It appears
that msiexec isn't working properly. I get a message saying that the
installation package could not be opened. When I look at the install log I
see error 1619. I am unable to install any program that uses msi and I am
unable to uninstall any program that uses msi. Also when I attempt to
install the MSI Cleanup Utility it gives me an error 1324 saying that the
C:Program Files folder path contains an error. I have tried installing a new
version on installer (3.1) but it didn't help. I have also tried doing a
system restore to just get rid of the problem, but my restores don't go back
far enough.
I've searched Google for two days and haven't seen anything similar to this
problem. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Network >> Problems logging in to Windows 2003 domainHello:
We manage several hundred client networks. None of these client network are
connected. They are separate customers. All of the networks are very
similar in that most are Windows 2003 domains, Windows XP desktops, Exchange
2003, WSUS deployments SQL, etc. A very typical Microsoft setup. Recently,
we have seen a spike in a very specific issue - a very significant spike.
At about 10-20% of our client sites over the past 1-2 months, users have
been having an issue logging in. When they initially login in the morning,
they don't get their desktop. In other words, they type in their username
and password, press enter, it goes thru the applying settings stuff, then
they just stare at a blank desktop. They can wait 1 minute or an hour, but
the desktop never appears. They then press CTRL-ALT-DEL, select Logoff, and
RE-login, and they can login perfectly fine in a few seconds.
Unfrotunately, we have not been able to narrow this down much. In all cases
that we have sampled, there are no errors or warnings in the Application or
System log at the time of login. There are varying login scripts at each
site, but we have verified the login scripts all run to completion.
Although I can't say for certain, all desktops are Windows XP SP2 as we keep
up to date pretty regularly. The problem is intermittant in that it will
happen to USER-A one day, then USER-B the next, but not USER-A. As noted
these are different networks and it's happening at multiple sites.
I certainly don't expect someone to come up with the a wiz-bang answer
(although that would be nice), but we are at the end of our troubleshooting
method. I need some better logging info than the Eventlogs and ECHOing
lines in a login batch file to a text file. How can we better troubleshoot
the Windows XP login process to a Windows 2003 domain? If you do have any
suggested solutions or known issues, that would be great too.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
RichF
