- Windows XP Network >> Question on IIS, Framework 1.1 and ICSI am running XP Pro with SP2 on PC1, and XP Home with SP2 on PC2. Both PC
are connected thru wired Ethernet and share a dial up 56k connection thru
ICS.
If I install IIS and Framework on the Host PC--XP Pro PC, will I have any
problems with ICS and the XP Home PC since IIS cannot be installed on the XP
Home machine?
I have installed all updates on both machines except Framework and I was
just wondering if problems would occur with my ICS connection or Ethernet
connection if IIS cannot be installed on both? I am also running Office XP
on the Pro PC and Office 2000 Standard on the XP Home PC. Outlook is being
used for email on both machines.

- Windows XP >> kazaa does not starti know this newgroup is specifically for windows and it is a bit awkward to ask a question about kazaa. but i do not know any place where i can ask this kind of question. i recently downloaded kazaa lite. but when i start the program it is stuck. i only see the borders of the screen. and finally i have to "end task" the program. i tried all the versions of kazaa lite from several sources but the problem remains the same. i meanwhile tried Kazaa media Desktop which DID WORK on my pc. but only kazaa lite does not work.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> System ShutdownI have a problem that just started today when I am in the
middle of a Word Document I suddenly get a message (with a
large red "X") that the system is shutting down by "NT
Authority/System". It then shuts itseelf down and

- Windows XP Network >> RPCService shuts down xpAfter installing windows xp home in a Titan laptop and
setting up dial-up using the wizard the computer will
access the isp but the display lights in the system tray
show continuous activity. This is a clean install of XP
home and the HD was fdisked and reformatted NTSF prior to
install. After about 3-4 minutes a system shutdown
message appears indicating that the system is shutting
down by NT Authority/System. 1 minute is allowed to save
work and then the system is shut down and reboots.
The modem is a Zoom V92. This happens on any isp
connection which is used.n
The Titan is a model 7521T, Bios is Phoenix. XP is home
version 2002. No updates have been attempted.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> vcd to where?I have some CD's that contain VCD recordings. I believe they were made from
VHS tapes using Hauppauge software and their video card. They will play on
my PC using the Windows Media Player. There is no way they will play using
my Panasonic DVD player-recorder.
This may not be the right place for this question, but, I have exhausted
every other avenue.
Is there any way these recordings can be converted to DVD format so as to
enjoy on the DVD player. The original VHS tapes have been destroyed.
HELP! PLEASE

- Windows XP Setup >> F6 doesn't see the USB drive -no floppyHello,
I've installed XP on a quite a few computers but never learned the trick to
get around F6 on setup to install drivers for the S-ATA controller if the
system does not have a floppy drive. I can bring a floppy to my clients in
case but it would be great if I could specify my usb thumb drive. Some
systems do not have drivers for certain S-ATA controllers such as various
Promise models.
I know I have that issue on my own system - MSI FIS2R with a SATA 378
controller - ulsata.sys. I know I've tried various options - so far
haven't figured out the right one.

connection shows a false password. In IE6 Tools/Internet
options/connections/settings, password when changed to
correct value, reverts immediately to false. Means that I
have to fill in password in DUC window each time I want
to reach my ISP. Suggestions? Many thanks!

- Windows XP >> XP Home/cable modem loses connectivityHi,
XP Home Edition, Cable modem, 1.8 ghz processor, 512 RAM,
Symantec Internet Security Suite (Norton's AntiVirus).
I got my cable modem configured, and everything worked OK
for months. While building a second PC, I took the NIC
out of the first PC temporarily. When I reinstalled it
in the first PC, it lost all connectivity to the
Internet. I worked with Adelphia on it - the only fix
was to reinstall XP - and all my other applications.
Now, I've done it again. :^( Whenever I start XP, it
says my network cable is unplugged. It isn't, and I do
have a Link light on the modem. The receive light
flashes, and the IP address/DNS, etc. are correct. I
cannot ping any domain names.
Is there a registry hack or something I can do to prevent
having to reinstall everything ?
Thanks,
Lannie

- Windows XP >> Thinkpad keyboardI upgraded from Win 98 to XP pro. When I have the
computer docking and use an external keyboard, everything
is fine. When I take it off, the numberpad, on the
keyboard works and cuts out the letters. I can't get it
to work properly (and no, the num lock is not on at that
point) I can't locate anything from windows suport, or
IBM suport that shows this problem. Any help would be
appriciated.

- Windows XP >> ActiveX ControlsThis week I started having problems with several web sites I visit.
When I click on an item and go to a new page I get the following message:
Your current Security Settings prohibit running ActiveX controls. As a
result, the page may not display correctly. (I have not changed any of my
settings recently)
I can't go any further with the page and I have to use Ctrl + alt + delete
to close the page.
Earlier this week I installed from Microsoft Widows Update KB831167 and I
think that might have something to do with my problem, but I can't find a
"Uninstall" for it.
Any ideas?
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> VPN help neededI have a task that has been given me for which I am having trouble working
out a solution.
While I have quite a bit of LAN experience, my WAN knowledge is rather
limited.
I have a network currently setup as follows:
DSL Internet --> DSL Router
DSL Router ---> Hub ---> Server 1
| \--> Workstation
|
\--> Switch ---> Server 2
\--> 8 Workstations
***** Here's what I *NEED* to be able to do:
1> I have to find a way for people in an office 20 miles away to have a
remote connection to one of the Workstations on Server 2's workgroup.
2> I would like to not purchase any additional software.
3> Both locations have broadband internet connections.
4> I think a VPN connection would work best for this project, but I am
unsure how to set one up, especially through a router.
NOTES:
All computers are new Dell desktops running WinXP Pro with all the latest
service packs and hotfixes installed.
Server 1 and the one workstation HAVE to be a specific workgroup name.
Server 2 and the associated 8 workstations HAVE to be a different specific
workgroup name.
The Router is a 3COM OfficeConnect Secure Router 3CR860-95.
I have two static IP's available for use from my ISP.
The computers on the remote location are all running Windows 2000 Pro and
are part of a domain with an old NT 4.0 server.
I've seen you guys work miracles with other tech problems posed here. I'm
hoping for some of that help to come my way.
Thanks in advance,
Brian Beckers

- Windows XP >> no dialup on ie openHi all
Strange problem on xpsp2 home machine.
When i open ie it doesn't bother making the dun box appear.
Possibly the result of gad-networks.com malware.
Even pgraded to ie7 but when offline I just get the following
res://ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff.htm
Outlook and firefox are happy to dial the usd adsl modem automatically,
after which ie will work ok.
Have done all of the obvious- eg delete modem/ dialup
accounts/neverdial-when network not present-dial default/quickly
scanned registry.
Have spent hours googling and following the advice given to others but
to no avail.
Am confident that the pc is malware free.
Haven't come across this before so any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Support >> IE7 problem to open linksHi,
When I try to open Adobe Reader from a link, I get an error message: "You
have no admission to the unit ...." The program is installed and works and I
have administrator privileges. (The link opens if I have opened Adobe Reader
beforehand). The same happens when trying to open certain radio stations. I
had no such problems before installing IE7. Can anybody advice me how to get
back to normal again?
Thank you.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> SP2 'breaks' Windows ExplorerHello. I just did a fresh install of XP Pro, and then I
installed SP2 right after. Everything is fine, except
that my Windows Explorer utility is having problems. I
have two physical Hard Drives and the second HD has two
Partitions. In Windows Explorer, when I click on the
left hand pane, to see the last partition of the second
HD, Drive G:\, Windows Explorer takes a significant time
to show the contents of Drive G:\-about 2-3 minutes. And
if I click on Windows Explorer while it hangs, it crashes
and takes down Explorer.exe as well (thought, after a few
seconds I return to a normal desktop.) But if I wait it
out, eventually G: drive content showsup, but I have to
wait way TOO Long!
But this doesn't occur if I use 'My Computer' icon on the
desktop. I can click on G:\ drive w/o any problems. And
if I'm in Windows Explorer and I first click on My
Computer first, and then click on the G:\ drive icon on
the RIGHT side pane, no problems. Only when I click on
G:\ drive on the left do I get issues. BTW, I first
tried out SP2 after I upgraded from a XP install with
SP1a and I never had this problem. Only after the fresh
XP install?
Anyone have any ideas of what I can try to do to fix this?
Thanks a million

- Windows XP Setup >> Roxio not working on reinstallI needed to reinstall my software that came with my new PC due to constant
crashing issues. Everything has worked perfectly until I reinstalled my
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.3.4 SP8 Basic. When I attempt to burn a CD, I get a
"Cannot create Creator" error message. I have tried the repair but no luck.
Any other ideas? Thanks!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Compaq Presario 2500 Series - Screen ProblemI have what I can only describe a small 'shadow' which has appeared in the
bottom corner of my screen. I don't believe its a pixel problem. What I
want to do is reduce the size of the display area by about 3mm to try and
remove the 'shadow' - it is easily done on CRT monitor but I don't know how
to do it on a laptop screen - anyone any ideas? Reducing the screen
resolution does not decrease the display area.

- Windows XP Support >> Bluetooth Adapter needs Generic driversI did this before....
As i recall in win98 etc, if u didnt want to use the recommended driver for
lets say a printer, you could choose from ANYTHING you liked, heck you could
install it as a mouse. It wouldnt work but you could.
Now in winxp it wont let you do jack all, so when i want to install the
generica bluetooth radio drivers for my bluetooth dongle, i had to open the
sp2 inf file and alter the Pid's around so that it installed as a generic
radio automatically....
Then windows crashed burned and died, the repair function didnt work, so
reinstall, now i have to do it again and i dont remember where the inf file
for bluetooth radio's is...
Can any1 help or show me another way of simply installing different drivers
for the radio...
Cheers

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP install with external CD driveI am trying to install XP on a newly installed Maxtor hard
drive. Since the external CD drive requires a driver for
the cpu to recognize the drive, I cannot run setup from
the CD.
I downloaded the diskette version of XP. Then attempted
to run setup from the A: drive. It went through the
motions of loading the 6 disketts. It then asked for the
CD to be loaded. Of course this dosen't work because the
CD Drive is not active at this point.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
