- Windows XP Support >> uninstalling softwareHi,
Purchased a slightly used laptop w Office xp already added; however, Word
has a slight glitch. In trying to uninstall the old version registered to
previous owner and install my own, I run into an inability to uninstall. The
Add/Remove program doesn't seem to see the older version, only mine. Tried
the registry removal microsoft -ware; didnt help. Tried installing my version
into the old Office 10 folder; it installed and a new folder was created
within the original office 10 folder containing the old version. When I open
Word from either folder (presumably mine or that of the previous owner), the
version of Word that opens is registered to the previous owner.
I would appreciate any advice y'all might have.

I've closed all toolbars but can't seem to close that one without any

Windows XP >> Taskbar has duplicate toolbars and empty toolbars
I have a very similar problem with my taskbar. When I right click the
taskbar and scroll up to toolbars, the window that opens shows three
"address" listings. In the past I was getting two "language bar" listings.
On occasion, I get "ghost" toolbars that show up in my taskbar. I have
downloaded both of the programs that you suggested and ran them. The "ghost"
toolbars were removed, but the multiple "address" toolbars are still offered
in the toolbar menu. Is there any way to eliminate them?
PS I have tried disabling all the toolbars using Taskbar tools repairs plus,
rebooting my computer, and then enabling them, and the multiple listing still
come back.
Thank for any help in advance.

This Google Groups thread seems to answer the "where?". You'd have to
edit the Binary Data to remove the two extra listings. If you try it,
be sure to make a restore point, and/or export the current data beforehand.

Joe,
Thanks for the thread. I checked it out and couldn't find
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop.
I don't have the sub folder "Desktop" in my registry. All the sub folders
under HKEY...\Streams are numbered folders. When I did a search for the
value "TaskbarWinXP", nothing was found. Do you have any other suggestions
as to where I might look? I have a feeling that it has to do with the
"shell", but I'm not quite that knowledgeable about how to modify it. I am,
however, pretty comfortable with searching and editing the registry. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Yes, I have 0-38, then Defaults, and Desktop. I'm not that familiar
with the registry and can't suggest where else to look. But if you
search for "Taskbar", you might find it.. eventually. I suspect there
would be many hits on that search.

(Back from golfing, thought I'd elaborate on my previous post.) Look
for "Taskbar" with "NT", "WinNT" or something similar on the end. My
thought is, that if the computer was upgraded from W2k or NT, it might
have a different name for the Taskbar area and its toolbars.

Windows XP >> Taskbar has duplicate toolbars and empty toolbars
Thanks for the advice. Oddly enough, after double checking my registry, I
found the key HKEY_CURRENT........\Streams\Desktop. When I did a search for
"TaskbarWinXP" nothing was found, but it was in fact in the above key. The
data is saved in a huge binary string and, without knowing which values to
change, I don't think that there is much I can do about my problem. My
system was never upgraded from NT to XP. It was originally loaded with WP
Home Ed and only had the SP2 upgrade (along with all of MS's multiple
downloads). I did a search for the binary values and found a few web sites
that give a listing, but I don't know if I'm that confident about what
someone else posts. My best best may be to check another computer that I
know works and compare it's binary values to mine. Otherwise, I may just
have to reinstall Windows XP if it really becomes a problem. I've had this
same computer since 2002 and have never reinstalled Window yet, so I consider
myself lucky. Thanks again for your help and if i decide to venture into the
binary string to make a change, I'll post what the results were (if the
computer still works after that hahaha).

Windows XP >> Taskbar has duplicate toolbars and empty toolbars
This is an issue not covered well in any Windows Support info. Sometimes
reboots and installations just seem to cause extra toolbars in XP.
To delete a toolbar it is not necessary to play with the registry. Just do
as follows:
1) Right click in any uncluttered area of the taskbar and uncheck Lock the
Taskbar.
2) You'll then see each each of your toolbars separated by a very small
vertical column of dots. Move to each extra toolbar you no longer want,
right click within it and choose Close Toolbar at the top of the menu.
You can create new toolbars to hold the contents of any folder you want. To
create a new toolbar, right click in an uncluttered area of the taskbar and
select Toolbars>New Toolbar.

This seems to be the best answer in this topic. Additionally, the
"Remove Past Items" command in the "Notification Area" section of
taskbar plus! (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/taskbarplus!.htm) gets
rid of ghost toolbars.

- Windows XP >> Network Monitoring Program more simple than "MS Network Monitor v3"?Hi, i have been appointed the "sysadmin" of my small organization's
network (since i supposedly know more than anyone else here,
debatable) and my first task is to find the bandwidth hogs and IM
slackers.
We have a linksys router and everyone insists on using windows so it
is more or less a windows network. We do not have a server (yet, i am
lobbying the director but its an uphill battle) so i don't have a
computer where all the traffic goes through. I found MS Network
Monitor v3.x (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933741) and it *seems*
to do what i need like view network traffic w/o being installed on a
server only problem is that it is waaaay over my head and i have
little concept of how to filter/interpret the data.
I am trying to find a free app (lobbying my boss for a server is hard
enough as is w/o investing in even more software) that will simply
allow me to identify the sites users are visiting, how much they are
down/uploading, what they are down/uploading, and the services they
are using and how often they are using them (mainly instant
messaging), etc etc etc. And of course the information needs to be
understandable by someone like me (ie "advanced user" but not hacker/
sysadmin/guru).
Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated!
