- Windows XP Network >> Internet connection statusHi,
When I right click my Internet Connection icon and choose Status, the
status window either only flashes open for a sec, or will only stay open for
a few seconds. It didn't use to do this, so am worried about why it is doing
it now. I use a D-Link router, (DI-604), and have not been having any
trouble with the internet connection. I have an updated virus scanner,
(Norton''s 4004), and have scanned with the latest definition file. I have
also scanned using the latest Ad-Aware, and Spybot programs and definitions.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

trying to capture clips from my own D:/ drive?

- Windows XP Network >> Unable to see other computers OR connect in hotelI tried connecting to another laptop running XP using a crossover cable, and we couldn't see each other. We both ran the networking wizard, rebooted, reconnected cables, etc., but no luck. The other user could see himself, but not me. I could not even see myself in Network Places. No firewall was being used
I also tried connecting to a hotel network for some high speed internet, but no luck. This made me think that my network card was fried, but when I connect at home with my DSL modem, it works without problems
Any ideas

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> fixmbr and fixboot from recovery consoleI foolishly tried these utilities on a laptop hard drive, before attempting
to backup data, and they made the problem worse. The original problem was
that win xp pro would not boot, even in safe mode, and kept cycling to a blue
screen. After booting from the cd, and trying fixmbr and fixboot, a reboot
attempt reported 'ntldr not found'. I used a cable adapter to insert the
laptop drive into a desktop pc, and then I found that the boot partition,
which was originally ntfs, was now reported as a 22gb fat partition. I have
tried several recovery tools, which list a lot of files, but only recover the
smaller files successfully. (A second 11gb fat32 partition on the same disk
is totally accessible.) There is a large (490mb) pst file, which appears to
recover, but then contains no messages, and appears to have been crossed with
other files. There were a few bad sectors on the drive, which might have been
the origianal problem, and if I had connected it to the other computer first,
I mght have been able to backup my files, but I seem to have limited my
options now. I believe, if i knew how, I could manually edit some sectors, so
that windows knows it is an ntfs, and not fat partition, and read the files
properly, but is there a utility to help with this? Is there any way for me
to unfixmbr, and unfixboot? I want to try to copy sector 0 from another drive
with similar-sized partitions, but is there a utility to help with this? Has
anyone had experience with a similar problem?

- Windows XP >> Corrupt FileI keep getting a warning, "The file or directory C:\$Mft
is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."
Chkdsk runs when I startup. The message continues to
popup. If I bypass Chkdsk, my mouse won't work and I have
to reboot.
I had the Blaster Worm, downloaded the patch and tool kit
and that is now gone. I can work on the computer now,
however, this message I am getting really slows me down.

- Windows XP >> Need some help understanding USB Controllers on computerRunning on Windows XP Pro SP2
I'd like to make sure all my usb ports on my laptop are USB 2.0
In Device Manager Under Universal Serial Bus controllers I show the
following:
Intel(r) 8280 1DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
Intel(R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Enhanced Host Controller - 24C2
Intel(R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Enhanced Host Controller - 24C4
Intel(R) 8280 1DB/DBM USB Enhanced Host Controller - 24C7
USB Conposite Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
There are four usb ports on my laptop. Is the above showing that only one
of the ports is USB 2.0? I can plug in external drives to any of the ports
and they work at USB 2.0 speed. Or does this mean only one of the four
ports can be used at USB 2.0 port at any one time?
I don't understand what device manager is showing. I would appreciate very
much a brief explination of what Device Manager USB Controllers is
describing.
TIA

Windows XP MovieMaker >> What are the alternatives to MM2?
I am having problems with PCM sound files in MM2.
While I am trying to get to the bottom of this, is there any other program I
should consider using - preferably free! ;-)
I am a total greenhorn in this area.
Comments appreciated.

D,
>I am having problems with PCM sound files in MM2.
Until someone can help, have you gone over the information
on this site?
www.papajohn.org
I believe I read something there about some free programs
for conversion purposes, if that's what you need. Maybe it
will give you some ideas.
Good hunting.

Maybe posting your question to a more general newsgroup would be better than
this Movie Maker one... such as rec.video.desktop

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> vedio quality - captured from DV typeI just wonder is anyone aware of the quality captured?
I tried all kind of methods mentioned here, but it seems didn't work well
for me.
I heard maybe my problem is my DV camcorder is kind of old(I brought it from
1998, JVC DV-GR3), someone told me that the driver inside my camcoder might
not fast enough. But few days ago someone posted here said his SONY
camcorder had some problem. So I just wonder if all the DV caputer has some
problem?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Network >> Wireless between Win98 and XPHello,
I am having the following problem:
I setup an ad'hoc wireless connection between A Win98 and an XP.
The problem is that, after booting the XP machine, it can't ping the Win98, or access file on it.
The connection only works between these 2 PCs after doing a ping from the Win98 machine to the XP machine.
After doing that, everything works fine, but the very first connection has to be initiated fron Win98.
This does not occur at all between two Win98 machine.
This behavior is systematic.
I am using static IP, noy using DNS or DHCP, very simple setup.
I suspect some setup to do on XP.
Another point is that the cards on the Win98 are 802.11b/11Mb, and the XP card is 802.11b/22Mb, but this is supposed to be compatible, and it works well, after doing the ping.
Thanks for helping,

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Norton Antivirus Install TroubleI am having a really hard time getting NAV2004 to install on my computer...
I think there might still be an old version that is not fully removed, as
it seems to be skipping the step where it normally asks for the code from
the cd.
It fails every time around the halfway point of copying the files.
Is there some way to check for remnants of the previous install? Or maybe
another way to get it to work?
Any help is appreciated...
Thanks,
