- Windows XP >> DefragI can't get defrag to run completely. Initially when I ran it a warning
screen that looked like something displayed in DOS said there was an error.
The only way to get out of it was to do a hard boot. Since then I ran check
disk and it found to bad sectors and repaired(?) them. I have tried
re-running defrag and after a few minutes it was up to 28%
compacting/defragging files and a windows type error popped up stating that
a status code 128 with C:/windows/system32/services.exe prevented the
defrag,...then the computer re-booted and in DOS it asked for a system disk
to restart.
I have an HP Pavilion 7965 --- Pentium 4 -- 1.7 ghz --- 512 megs ram --- and
52 gigs of free hard drive space.
Whats wrong? Am I not running it right? I have shut down my anti-virus and
the system recovery areas before running it.
Question #2 ---- Does having bad sectors on my HD mean the hard drive is
going bad?
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Setup >> Changing the user name in "Documents and Settings\[user]"Hello,
The guy that set up my XP computer (a surprise from my wife, bless her
heart) spelled my name wrong on the user account name. I changed it there,
but it creates a misspelled path name. That's easily changed, as well, but I
wondered if there are any unseen repercussions from doing so? Will any
programs not work because they are looking for "Jim Spieser\My Documents"
instead of "Jim Speiser\My Documents"? Will I have to make changes all over
the place? Am I better off just leaving it?
Thanks,
Jim Speiser (not Spieser)

- Windows XP >> Windows Compression lossless or not???Disk Cleanup keeps "recommending" that I can save space by compressing
my old files. A significant portion of my files are audio and video
files that I have not yet had the chance to burn to disc. What method
of compression does Windows use? Is it lossless? If not, I suspect
that it could severely damage my files. What kind of recommendation is
that?! I certainly wouldn't trust it to compress my files. Please
advise. Thank you.

- Windows XP Update >> MS Updates, Qhosts, Error 0x7c91103cI Have spent the best part of today reading and down loading anything and
everything to fix this problem, and like you nothing works. Why?
1. A virus that nobody can remove
2. Updates from MS stop working
What we need now is for MS and the major virus detection companies to put
their heads together and work out the best route to take.
It will be interesting to see who solves the problem first.

- Windows XP Security >> Want to boot clean but computer says I haven't got adminstrator riI need a clean boot to install some software due to conflicts. In the system
configuration I tick "Hide all Microsoft Services". When I apply a box comes
up stating "An access error was returned while attempting to change a
service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the
specified changes". As I am the only person to use the computer I find this
very strange. I have read previous posts on here where people have said just
ignore the error message but this does not seem to work. All the Microsoft
services are still ticked and there is no way that I can get them un-ticked.
I have tried installing the software anyway and keep getting an error message
"Doctor Watson Debugger" whilst trying to install it. Any help would be
appreciated before my computer goes through the nearest window.

- Windows XP Basic >> Scheduled jobsHi ng
I have got a job on a network drive (a database mdb) which should be
activated every night. I have made a scheduled task - where I use my own
username and password on a normal computer. This works fine. But this
solution requires that I am logged on to the computer. I would like a
solution where no one needs to be logged on - as long as the computer is not
shut down, user is only logged off.
I am just a regular user - I am not an administrator. I have read something
about using the AT command but I am not sure how to do that.
My job should run at 05:00 am every day and should activate MyDatabase.mdb.
Can anyone help?
TIA

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP SP1 Security update supportGartner is tell their customers that Microsoft is dropping security update
support for Windows XP SP1 on 10/10/2006. Is this true. They told us that
we will not be able to get the security patch for SP1 and must upgrade to SP2
or pay Microsoft extra for being able to download security patches for SP1.
We are a large company and it's almost impossible to upgrade all.
Where can I find support dates for Windows XP?

- Windows XP >> Dynamic disk ???Dear all,
Is it allowed to get the system disk to be dynamic?
I mean the disk or partition where there is windows
installed.
I ask you that because after having installed Xp, I have
used DIKPART tool to convert disk from basic to dynamic,
just for testing.
Then my system was still able to start after reboot but
when going to disk management console, it is reported that
disk is not accessible.
Could you explain me why?
regards

Windows XP >> Trouble with Windows Installer
I had a weird thing happen...I suddenly lost all evidence of my Office
components-Word, Publisher, Excell, Outlook, and Powerpoint. I can click on
a document and it will open in the program, but I can't launch the program
because they're gone from the program menu. My solution was to re-install
the programs. But lo and behold, when I try to re-install I get this message
"Windows Installer- This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the
patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application
vendor to verifythat this is a valid windows installer patch package." The
only patches I know of come from my Microsoft Updates. What gives?

That solution has to be extreme overkill. If double-clicking a
doument opens the program correctly, then the program is
installed correctly. All that's missing are shortcuts to the
programs, and worst case you can recreate those easily.

- Windows XP >> Desperately need help with no-boot problem.(I apologize for the cross post: pretty desperate here)
Hi!
I ran into some trouble yesterday. I rebooted my machine after
installing a program (disclaimer, I have no idea if the new program is
to blame since the machine has been running for a while - in fact, I
suspect the new application has nothing to do with this) and it freezes
at the WindowsXP Welcome screen (with the white status indicator at the
bottom).
The system is WindowsXP Home, SP1.
Pentium IV 1.8GHZ
Asus P4PE
Lot's of hardware (2 TV tuners, PCI Serical Port card, Modem, ATI AIW
7500, ebcam, NIC, Sound)
I'm pretty sure the freeze occurs when a piece of hardware gets touched.
I can boot to Safe mode. VGA mode won't load.
Here's what I've tried:
- Restoring the system to a known good config. No good.
- Obviously rebooting in different modes, etc., turned the machne off
for the night. No good.
- Used the Repair tool on the WindowsXP disk, i.e., went through the
entire setup and reinstalled all drivers. No good. (note: the machine
froze twice while installing devices. I removed the modem, serial port
card and disabled the onboard network and sounds cards and it finished
the setup, but it still freezes on normal boot, even without those items
installed).
- Removed all uneccesary hardware. No good.
- Wanted to remove the possibly offending piece of software, but no
uninstall program, not even listed under Remove Application in Control
Panel.
I'm pretty much at a loss here. It will literally take me days to set
this system up again. It's an HTPC with so much lovinh tender care it
will break my heart to have to start over. *ANY* help aon other things
to try is welcome.
THANKS IN ADVANCE

- Windows XP Hardware >> External HD never shows upI've got a WD My Book external drive. I used it for about a month.
Now suddenly it will not show up. I have two boot systems, each one
on a separate itnernal HD. the External USB drive will not show up on
either of them. I'm using XP Home SP2 + patches.
I thought Western Digital made good products. I thought USB Hard
Drives were good choices for backing up. Apparently I was wrong. I'm
really frustrated.

- Windows XP >> Networking issue....I have a router that I successfully config to share internet with my cable
modem with Win XP Home and Win 98. However, I can't config the two machines
to share files. Any suggestions on a quick way to network these two
computers. Secondly, do I need additional software so the XP and 98 can
share files? I heard it can be done with the software built-in XP Home, but
the help section is not much help because I can't get it to work.
I'm open for suggestions....

- Windows XP Support >> Some programs won't startRecently, programs have refused to start when clicking on their icons.
When I double click, either nothing happens or the program's window
opens for a millisecond and closes again. CTRL-ALT-DEL shows a window
with no programs running, so they are not running invisible somehow. If
I go to the Command Prompt (DOS?) and navigate to the program's
directory and type in the command string (found in the "Properties"
window of the Windows icon) to start the program, it starts - in
Windows - as it should.
Two programs specifically that do this are ACDSee 4.0 and Epsilon 9.0.
Others have behaved the same way but I just can't remember them
specifically.
I have another XP system and these same programs start fine from
Windows - so there is a setting wrong on the first computer. I just
can't figure out what.
