- Windows XP Network >> Cannot connect a WinXP SP1 machine to an Apple/Airport workgroupHi,
My wife just got a new Presario 2100/Windows XP Home Edition and had no problem connecting to our ancient Apple/Airport (a graphite vintage) network to access our other two computers and my son's collection via the wireless connection. This was an important consideration in our purchase as she has COPD and limited mobility.
Upon installing SP1, all connectivity disappeared. I see a new security feature popped up in the "View available networks" dialog sequence -- in the "Wireless Network Connection" dialog box -- "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network even thought it is not secure." Crazy as it seems, I click this and nothing improves. Then I come back and it seems to have ignored my request to connect or simply defaulted back to a paranoid state. This may be the heart of my connection problem.
Anyone else experiencing the same inability to connect a WinXP SP1 machine to their old network of NT, 2000, 95 and 98 machines communicating via the Apple Airport?
Best regards, Bill in Inverness, IL

- Windows XP >> Installshield settingsI have installshield 4.1 installed on my computer (probably by
WordPerfect) under Windows XP.
My questions are:
Do I need this program or is it duplicating something else I might
have. Most of my applications seem to check for updated themselves?
If so how can I add more applications to its the Installshield list to
check for updates? (Now it has 2 Installshield and WordPerfect)?
I seem to have InstallShield Update service 4.1. However the
Macrovision web site lists 4.6 as thelatest version. Yet my
nstallshield program does not that it needs to be updated. Why is
this?
I found the Support section in the Macrovision web site not helpful or
have only paid support. Is there a page where I can submit questrions
at no charge?
Thank you.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Windows Movie Maker Profile 10I am trying to duplicate Profile 10 which is Video for broadband (340 Kbps),
but I want to change the size to 240x180 and load the profile in a batch file
for Windows Media Encoder. What Key frame interval is used by Movie Maker?
What buffer size is used? What Video smoothness is used? Anyone know the
exact Profile 10 settings? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> STOP 0x0000007b ErrorMy computer is acting up, and it's really annoying me. Here's the short
version:
I had a working install of XP SP2, but System Restore was not working. I
figured a repair install couldn't hurt, so I used a MSDN SP2 XP CD to do
a repair install. After I did this, the system would, instead of
starting up, throw a BSOD with an 0x7b error (apparently
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE) before it gets to graphical startup. Now, it
goes to graphical startup for a split second before giving the same
error. I did not make any hardware changes or install or remove any
programs before this behavior started.
Here's the long version of things I tried:
Repairing, using a burned XP SP2 CD from MSDN, repeatedly and at various
times
Repairing, using a factory-made XP SP1 CD from MSDN, repeatedly and at
various times
Converted partition from NTFS to FAT32 using PartitionMagic
Copied hard drive to new store-bought hard drive
(Subsequent steps all take place on new drive)
Restored registry from old backup (caused it to go briefly to graphical
startup before throwing same BSOD)
Parallel XP install to different folder - worked fine
Copied registry from new, clean XP install to old install - worked, but
booted to clean install
Converted drive back to NTFS
Wiped drive (zeroed out from Linux LiveCD)
Copied files from backups from about a month ago (about everything
except the registry, which was from last July), and copied other files
other than the windows directory from old hard drive
None of this has helped. I still get the error. I have yet to try going
back to pure backups, but since I didn't restore files from the windows
directory I don't see how that could make a difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what might be causing this error,
or how I can fix it?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Security >> Can no longer change Sharing / Security properties ??File sharing is working within my home LAN workgroup (WinXP Home, Win 2k and
WinME machines). All machines see each other and previously shared files
and folders. I can move files back and forth. My problem is that I on my
XP machine, I can no longer make new folders or files available or even
change the properties on already shared files and folders. If I r-click on
the file/folder, the 'Sharing and Security...' option is still there but
clicking on it seems to do nothing? Similarly, the 'Properties' option no
longer works?
Any ideas what I may have done to trigger this? and more importantly, how to
correct it?
Thanks, Bryan

- Windows XP Security >> Is it a virus????Any help would be appreciated. What I have been able to figure out is there
is something in the IE Temporary Internet Files that A. doesn't get deleted
when I try through IE, B. slows down the process of opening programs and
using Windows Explorer, and C. every time I run almost any Virus Scan
software, once that software gets to this particular folder, it forces me to
close the software. I reinstalled a couple, including Windows Defender, and
it detected nothing. Has anyone ever encountered this? Thanks for your help.

- Windows XP >> Win XP boot problem "Isass.exe error message"Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what the following message means
....
Isass.exe - System error
An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably
...........
if you hit OK it reboots... I used my pc this morning ...I do know my
pc will go to sleep after 15 minutes or so if not used and sometimes
the disk doesn't wake up ... you have to power cycle ...and it always
fixes itself but not tonight and nothing has changed .... it's a dual
boot system but the boot block is not on the actual windows disk ... I
asked before if it's safe to install the boot block on the Windows
disk without distroying data but never got an answer...
So is it easy to fix the System error ???
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> computer stops responding with a black screen when you start windoI ran the 'Compact Registry' function available in "Registry Mechanic" and
now when I boot up I get a black screen. I see the windows log-on logo and
the Dell logo at boot-up, but then I get a black screen. Also, I cannot
boot-up using any of the Safe Mode functions. Not even the last good
configuration boo-up option works. What happened here and how can I fix
this? I have over 500 pictures that I did not back so I hope I did not loose
any. Someone, please help.

- Windows XP Network >> Networking questionHi,
On my Laptop I have Win XP Pro Sp1.
I use the Laptop on my work and I connect to the domain.
My question is how can I connect the computer to my home network.
My home network is composed by a workgroup:
A router + a modem to the internet
I tried to connect a cable between my computer and the router but it's not
working.
When I log to the computer I have in the combo Bx: the name of the domain at
office, and the name of my computer.
Any help please thanks

- Windows XP >> Spybot warningsI ran Spybot and it came up with several DSO Exploit warnings. Information
can be found at http://security.greymagic.com/adv/gm001-ie/
The question is: should I allow Spybot to "fix" these problems or can they
safely be ignored?
They all have this message: "There's a security hole in IE allowing websites
to execute code without asking you first. You can find more information at
http://security.greymagic.com/adv/gm001-ie/"

- Windows XP Support >> Stop error 0x0000007eI now cannot get into windows xp x64 due to this flippen stop error.
It is all I get, no device name, driver, etc listed. Just the stop
error (and some other hex numbers in paren's).
Now, I got this after running a series of utilities ie: regclean,
defrag, and then sfc /scannow. The last time I got the above I came
across a site that suggested I go into the registry and change
something in the BOOT section of the registry that had to do with
diskcheck? A search of the registry doesn't produce a hit on diskcheck
(nor on checkdisk). What I do remember was that by changing the value
of whatever it was called to 0, I didn't get anymore stop errors at
boot. Something about the system trying to write to something but
loading faster than that can happen.....
AMD 64 2gHz processor
Any suggestions?
TIA,
Markus

RE: WIN XP, All XP Updates.
The program is VCom Utilities. What a nerve! I don't have many options,

I looked it up in the individual files in C:\ Program Files and there
are two such icons...among the many; one is the EXE file, the orher
reads "MXTASK" I didn't want to delete the exe. icon, and it would

Is there anything I can do to NOT have to deal with that irritating
Icon?
Thanks,

- Windows XP >> Phone Dialer uses all XP Pro resources but doesn't launchI am working on a friend's computers (3 total), all
running XP Pro. We have rebuilt the software from
scratch (reformatted hard drives, reloaded operating
system and all applications). The PC in question,
Computer1, is a Pentium III 600Mhz with 256MB ram with
40GB (33GB free). All Windows critical and related
updates (OS and Office) have been installed on all the
computers. When Phone Dialer is launched and the manager
comes up, no problem. But once you enter the phone
number and ask it to dial, Task Manager shows it grabs
every available cpu resource and does not launch for over
four minutes. I have compared it to the computer next to
it, Computer2, that is set up basically identicle (it is
a 933 Mhz with 512 MB ram). When Computer2 runs dialer,
it works just as it should, launches immediately and
dials the listed number. I have tried updating the modem
driver to see if this was somehow affecting the dialer
operation. I have the XP faxing capability loaded on
both PC's and it works fine on both, so I know the modem
is working properly. Looking at all of the processes
loaded in Task Manager, they are virtually identicle,
with type32.exe (Intellitype keyboard), wuauclt.exe
(windows update client) running on Computer2 but not on
Computer1 as the only differences. I have run out of
ideas of where to look for a solution and using Google
searches have not come across anyone with a similar
problem. Does anyone have an idea where I go from here?
ANY AND ALL ASSISTANCE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
