the case for all the video files I had before. Do I need to download a new
codec? Has anyone had this problem, and what did you do to fix it?

- Windows XP Setup >> XP2 Home SP2: Blocks downloads of .EXEs too well?Hi - I upgraded one of my machines to XP Home SP2 - now, I have
trouble downloading (specifically) .EXE files - the downloads hang part
way - happens in mozilla and IE6, and even in a FTP client program. On
another (WIN98SE) machine, no problem. This happened to me under
Mcafee, Etrust, and Norton (I'm trying out AV programs), but happened as
well with each one "disabled". (haven't tried it with no AV
installed). The windows firewall is OFF. I have no other
network-related problems. I'm not asking for an answer as much as help
- where to debug, where to look for that hidden option that's clogging
the works.
Thanks!

- Windows XP Update >> URGENT UPDATE HELPHi
I am running Windows 2000 Server SP4
Last night, I ran the latest update on the windows update from my taskbar
icon.
I was then asked to reboot after running the update. Unfortunately, since
then, the machine seems to hang at the point before the "ctrl+alt+del" prompt
is presented with the message "restoring network connections". However, I am
able to login this morning using Safe Mode boot up.
How can I get back to normal i.e. prior to running the update? I think I
will be extremely cautious about future updates from Microsoft.

Windows XP Security >> admin problems
I am having the same problem. None of my administrator accounts (2) will work.
I can use the limited accounts, but I cannot download any Anti-virus or HP updates. Nor can I access some files on my computer that require an administrator.
My problem started about a week ago too. I'm wondering if it's a virus. I have Norton 2004 installed, and it did not detect any viruses, but I have been unable to download any updates.
I hope someone can provide an answer for us.

- Windows XP >> Folder view won't alphabetize file namesI have folder that contains about 35-40 files. No matter what I change in
the folder view options (by name, type, size, refreshing, etc) it refuses to
alphabetize the file names.
File names all begin with the same 1st word, followed by a different 2rd
word which will not alphabetize
The strange part is that it has sorted the file names in 2 groups, both of
which do alphabetize, but not the entire list. I do not have the view set up
for groups.
Anybody else ever experienced this phenomena?

- customize >> Help Help, Desktop Folder problemOk guys here is the deal, I generally like to keep as
much off of my C:\ drive as possible and leave it just for
the OS. My "My Documents" folder and "Desktop" Folder
were moved to my F:\ drive. Now this was for my Admin user
of Tony. Alright ...this was all working fine until..
For some reason I decide to move the "Desktop" folder
of "Administrator" and "All Users" to my F:\ drive as
well. Windows threw the standard "This folder already
exists" message but I clicked to go ahead and do it anyway.
Now every file in my "Desktop" folder has icons appearing
twice on my actual desktop. I delete 1 and they both go
away so it's like windows is showing me one icon for my
logged on user and once again for "All Users".
I only have one consolidated Desktop folder on F:\
Anybody know of way to correct this? Is there a way to
recreate a Desktop folder per user? any help would be
appreciated.

- Windows XP Security >> Can't clear search historyI am not very technically literate with regard to
computers, so please bear with me. When I double-click on
the search box of any search engine, I get an alphabetical
listing of all of the previously searched-for items. I
have attempted to perform a "Clear Forms," but it never
seems to work. I have also tried restarting after
performing the clear forms, but that also doesn't work. I
have also attempted to delete cookies, history,
and "temporary internet files" under "Internet Options."
None of this has worked. Every time I go back to a search
engine and begin typing in the search box, a list of
previously searched words/phrases keeps coming up. How do
I erase that search history?

- Windows XP >> User and profile problemsHi,
Firstly, I appreciate that this could be a Novell problem, but equally is
could be an XP one so I need some ideas from an XP point of view to help
solve this problem..
We use Novell Client to enable our users to login.. part of this uses
something called Dynamic Local User Policy (DLU) which enables us to
dynamically create accounts on the local machine as required..
In our case, we use 2 setup accounts which create a 'Localuser' username and
'Localuser' profile folder in Docs and Settings. This user is created
initiallty with administrator rights which can be controlled from the DLU. We
logon once with the first setup account, do bits and pieces, reboot and log
on with the second account and finish off. Once complete, the users are then
free to use the machines.
When a user logs on, the DLU changes the user access level to User from
Administrator. Now, up until now this has worked ok - the User logs on
dynamically to the local machine and attaches to 'Localuser' profile in XP.
Recently I've rebuilt our image and since then this has not worked. Instead
it creates a second profile folder called Localuser.Machinename (machinename
varies), ignoring the 'Localuser' profile which was initially setup but still
uses the 'Localuser' username.
File rights are a condiseration, but within the DLU you can assign file
rights per user which enables me to control how much access the user can
have. Using this, I've given fill rights to the c:\documents and
settings\localuser folder.
In general, what causes Windows to ignore an already created profile folder
connected to a username; Instead creating a second replacement one. Are there
any Group Policy (GPO) considerations?
Another thing I've noticed is before the rebuild you would login with the
first setup account, it would create the profile, account and perform the
initial first log in setup. You would then login with the second setup
account and it would go straight in without doing the setup. After the
rebuild, the first log in setup appears after each login - though the profile
problem, where a new folder is created, doesn't occur here but only when the
student logs in and the rights are changed by the DLU.
Now again, I appreciate that this could be a Novell problem, but equally it
could be an XP setting that I need to change.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> XP Pro Profile Corruption?I have a dell inspiron 8200, 512k ram, P4 2G. I have 2
user profiles on it. My main profile has recently become
very slow when trying to connect to the internet for
anything - such as using IE or retrieving email. It
takes sometimes 20 to 40 seconds for my initial
connection to the web when using IE, and ~20 sec to load
each page thereafter. If I go to my second profile -
which is a guest profile, it operates normally - 1-3
seconds to load a page, often faster.
Can a profile corrupt?
Is there a way to restore it?
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> file sharing and printing problemsI am using a Laptop (win XP HOME; SP2) and a PC (WIN XP HOME SP2) along with
a wireless router and PCI card for my laptop to connect to the internet.
The main problem is I cant access computers through the network. I have
disabled the firewall and enabled all the exceptions. however, that has still
not worked.
When trying to access the network, I am able to see all the computers on the
network, but it does not let me access them. I get the following message
"The PC is not accesible. You do not have permission. Access Denied"
Before SP2, I did'nt have any problems related to filesharing or network
printing.
Please help me in what I should do in such a situation. I have tried every
thing and am thinking removing SP2.

- Windows XP Setup >> Win XP licensing questionI recently found out about the "one operating system, one
computer" policy, the fact that Msoft limits the
activation of Windows XP--purchased legally--to
installation on one & only one machine. Here's my
question: What if the machine that I install XP on today
burns out a week from now? The going price at the IT
store in my neighborhood for Win XP Pro is $300.00+tx. I
find it very difficult to believe that a company as
affluent as Microsoft would not have a policy in place
to "cut some slack" to customers who've paid the serious
bucks for their op system software and then suffer the
misfortune of having something else (e.g., mobo, cpu,
etc) going out. I'm very much looking forward to an
answer on this one.
Thanks for your time & attention to detail [:-)
Terry.
