- Windows XP Support >> Restart Windows XP causes log offJust wondering if anybody else has had this problem and maybe knows the
answer. I installed Norton Systemworks 2005 Premier a couple of days ago.
Since then, every time I restart my computer (soft boot or turn off
completly), when Windows XP comes back, I have to log in to my account again.
Never had this problem before Norton. I also installed from the Norton disk
the new .NET framwork 1.1. Does anybody have a solution for this so I won't
have to log in everytime I start Windows?

- Windows XP Basic >> Hard disk repartition questionI'm just about out of space in my XP op system partition and I'm hoping I
can expand that partition at the expense of the other partition/disk on that
hard drive, with a minimum of hassle.
Here's the situation:
* 20 gig hd with 2 partitions, one is C: with my o/s in it, the other is D:
with plenty of unused space.
* I use XP pro.
* I have Norton Systemworks 2003 installed.
Question: can I expand C: at the expense of D:? Is so, how? I can delete D:
if it's necessary.

- Windows XP >> Notebook Battery IndicatorI re-installed XP Pro on my Notebook and now there seems
to be no way to view any battery information. It always
shows AC Power even when unplugged. I have created a
profile that states that it is a non-docked mobile PC,
but there is still no battery information?!?

Protected by Windows XP SP2 firewall configured with "No Exceptions" and
"Don't allow Exceptions" selected. Is it necessary and/or advisable to

I get the error "unable to contact your DHCP server" when I do an ipconfig
/renew. I'll get a 169 ip address which I know is wrong. This used to work
for months and my laptop will work just fine. So it must be a problem with
my desktop. I have WinXP SP2.
The only thing I was doing was trying to add a router betwen my DSL modem
and my desktop. The router would not work. I used the installation disk
that came with the router. It just walked me through the same type of things
I would normally do via the 192.168.1.1 web site. The other thing that
happened is that I changed the password with my ISP (Verizon). But they said
that this was just for accessing mail on their web site.
So I don't know what happened.
I've installed a patch KB884020. And by the time you read this I've
probably used the WinsockFix application.
Please help - Its my Dad's PC, I'm leaving town in 2 days, and I don't want
him unable to access the internet because I tried to use a router.

Firstlt, yes it is 0x4.....80
All hardware checks out, re-installed OS with minimum number os apps etc. It
stil occur.
Although it occur randomly, it is more likely to happen when my satellite
vpn connection operates at more than 1Mbps. Note, I said more likely and not
all the time!!

- Windows XP Network >> Five-minute freeze after dial-up connectionHi,
What can have gone wrong with my dial-up setup that every time I dial my
ISP, and right after the connection is established, Windows XP freezes for
five minutes and remains absolutely unresponsive, except for the
displacement of the mouse cursor ?
For example, if I click on any given icon during the 5-minute freeze period,
the application is not launched. Not even the "Start" button responds to
clicks. After the 5-minute period elapsed, Windows unfreezes, everything
returns to normality and all applications (which I tried to launch during
the freeze period) are run at once, including *all* clicks on the "Start"
button.
I hope readers can figure out the problem from the previous description.
The anomaly started happening suddenly, and for no apparent reason, as I
didn't install or uninstall anything. I didn't make any configuration
changes either (e.g. TCP/IP properties, modem properties, etc.)
The system is virus and spyware/adware free. No third-parties programs are
running on the taskbar, just Windows' native programs and services. No
hardware was added/removed either. The modem driver is the latest. Windows
XP SP2 firewall is enabled, and so are the Windows updates via BITS.
At this point, and with no clues, I cannot myself spot the root of the
problem.
So, if someone knows why Windows goes through a 5-minute freeze right after
a modem connection to a PPP server is established, I will appreciate if
he/she lets me know the cause and the workaround, if exists.

- Windows XP >> Open Program stopping shutdownWhenever I close windows I am asked if I want to close a program called sample.
Try as I might I cannot fin this program in any of the usual places its not
an open application in task manager nor an open process, nor is it in any of
the INI files any ideas?
Its not causing a problem it just annoying

Windows XP >> Windows explorer
whenever I have windows explorer open and the contents
change and I go to change directories it tells me that the
directory is not accessable and "The filename, directory
name, or volume label syntax is incorrect." Also sometimes
on the left panel it will start to show tree icons for the
directories.
Can this be fixed?

chipsets. It works fine with other Win OS's and it works fine on XP with

Hi, for a security web application, I use Crypto API to encrypt the =
password in database on Windows NT... But we need to upgrade it to =
Windows 2003, for RND we tried to decrypt the existing password but all =
passwords are not the same, any idea?? (same problem with XP)

Tip #2 talks about turning off Window's built-in firewall,
since it does not customize well, just blocks everything
Wife's computer came bundled with Norton Internet Security,
which does have an option to allow file/printer sharing
My computer uses the free Sygate Personal Firewall, which
also allows customizing to allow file/printer sharing
(Sygate was bought by Symantec, no more free software!)

Following the steps in the article, and configuring both
firewall products to allow file/printer sharing, now lets
me print to Canon 4200 printer on wife's computer, which
was a "test" so I will know how to configure her laptop
(when it arrives) to do wireless printing

- Windows XP Support >> XP Pro Install Problem - Missing or corrupt hal.dllI am installing a xp pro on new 250 gb sata drive. When XP tried to reboot
first time during install it said it missing or corrupt ntoskernl.dll. I
tried new install again and now I get missing or corrupt hal.dll.
Note: I noticed when XP asks which partition I want to install on I
initially see two: one is about 8(mb or gb don't remember) and the other
238GB. I tried deleting the 8 mb/gb but can't so I deleted the 238gb
partition and start over. However same problem with missing or corrupt
hal.dll.
Assistance is appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> downloading interviews from recording deviceI have a Sony IC recorder (B25) and am able to get the interviews onto a hard
drive with clear resolution using an audio cable plugged into a high-input
jack on the CPU. But only into that ridiculous 60-second "Sound"
application! The interviews are hours long. How can I download them in real
time, using the audio cable, into a different application that doesn't
require a USB port for downloading? Right now i'm transferring them to
another device that has a USB port and the quality is absolutely horrendous.

I am using sygate firewall and when I check the remote host it shows my own
ip address of my linksys router.
But the mac address is different.
In the firewall the application name is blank
Any idea what is going on ?

- Windows XP Security >> Client XP Pro rejecting passwordsI have an XP Pro client machine on a SBS 2003 LAN that is now rejecting all
passwords as invalid. It denys login on both LAN and Local Machine. This is
for users as well as administrator logins.
The client has been working well. Another tech has now removed the machine
from AD on the server.
How can I gain access to the local machine admin account to reset the
passwords?
