- Windows XP Update >> Automatic update downloading right after startupHello
I am having a problem with Automatic update after upgrading windows update to v.5 and XP to XP SP2 RC2. It appears to be downloading and executing something at startup. After all of the startup items are loaded, a session of svchost is executed that takes almost 50% of CPU usage. Then update.exe starts, taking as much/more CPU usage. I have tried to find out what has been installed, but I haven't found anything yet. I have ran anti-virus on the system and haven't found anything. Any help would be appreciated

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Color saturation after saving the movieJust installed new XP. Have Radeon 128MB video card, Pentium 4 , etc.
I downloaded short clips from a Canon Ixus 300 directly through the
multimedia slot . The clips play fine before Movie Maker touches them. Once
they are saved with MM (either unedited or stitched together), the playback
is color saturated to the point of looking like a color negative.
I have not tried downloading from camcorder yet so don't know if it's a
source problem or not.
Can't find any way to fix this by fiddling the usual bits.

- Windows XP Update >> Internet Explorer automatically opens Windows Update siteWe have seen a few instances with XP where a user runs IE, and instead of
getting their normal homepage, the Windows Update site opens. We have
Automatic Updates turned off by Domain Group Policy, and the PC settings
indicate that they are indeed turned off. If the user clicks on their
homepage menu button, they go to their correct homepage. This odd IE
behavior may or may not return the next time they run it.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Monitor turning stand-byHi,
I was using my PC, this morning, and the monitor turned standy by for
some seconds and then turned on again on its own but no picture was
visible. To view something on my screen I had to reboot my machine.
This problem occured to me twice a couple of months ago, and using a
different monitor. Also when this occured in the previous months, it
only occured a couple of minutes after I switched the pc, then I would
reboot it and leave running for about 10hrs and no problem occurs.
What could the problem caused by, monitor, graphics card, motherboard,
or something else.
Can someone help me out
Thanks in Advance

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> 100% Performance IssueI am having the problem of my performance consistently
staying at 100%. I have even tried shutting different
programs down to see if that helps and nothing happens,
still stays at 100%. I have Windows XP Pro. Also, my
computer is new. It is a 2.6 GHz and has 1.5 gb Ram so I
know that the RAM can't be the issue. Please HELP!!

- Windows XP Network >> "net use K: \\192.168.0.40\D$" is working - "net use K: \\comp7\D$" is NOT working ????I have an inhouse LAN with three computers.
one of the computers has the name "comp7" with (fixed) IP 192.168.0.40.
When I map now the remote shared partition D with name D$ to my local drive K:
with either the command
net use K: \\192.168.0.40\D$
it works and with the command
net use K: \\comp7\D$
it doesn't work.
Why ?
Not putting it e.g. into the "hosts" file cannot be the reason because
other shared folders on other computer (which are not in the "hosts" file)
can be accessed WITH the hostname succesfully.
I could imagine that this is a firewall problem.
Which ports are used to perform hostname resolving in the LAN ?
Moreover curious is that I cannot perform a
net view \\192.168.0.40
It yields a
System error 5 has occurred.
Access is denied.
However access must be available because sharing is possible through
fixed IP.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> What output size to pickThere are several settings available in the Video settings window of WMM2,
namely frame rate, color space/compression and output size.
How do I know what to pick? I have a Sony HC96 camcorder pre-set for
recording in 16:9.
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> trouble deletingalright, now my problem sounds simple, but the only thing
simple about it is how flabbergasted i am. I have several
media files, one's a rar, others are assorted media
formats, mp3, etc. Now these files, for some reason, I
cant delete them. I have auto delete, so it doesnt send
anything to the rec bin, so i click delete on file.rar
and it claims it's being used by another program even
though it's not. i even rebooted, and i got the same
message. i even tried to slamm it in the rec bin to no
avail. how do i get rid of these files without
reformatting? please help ^^

- Windows XP Setup >> XP repairI have been trying to repair XP booting up from the Windows CD. First time
round, it appeared to work, except that the computer froze up after a few
minutes. I tried to repair again, and now find that it gets stuck. It
completes 'copying files to the Windows Installation', restarts, goes through
the first stage of Windows start-up. The screen goes blank, and then it
stops. I have left it overnight with no success. I now have effectively a
dead computer. Help!

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> the tweak ui "New" tab disappeared!Hi.
Strangely, the "New" tab is no longer available when I open the TweakUI...
I tried to uninstall the app using "Add/Remove programs", but it says that
it was already uninstalled - so I removed its entry from "Add/Remove
programs". After this I just deleted the .CPL entry from C:\WINDOWS\system32,
and made a search to remove all the files named "tweakui" from the computer.
I cleaned the registry with a specific program and re-booted.
Then I re-installed TweakUI, but the problem persists: the tab "New" is gone.
Am I missing something?
This trouble is annoying, because there are some filetypes that I can't
create anymore from right click -> new, and I can't edit this setting anymore.
Can someone please help?
Thanks is advance!

- Windows XP Setup >> Outlook Express "ask before opening" attachments goneI installed Windows XP Pro on my PC last week. I've been
using Outlook Express for E-mail and as a news reader.
I got annoyed by OE6 always asking me if I wanted to Open or
Save file attachments such as JPG pictures so I unchecked the
"Always ask before opening files of this type" box.
Now, I've changed my mind and want the option to Open or Save
back again but I cannot find a setting in OE6 Options that
will turn on the "Always ask before opening files of this
type" again.
Please advise how I can do this. Thank you.

- Windows XP >> Problems deleteing items from the recycle binHi,
Whenever i try to delete everything from my bin it tells
me one of the files is "in use by another program" (no
other programs are open). The only way i can delete the
contents of the bin is to delete the files in small
portions (which takes forever). Is there a fix for this
problem or do i have to reduce the capacity of the bin?
cheers,
Glen

Sounds like some type of spyware or adware program. Here are two free
utilities that will scan your computer and remove junk like that:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
http://security.kolla.de/
If you do not have an antivirus program it would be a very good idea to get
one and scan your system. Avast! and AVG are both good for this and free as
well.

- Windows XP Network >> Connects to Internet... But Cannot Ping, Browse, etc.I'm able to establish a connection to my ISP using a dial-
up w/ internal modem. However, I can't seem to take any
outgoing actions (ping, browse web, etc). For example,
ping 'cannot establish connection' and IE 6 gives me a DNS
error. Considering all was fine before upgrading (and
suggested patches), I'm not entirely sure where to start
looking. Any suggestions?
thanks.

Now, how can i access the internet with my Norton Pers. firewall active? I

If you can help, please do so...

- Windows XP >> Is there a utility for backing up all data including Favorites, Address book, & email in preparation for new C harddisk.I received a message at boot time that the Dell Disk Monitor noticed that
"my hard disk is operating outside the normal specifications, and it is
advisable to immediately back up all data and replace my hard drive."
Is there a utility for backing up all data including favorites, address
book, and email folders. I believe I read about one in a Microsoft
Newsletter sometime in the past year. Actually, I believe I have backed up
just about all data except the Explorer Favorites and Outlook email folders
and I don't know how to find them. If there is a utility available, maybe
it might back up these and some other folders I have forgotten.
Also, is there a way to backup XP and all programs for restore on a new hard
drive? I don't believe the XP Backup facility will do that.

In the event viewer there are no events in the Security Log folder. There

It looks like it's configured like the rest of the Events.
Am I missing something obvious here?

- Windows XP Setup >> Opening FoldersOn my laptop when I try to open folders instead of them opening up I get a
search box. For example, when I double click "My Computer" it shows me what
is on my computer, but when I double click "Local Disk (C:)" I get the
typical search window instead of a list of what's on my hard drive. When I
right click Local Disk (C:) I get a list of options. I noticed the first
option is "Search" instead of "Open". So I have to right click every time
and scroll down to open. The crazy thing is it didn't always do this. But I
don't know what I could have done to cause this and I can't figure out how to
fix it. I have a Toshiba Laptop with some proprietary controls and programs
running XP Home Edition.

my desktop picture, but the rest of it stays the same, when I click
desktop >properties>appearance> ....there is no windows xp style. Now
there's no classical2!Windows and buttons are grayed
p.s.One question-should this box be checked, when I run
services.msc ,under Themes>properties>log on>allow service to interact
with desktop?does this has to do with it?
Please, is there solution, I really want my xp style back.

- Windows XP Network >> Keep losing network gateway settingI am running a "windows xp" PC with 2 network cards. 1 connecting to a
192.168 network and 1 connecting to a 10.232 network. Both have
gateways which supply external intranets and internet, one of them thru
a proxi server.
All is well, except one of the gateways keeps clearing itself. If I do
an IPCONFIG, it has gone, but it's still there in the settings. If I do
a repair, it all fires up again and reappears in the IPCONFIG.
Any kind soul who can help please?
Thanks!
