- Windows XP >> Cannot install driversOn your system, do you have any other Firewire peripheral cards?
Such as a Siig Video capture card or is your system configured just
with the RT2000 (AGP) and the PCI Firewire unit ? And are simply

- Windows XP Support >> Cannot Turn Off Automatic UpdatesSomehow XPs automatic updates was turned on & I believe I am downloading
SP2 for the last few days. I do not leave my computer on when not in
use since I am not at home. Since I am on dial-up it will take forever &
I cannot download any virus updates. I searched & found a Microsoft
article (306525) which explains how to turn off "automatic updates"
by runnings ysdm.cpl. I did that but it still says automatic updates is
"ON". How can I stop the download & turn off the automatic
updates. Also I double click on the icon & right click on the icon
in the System Tray but nothing happens. It just says Downloading
Updates 43% Thanks in advance...marvo

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> XP Super Slow after installing Anti Virus ProgramRecently, I installed Kaspersky Anti Virus Program on my computer. Nothing in
there documentation said anything about uninstalling my old Anti virus which
was McAfee. I looked thinking that would impede the new install of another
Anti Virus program. Now my computer is useless. It takes at least a 1/2 hour
to load everything up and I cannot get on the internet or do anything on my
computer. I spent three hours the other night trying to reload a previous
version before I installed the program and could not even get to that. Is
there someway that I can enter using safe mode or F2,3,4,or whatever to get
in and uninstall, load a previous version or something so that I can get my
laptop back to normal? Help Mr/Ms. Wizards!

- Windows XP Support >> system file checkerI am running (crawling) Windows XP w/all recent
updates on a ThinkPad R40.
Normally, when you click on something,
you expect a response in less than a few seconds.
My problem is that clicking on something might
not produce a response for almost a full minute.
And while waiting, I can hear the hard drive
thrashing.
I have scanned for virus and spyware.
Now I want to run system file checker (sfc).
I understand that sfc will require that
I insert my Windows XP cdrom. But my
cdrom is a little over a year old. It has SP2
but in the last year, I must have updated at
least 50 files.
My question...
What is going to happen if sfc compares
an older cdrom version of a file with a recent
updated version of a system file?
Thank you,
Charles

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> SP2 & Adobe Premiere Pro ErrorsAfter installing SP2, encoding sequences to MPEG2 (Export, Adobe Media
Encoder by Transcode) results in the error message "Premiere Pro failed to
return Frame, process halted." part way through the process. Tried several
things to fix the problem but the problem persisted until I restored my
ghosted image of XP SP1. Problem went away.
Went to Adobe's Premiere Forum and found that others are having the same
problem. (Memory Leak.) Is it SP2 or Adobe?

- Windows XP >> Explorer.exeI just recently bought a new hardrive and installed XP Pro. Because i was
having a problem where the process "explorer.exe" was using up a lot of my
cpu (70-99%). But by doing this I didn't solve anything so I figured there
must be a patch or something i can do to XP to make this problem disappear.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> Browser crashesI have a persistent problem that I'm unable to solve. After browsing the
internet for several minutes (the amount of time varies), my browser crashes.
I don't get an error message, I just a a message that says "alert -
www.google.com (or whatever site I try to go to) could not be found. Please
check the name and try again." The browser won't connect to any new page and
it won't return me to my home page. This happens with Internet Explorer,
Firefox and Opera so I figure it is a Windows problem and not a browser
problem. To get the browser working again, I have to close it and then
re-open it several times or, in some cases, I have to close my internet
connection and dial-up again. I am running Windows XP Home Edition. I'm
also running the free versions of Zone Alarm and AVG anti-virus. I also run
Ad-Aware and Spybot every week. Can anyone help with this? Thanks.

- Windows XP Network >> can't change network settings even though I am local admin userHi there,
I am resorting to you guys to find some help because so far, I am failing
with all other sources of help I am trying...
I have a user here who has an HP nc6200 laptop with XP Pro on it. He has
local admin permission to it, I have local admin permission to it, and of
course the local admin account has admin permissions to it. None of these
accounts have the rights to modify the network settings. For some reason
since a month or so, we keep getting this message: â??You do not have
sufficient privileges for accessing connection properties. Contact you
administrator.â?? when we try to change the network settings on that machine.
I think it is a local policy problem, or a registry problem. I've scanned
this machine with all utilities I can think of, and it comes back clean.
So far I've tried removing the user accounts, recreating the user accounts,
remove/reinstalled SAV, scanned with HiJackThis and other utilities and also
checked this setting in GPEDIT.MSC
User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Network, Network Connections.
In the right pane locate the entry for
Enable Windows 2000 Network Connections settings for Administrators.
Double click this entry and set it to Not Configured. If its already set at
Not Configured, set it to Disabled, apply the change. Then change it back to
Not Configured
All with no luck.
Would one of you know which key or local policy permission may have changed
to cause that?
In advance, thanks a lot for your help... you will save me a format!

- Windows XP Support >> microsoft update for service pack 2I just found out that the microsoft updat----service pack2 was what was
causing my problems with installing new software. I also found out from
computer repairman that this update is causing all kinds of problems for
people with printers and other programs on their computers..so I uninstalled
the lousy program, I never had any problems with my computer until this
update. So if you installed this update and are now having problems with
your computers, this might be the cause.

- Windows XP Update >> removing second OS filesI was having problems with my win2k machine, so I upgraded to winXP.
Instead of running the xp upgrade while win2k was running, I shut down
win2k and booted from the upgrade disk. This installed xp in the
Windows directory, but did not upgrade my 2k installation. So, when
that was done, I had a dual boot setup -- 2k and xp. But I don't want
2k, so I booted in 2k and ran xp setup again which updated my 2k to xp.
It installed in the WinNT directory. This is what I wanted and I'm
very glad I didn't totally mess up my machine. But now I have this
extra copy of XP in my Windows Directory. Is it safe to delete all of
the files in the Windows directory and subdirectory? or were some of
them there before the XP installation?

- Windows XP >> XP drive get full after several days withour rebooting.Hello everyone,
just realised that my XP is consuming a LOT of disk space over time, which
appear to be re-available once I restart my machine. I use XP Home edition.
Here are the symtoms: Checking regularly the properties of my C: drive I
can see that the space decrease constantly. When I reboot my machine, the
disk space is back to the level it was when I started it previously.
I use the computer over several days without shuting it down, simply
folding back the screen of my laptop, which, I think, put the computer in
standby or something. After several days, the c: drive was FULL, althought
there was over 30 gig available at start.
Monitoring the system, I can see that the "system" process is constantly
performing "I/O write bytes". As i am writing this, over 2 gig has been
writen by this process over two hours. I don't know if the symptoms and this
fact are related or not.
If nothing occurs on the system, would it be normal for the "system"
process to constantly write? What could cause the Disk to get full and space
releases once we restart XP?
I have the latest XP version with all system updates applied. Any idea
what is going on in my XP, any suggestions to help me investigate this and
resolve the problem^
Thanks,
- Pierre
