- Windows XP >> Services and StartupRunning XP Home. In MSCONFIG there are tabs for SERVICES and STARTUP. Is
there any comprehensive info on what these various items do (in plain
language) and which are safe to delete from either.
For example, I found BCMSMMSG in STARTUP and found it controls my modem,
which I never use as I have broadband. I unchecked it with no ill effects.
Your help is appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Windows Explorer problemI saw an article about how to enable opening a DOS-window from within Windows
Explorer using the current folder in Windows Explorer. However, I did one
mistake and now I don't know how to make it undone.
I went in to Tools->Folder Options...->File types tab in Windows Explorer
and then i highlighted File Folder and pushed the Advanced button. Then I
pushed the New... button and then added "Open folder in MS-DOS" and
"c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /k %1". Then I pressed OKk and did the mistake
to press the Standard button followed by OK. Now Windows Explorer opens a new
Search dialog (windows standard search dialog for files and folders) when
double clicking a folder in the right view of Windows Explorer. Also, when I
in the Search view right click an item, which has been found after a search,
and select Open Object's Folder I get another Search dialog. The worst thing
is that when I go back to Tools->Folder Options...->File types tab in Windows
Explorer and then i highlight File Folder and push the Advanced button the
Edit and Remove options are disabled so I cannot delete or edit what I have
just added. How can I solve this problem?

registry in XP through a comand prop like 98 or do you
need to reinstall. How can i recover my serial number

- Windows XP Setup >> Sysprep difficultiesGood afternoon,
I am currently having difficulties usng Sysprep. Each
time I create an image using sysprep -reseal -mini, I am
required to enter the product key, which should not be a
problem. However, two issues arise from this: first, I
have already included the key in the sysprep.inf file.
Secondly, the product key is not accepted, although I
know perfectly well that the key I am entering is valid.
Has anyone encountered problems similar to this before?
Thank you for your time.

- Windows XP Hardware >> CDRW Burner & DVDRW Burner File ProblemI have a problem. I use to be able to drag and drop on to either burner now when it formats the disks it went to a UDF file system and makes my disks size way down. It wont even let me drag anything to the disk drives now. I have nero 6 software as well as roxio 6 and it doesn't make a difference. I want it to burn in the old format but I am dumb to this so bear with me. I am using XP.

- Windows XP >> Do i still have a virus?I have scanned my computer with both online virus scans
as well as the norton antivirus i have installed on my
computer. However my computer still kept shuting down
after startup. I went to microsft and used the windows
update feature and that seemed to solve the problem about
windows shutting down.
To do this though I ended the process of WkCalRem.exe
which seemed to stop my computer from shutting down which
allowed me to download the updates. My question: Do I
still have a virus on my computer even though I don't see
the effects any more. Here is a log from XP Starup

- Windows XP Hardware >> problem to boot the harddisk from CD ROM/floopy diskMy computer cannot be booted from hard disk directly, and I doubt my
hard disk has some data corrupted?? However, I am able to see the
Windows XP splash screen but it never can go to Windows; it then
restarts by itself in an infinite loop. I think this problem was caused
after I failed to install the linux in different partition. I tried to
boot the machine from safe mode, but it still didn't help.
I tried to boot the machine from bootable Windows XP CD, and hopefully
I can repair or format the hard disk, but it didn't help at all. It
went to the setup page and stuck there forever. However, when I
switched to a good hard disk, it works fine. That means the machine is
able to boot from CD ROM if the hard disk is good, but not this hard
disk that has problem. I tried similar approach by using floopy disk to
boot the machine, and it works fine for a good hard disk but not this
bad one.
Any more suggestions?? I really have no idea what should I do now.
Please advice. thanks...

- Windows XP >> file deletion through windows installerHi
I am having a doubt regarding windows installer. Whenever windows
installer is used for uninstallation of any software, then the file
deleted through MSIexec.exe doesn't use NtDeletefile for deleting
files.i have verfied using windows debugger. My overall purpose is to
get notified whenever any software is getting installed/un installed.
How can i proceed to achieve the same.

Windows XP Security >> System utility problems after SP1 patch installed
The SP1 service installation procedure seems to have
caused both the backup and checkdisk Windows systems
utilities to totally lock up the computer after
installation, to the extent I can't even power off. I
installed the updates in October, 2002 and had this
problem, then used the "System Restore" feature to get
back to where I was. I waited 6 months to try again, but
the same problem occurs now. Everything seems to be
working well. Suggestions? I am up to date on critical
updates based on the Windows XP support site.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Possible to save a trimmed clip?Is it possible to save a clip after it has been edited. I
want to be able to save the new smaller clip to be used

clips and save them in a collection.

- Windows XP Security >> Folder Security gets changed back automaticallyI am running XP to access an NT file server. I change the security setting
to add admin and to change everyone's access so that everyone only has read
only. Before I do this I also go to advanced and remove inheritance.
However, after a little while Admin is removed Everyone has full control and
a ?user gets added which is a S-1-5-21-********** etc. We are running Active
Directory but I dont understand what is happening here and what is causing
this switch. Can anyone help?

- Windows XP Support >> Machine checkDuring XP startup sequence, I see in the Event Log, a number (~6) of
Machine Check records, ID26. The associated explanation says "unable to load
driver, missing or corrupt, etc". XP always runs up Ok in the end and
operates normally.
Is it possible to determine which specific driver is causing the problem?
In a boot log, I also note a cluster of "unable to load driver" entries
early in the sequence; this cluster, or parts of, being repeated again and
again. Eventually the boot completes.
The first entry always refers to "acpi drivers", so does this infer the
reason for the subsequent failures?

- Windows XP Hardware >> CD-ROM drivesI recently upgraded my Windows 98 to Windows XP because
something inside my Windows 98 crashed, and caused the
whole thing to go haywire. I installed Windows XP, and
everything works like normal. Except my second cd-rom
drive, which is an Acer CD-RW 20x10x40, apparently isn't
even in my computer. I open my computer and it only has
one cd drive in it, which is my DVD-ROM drive. My second
cd drive still lights up and opens and closes as if its
perfectly fine and working, although my computer wont
detect it. I've gone through the Add new hardware program
under control panel and gotten nowhere. This cd drive
didnt come with an installation disk either, so I'm lost
what to do. How do i get my computer to detect a second
cd drive?

- Windows XP Security >> Conflicting Spyware ToolsI've installed products from Lavasoft and 12 Ghosts to rid
my pc of scumware. Now that Ad-Aware is installed, it
appears 12 Ghosts is no longer working. Does one cancel
the other out?
Do I need both on my pc? I've got my firewalls on,
scumware blockers installed and all my security updates
from MS but it seems you're never really secure. Some
damned people out there need to really get a life instead
of "hackin'" all day!

- Windows XP Network >> After installing sp2 on XP Home, My network dosnt work!!I realised that this could be a problem for many people, since the
introduction of service pack 2. I have been trying to find a soultion for
this problem for many months now, but have finally found something that
worked! Feel free to use the instructions below if you are suffering the same
problems!
You need to use you Registry editor, which may sound a bit scary, but is
quite easy to use if you follow these instructions:
Click START,
Click on RUN
In the text box enter REGEDIT, and click OK,
The registry editor should open,
Click on the cross next to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Then go to SYSTEM
Then go to CONTROL
Then Select LSA
In the right hand screen you should see some icons appear,
Find the two that say restrict anonymous, and double click on them both.
You need to change both their value datas to 0
Once you have done this, Exit the registry editor, by clicking the cross,
and then RESTART your computer!
You should find that this solves the problem, Whatever the outcome, let me
know!!

- customize >> can't get new account workingI'm wanting to make seperate user accounts for myself and my husband, but it won't work properly. I create a new account (computer administator) but when I go to log on to it an error screen comes up and says
"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system. DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified.
Then when i go into that account I can't do anything. Can't change any of the display options like background and stuff. The only thing I've been able to do is change the start menu from xp to classic.
I'm sure this is probably a stupid question from a newbie, but I'd appreciate it if anyone had any ideas.
