- Windows XP >> FAT to NTFS questionI recently installed Messenger Live and tried to initiate folder sharing.
Messenger indicates that my computer doesn't support folder sharing and I
must convert my FAT disk to NTFS. Are there any risks associated with this
and is it something I should do? Thank you.

trouble with webcam and to uninstall went through the "config" following
instructions to ininstall and then again following the instructions to return
the computer back to the original start up...Since then, when the computer
starts it comes up with a Windows Installation Window, then a wind that says
"Scan with a CD icon" next it says "Please wait while Windows configures
Scan" I am then asked to put in CD-Rom but it doesn't say which cd.....I
have gone to do another clean boot.....I have put the restore discs in (there
are 2) but they only go a certain distance and nothing happens.....Where have
I gone wrong. I did phone Microsoft but they wanted $80 to give me advice
and unfortunately I don't have that money at the moment so am relying on help
from this page. Thank you in advance

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update FailsHi, I'm running Windows XP SP1. When I try to run windows update I get the
error message "Updates were unable to be successfully installed". Below that
it says "The following updates were not installed: Microsoft Windows
Installer 3.1". The error code is 0x80070003. I've tried the fix here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;836949, but it didn't
work. Any other ideas? How do I update my computer? Thanks.

HD is new WD 120gb 7200rpm, was formatted to NTFS and
used as additional drive. Now I want to use this hd as
boot drive. I get error trying to install using XP cd.
I changed jumper settings, reformatted, changed from
dynamic to basic, currently in NTFS. Does install need
to be in FAT? Any ideas??

- Windows XP Setup >> XP home install hangs near the endOkay, here's the problem I am encountering. I am upgrading to XP home from Win98. I run the setup from the CD and choose to upgrade. It runs fine for the most part up until the end. I run into one issue that doesn't halt the installation but does confuse me. I get a message saying that something hasn't passed XP seal or whatever that is. The weird thing here is that where it seems like it should tell me what device/program the problem is, it is completely blank there and it gives me no information about what the problem is. I have clicked both yes and no for this error and it continues fine. It goes fine until it starts the first part of the finalization, upgrading programs and system info. It barely starts that, and it just hangs there at about 20 minutes to go. I've let it sit there for over 30 minutes just in case that was the problem, but it did nothing. It just sat there at the same point and it didn't give me any sort of error message whatsoever.
I've scoured the support knowledge base and tried many suggestions there and none have worked. I've removed a good deal of software and hardware from my machine and it still hangs at the same point. Any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate.

- Windows XP Network >> IPCONFIG resultsTwo of the results given when this utility is run are:
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . . . : Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
Most examples shown all show No as the response. I find no explanation of
these results nor how the setting they appear to report can be changed.
Please respond to the following questions.
1. What is IP Routing and WINS Proxy?
2. What are the steps neccessary to disable these setting?
3. Can either or both of these being enable affect the ability of the
associated computer to be accessed by other computers with these items being
disablede inorder to share filed?
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP >> Xp problemA friend of mine just got a new x64 system and it would not recognize the
files on his old hard drive, which has XP Pro service pack 2 on it. I
connected the hard drive to my system, which also has XP Pro service pack 2,
and set it up as a slave. The drive was recognized with no problem. I
copied the contents of the drive to a briefcase on my hard drive, and then
attempted to reformat the slave drive so I could put the files back on it,
minus the OS. There was a FAT32 system on the slave drive, which Windows
would not allow me to format or delete. My system froze, so I rebooted it,
and windows would no longer load, instead I got the BSOD. I attempted to do
a repair of Windows, using my installation cd, but was prompted that there
are files missing and that setup would be shutting down, which it did. I
have no idea why this would have happened, and anyone who might be able to
suggest a fix would be my new hero...

- Windows XP Setup >> My Pictures folder errorFor some reason now my 'My Pictures' folder now thinks itâ??s a music folder.
When ever I go to it in the top left hand corner it always says 'Music Tasks'
it thinks that there are music files when there aren't just pictures. Also
know you can't view it as a slideshow type thing when you right-click & then
view. All you do is; thumbnails, tiles, icons ect... This is very annoying
seen as I liked the slideshow view. Also if you do put in some music files it
will come up saying, play all or selection. I know that it will be something
to do with the settings but I'm not sure which settings and where.
I have been told to;
Right click on folder
Properties
Customize
Select the kind of folder
When I go to properties there is no customize. Under general there is all
the standard settings, like read-only and everything and how many mb are in
the folder. There is also a sharing folder so then you can share the
contents, which I don't quite understand and at the moment I donâ??t need to.
If I go to my music or my video's there is no customize bit either. When I go
to another folder's properties there is, a customize so you can select the
type of folder I would like.
If I go into the My Pictures folder through;
My computer
Documents & Settings
User Name
My Documents
My Pictures
It all seems to work fine and it thinks that itâ??s a picture folder. There
are a lot of shortcuts to My Pictures which is what I mainly use and these
donâ??t work. Here it keeps thinking itâ??s a music folder. If you go onto a My
Documents folder through and shortcut including the desktop it also thinks
here that it is a music folder. What has gone wrong and where in the settings
seen as itâ??s only some of the settings now seen as it can work through My
Computer ectâ?¦
Please help.
Thanks

Windows XP >> smartmedia readers
over the last few weeks i have been beating my head against my desk trying to smartmedia reader to work. I have tried carious different make readers and smartmedia cards, all with the same outcome. According to all the manufacturers sites no drivers are neaded for xp. However everytime i try a new media reader the same message comes up"cannot instal hardware. There is a problem installing hardware. Generic usb smc readerusb device. An error occured during the installation of the device. The specified service does not exist as an installed service." What does this mean? If you read the right ups on these devices, they are all 4 or 5 star products i am using. People also boast how easy they are to install and yet i know of atleast 1 more pc local to me that is having the same problem. Please Please can someone help me. Many thanks

Windows XP >> smartmedia readers
What version usb do you have? Most newer card readers are running at version 2. Your usb may be too old to recoginize it.

Windows XP >> smartmedia readers
Chk the specs that came with the media card reader and see
what ver of usb it used 1.1 or 2.0
then locate your motherboard specs and see if you can
handle 2.0 if it is required
Alternitive that may work if your mother board came with
an install disc run it i found that the drivers provided
by microsoft for usb dont always work.... this may
actually solve your problem

My motherboard supports both 1.1 and 2.0 usb. Unfortunately the same result occurs regardless of usb used. But thank you anyway. It's nice to see that people are willing to look at this problem on every level

Windows XP >> smartmedia readers
Take a look in the System and event logs to see if there are error messages
in there that are more helpfull.
I'm using an old Microtech CF/Smart media adaptor (USB 1.1) on WinXP Pro and
in the device manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers I have the
following driver "DPCM-USB Reader", which I think I downloaded it from their
web site.

- Windows XP Setup >> Problems with Office XP and VisualStudio.Netam running Office XP and VisualStudio.Net on a Windows
XP Pro System. All licenses were purchased through the
College I attend in the evening, and as far as I know are
full functionality.
I believe after I installed SP1 for XP, I started having a
problem with Office and .NET. Whenever I try to start
either program, I get a small window that says it's
performing an installation. I can either allow
the "install" to run it's course and use the programs, or
press the cancel button, but the window comes back
whenever I try to Save, cut, paste, or just about any
other action.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

- Windows XP Network >> suddenly can't configure network connectionsSince a week or so ago I have been unable to change my network settings, even
though the network is working.
I have a toshiba sattelite M45 S2652 with Windows XP Home, I presume SP2
It has built in wireless and ethernet connections, both of which have been
working perfectly up till a few days ago.
I usually set my IPs manually, this has been working fine for a few months.
I do it by opening the network connections window, right-clicking on one of
the connections, and selecting Properties. This brings up a dialog box where
I can set the TCP/IP configuration of the connection.
But a week or so ago, the Network Connection Properties dialog box began
appearing empty. Not blank, but just with none of the details filled in. The
cursor shows as an hourglass when hovering over the dialog box. The situation
does not change for hours, the information never appears. I have noticed that
CPU activity jumps to 100%, with Explorer using about 95% of it. If I try to
close the dialog box, it is reported as "Not Responding" and I must "End
Task", which causes Explorer to reset (i.e. the task bar and desktop icons
disappear for a moment).
This happens with both the ethernet connection and the wireless connection.
Also, of the little process icons that should come up on the right of the
task bar, the two network icons no longer come up.
Also, if I select "Status" from the right-click menu of either connection,
nothing happens: no dialog box appears.
But my home network (which uses the wireless connection) still works fine. I
just can't change the settings.
I think that the problem may have coincided with installing new software,
but I have uninstalled everything I can think of with no results. I also
installed the new windows patch (the one addressing the wmf problem) at the
same time.
If some system library file or files might have been affected, I'd be
grateful if anyone could let me know which ones they might be, so I can see
about replacing them with uncorrupted versions.
Alternatively, if I could learn somewhere how to set up my network
connections manually from the command-prompt, this would be an acceptable
work-around.
Thanks for any and all help.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> pagefile.sysI got an error on my 'puter today that said
my "pagefile.sys" was wrong and i need to go into
settings and change it. This was after scandisk chewed on
it for a while. I went in and looked at it, but the
setting was set higher than it said was required, so I
didn't change it. I had just installed "Pinnacle Studio
8", which is a DVD authoring program. I decided to go
into Norton and schedule a scandisk, and set it to
repair, then rebooted. I had only about 15Gig of stuff on
my 80 gig HD, but it said it had to "trunicate" the files
because it didn't have enough room to fix them. It
allowed XP to come up normally, but now my 80gig is
completely full! I used Norton to look at files on "C."
and I can see I have about 20-25 files. each over 500
meg, called something like "00084645.bmp" stored in
folder "c:\recycled\nprotect\", but when i go into
Windows Explorer, they folders aren't visible so I can
delete them.
Any ideas?
