Let me jump onto the bandwagon by telling my experience with winupdate
version 5 - I foolishly installed onto my system. V5 showed me a number of
hotfixes totalling around 2.9 MB but after starting the download it appeared
that BETA Service Pak 2 had been marked for download as well without my
consent (knowledge). Since those winupdates, once in progress, can NOT be
cancelled (downloading) and no one of the MVP eggsperts had an idea how
to stop this disaster, It was my joy to wipe my HD to come clean of the
situation. I dearly hope MS takes my unpleasant lesson to built an download
ABORT button into winupdate.

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Re: KB839645 I had the rebooting problem and I have had Outlook and Outlook Express fail
to get e-mail even though IE6 worked OK. Regarding the rebooting, it was
weird that you could not even get it to stop rebooting using "Safe-Mode".
Indeed, you had to use a "restore to last known good configuration" to
stop the rebooting. The KB839645 and KB841873 updates were to blame.
The original version of KB839645 had the problems, and I think that
Microsoft has fixed it now. Anyway, the problems came from two things:
1) If it tried to automatically install the update unattended, Norton
antivirus may have blocked its install partially because of
script-blocking. 2) The original KB839645 looked for the file
"control.man" which is NOT where it thinks it is located, and may not even
be on your hard-drive. Either way, Uninstalling both of these updates and
re-installing them has cured all MY problems caused by them. (I am not
positive that the KB841873 update was to blame, but I Uninstalled it along
with KB839645, and re-installed both of them using the specific downloads
for each that are posted on Microsoft's site.
