- Windows XP Hardware >> XP hanging during startupStartup is normal (other than a blinking cursor on a blank screen for 30
seconds, which I've had for three weeks, another issue already dealt with)
right up to the point at which my wallpaper appears. At that point, it
stops. I ran Norton disk defrag and windoctor just prior to last shutdown.
windoctor found 10 problems, 1 ActiveX and 9 shortcuts. Norton repaired the
problems and I shut the computer down and rebooted. That's my story and I'm
STUCK to it! WindowsXP with SP2 on a Dell desktop.
TIA and Thank God for laptops!

- Windows XP Security >> runas - access deniedHello Newsgroup!
I also have lots of problems getting RUNAS to work on a WindowsXP
Pro/SP2 machine.
runas /user:Administrator cmd.exe
does not work on a restricted user account (Access denied).
But when I switch to Administrator, the same command just works fine.
Now, can anyone please explain me this behaviour?
Thanks a lot and have a nice day

- Windows XP >> Can't delete font (ttf file) w/o rebooting Windows XP.Hello, I need to periodically update a *.ttf file from the windows\fonts
folder. When I try to delete that font, it says "access denied". I do
have admin priviledges so the problem I believe is that something is using
that file. According to the vendor of the application that uses the font,
i need to kill a certain process that uses the ttf file, but that didn't
help. I always have to reboot the computer in order to free up the ttf
file. I have to update a multitude of PCs at our site and I'm searching
for an automated way--perfereable one that doesn't require a reboot.

- Windows XP Support >> DVD sloooow read performanceI can write 2.5 GB to am 8X DVD-R in 10 min. (using Roxio 7), but if
I try to copy that DVD-R to my HD, it takes 2-3 hrs! I imagine the slow
read performance could be greatly improved by increasing the no. of read
buffers (to minimize lost revolutions), but I can't find anywhere in Win
XP Home to do that (I haven't resorted to Regedit yet), and I can't find
anything in Windows Help (including Internet articles) on the subject
relevant to XP. Can some kind soul point me to relevant info about this?
I've seen this problem on 3 different relatively new systems (all
that I've tried); my current configuration is:
- 3.2 GHz Intel P4 CPU with HT
- Win XP Home (all applicable updates applied)
- 1024 MB dual-channel DDR3200 RAM (2 DIMMs)
- 10,000 RPM 36 GB boot drive
- 7200 RPM 120 GB D: drive
- 16X DVD-ROM drive
- 8X dual-format DVD burner

- Windows XP >> virtual memory settings, where are they? sound problemin Halflife games/steamI know in ME/98 there was a way to change the amount of virtual memory. It
looks like in XP the paging file is the equivalent of this. Is that right?
If not, where can I change it to make my virutal memory bigger. I have
increaseased paging file size by 1,000mb greater than the default settings.
I have all the latest drivers, but I am having an audio/lag problem in the
games I play online. Whenever an audio (automated voice) comes up to tell me
to do something in the games, I get a 1 second stoppage. It is almost like
the computer skips in the data transfer. The games are all HalfLife mods
used through the network program called Steam.
I was told that this is probably a cache problem and that I should increase
the virutal memory.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Explorer.exe 100%I have a problem when I select certain files (I dont have
to try to run them just highlight) and also when I leave
a folder open for a long time on a drive.
What happens is that Explorer.exe goes to 100% CPU usage
(according to Task Manager) and everything gets slow.
The only thing I can do is shut it down and reboot.
I have tried to uninstall the 811493 hotfix. Nothing
Virus Scan, Defragged, Disk Doctored, etc..
What can I look for / do? One of the files (video
Sliders 3x16 Exodus Part 1 - 228meg) I cannot even
delete it - says that some file is already using it.
Even after a clean boot. And then the Explorer.exe will
be at 100%
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP Hardware >> My Computer Key Not WorkingI just purchased a Microsoft Wired 500 PS/2 keyboard. Everything seems to be
working great except the "My Computer Key" doesn't seem to work. Every other
multifunction key works fine, including Mail, Internet Explorer Home,
Favorites, Volume Control, Mute, Windows Media Player and Calculator. I'm
using Windows XP x64 Professional with the standard windows drivers.
Does this sound like a faulty keyboard or is there some explanation as to
why this key isn't working. Thanks.

- Windows XP Hardware >> [Questions] USB Vendor ID and Product ID and PnP Device IDHi,
This is all about USB Vendor ID and Product ID. I am working USB mass
storage devices.
I have used msinfo32 to get the USB vendor ID and Product ID and some
strange numbers follow after the product ID.
Questions
[1] How does this Vendor ID and Product ID work ?
[2] What makes the USB mass storage device hardware unique from each ?
[3] Is it possible to have same PnP Device ID for two USB mass storage
Devices ?
All relevant answers will be appreciated.

Windows XP Network >> Issue with Remote Desktop Connection
First time I've posted to this group. Let me know if there is another
group that would be better to post this in.
I have been using Remote Desktop to connect to various different
computers running XP Pro from another XP Pro machine.
I've been having problems with two of them, which seem to have the same
symptoms.
* After I restart them I can log in using Remote Desktop just fine.
Later I can not and have to restart the remote system.
* I have tied to make sure I "log off" the remote machine instead of
just closing the remote desktop window.
* When it fails, it usually connects and asks for credentials. After
submitting my user name and password it just sits there for a while then
the window closes.
* One of the machines is also connected to it's own
monitor/keyboard/mouse. When I'm having connection problems I can not
get it to display anything on the monitor. There is a printer connected
to it, and that and other services continue to work, so I know the
system is still running.
* I have tried disabling sleep mode on both machines, but no luck.
* I have not seen any messages in the Event logs that appear to be
connected to this.
* One machine is on a domain with a SBS 2003 server. I can login to the
server and manage the remote machine. I can not remotely restart the
machine from the server unless I tell it to force hung applications to quit.
From all this I wonder if the some service used by remote desktop is
not closing properly when I log off the remote machine and is not
letting me login again since it is still running.
Any thoughts or ideas would be great!

- Windows XP Support >> Folder not displayed in Windows ExplorerI have a new notebook with Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2.
I have a folder called "HP Notebook" under the C drive that I created
last week and used to contain certain files from my old notebook
restored from an external HD using Windows Backup utility. Everything
worked fine last week.
I decided to delete everything under this folder and restore every
users documents and settings from the external HD (no system stuff).
The backup utility seemed to work OK and said it completed 14,000+
files.
When I looked for C:\HP Notebook using Windows Explorer, it was not
visible. However, if I search for a file that I know exists, the
results show "C:\HP Notebook\...directory path
further...\searchedfilename".
In Control Panel, I think I have everything set to display all folders
regardless of what they are (Hidden, System, etc.).
I'd like to delete this "hidden" folder. Can someone help?
Thanks,
Mike

- Windows XP Support >> Replacing that awful MS Sans Serif font!I just got a shiny new LCD monitor, turned on ClearType, and am living in a
world of crisp font goodness like I never thought possible.
All of this comes to a crashing halt when I look at some of the utilities I
use every day, like the K9 spam filter. These programs use the bitmapped "MS
Sans Serif" font, which looks HORRIBLE on my new screen. The small,
pixelated characters almost appear to have a white aura around them -- an
optical illusion which makes text very hard to read.
I did find references to the FontSubstitutes registry key, but "MS Shell
Dlg" is already pointing to the antialiased "Microsoft Sans Serif".
Is there something, anything, I can do to force Windows to use "Microsoft
Sans Serif" (which I assume has the same character set and widths as its
ugly cousin) instead of "MS Sans Serif"? Thanks!

- Windows XP >> svchostI have a machine running Windows XP. Quite frequently the
machine shuts down when connected to the internet. I know
this sounds like the recent Blaster virus but I have
patched the machine, scanned for viruses and nothing has
been found, all up to date.
I have an svchost file which is running at around
270,000kb which I think is particularly high. I tend to
get an error warning about Virtual Memory but I have tried
all configs for this without success. I have 512mb RAM and
a 60GB HDD. If I remove my USB Scanner and Web Cam, the
svchost file reduces in size to 3500kb. Surely this is
wrong. It stops the virtual memory message from popping up
too.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and did you find a
solution? I don't want to have to re-install everything
on my machine if I don't need to.
