- Windows XP Support >> CPU sounds after power failureAfter a recent power failure my CPU now makes quiet noises when loading
pages, scrolling with the mouse, or during any motion in game play. It has
never done this before and I am at a loss as to how to correct it.
Any ideas on how to correct this annoying noise problem?
Also, any idea why this would occur after losing power, or how I can avoid
it in the future?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Takes 5 minutes to browse to a network ShareThis problem has been driving me crazy. Here is the
system setup and the symptoms.
- 5 brand new identical computers running Windows XP
Professional in a peer-to-peer configuration (Workgroup)
- 4 of the computers connect to each other and all shared
resources with no problems. Fast browsing, drive mapping
etc.
- The 5th computer takes 5 minutes to connect to any
other computer on the network for sharing files. It
connects to the Internet through a Linksys cable/DSL
router and cablemodem flawlessly. The other four
computers connect to the "problem" computer just fine.
Symptoms and efforts made so far:
1. Browsing eventually works, as long as I let the
computer keep hunting for 5 minutes or so. Oncce a
connection is made, things seem to operate as normal
until someone logs off, and then I have to go through the
5 minute wait again.
1a. if I try to interrupt the "browsing", I get a (not
responding) error, and pretty much have to reboot.
2. Running in SAFE MODE with Network Support works just
fine... fast browsing, etc.
3. Since all 5 computers are identical, I moved a
functioning Hard Disk from one of the other 4 computers
into the "defective" one, and it worked just fine!
4. I tried moving the Hard Disk from the "defective"
computer into one of the other working computers, and the
problem followed the drive (in other words the problem
moved with the hard disk"
- this tells me, that it is not the wiring, the hub,
the router, the NIC or even the computer that is the
problem. Possibly the hard drive, but there are no other
problems with using the drive. As a standalone unit, it
operated flawlessly.
5. I have reformatted the Hard Disk and reinstalled XP
Pro from scratch 4 times. I replaced the motherboard, the
NIC, checked the cabling. I have installed all available
updates.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can either
respond on this usergroup, or email me directly. TIA

- Windows XP Update >> RWW Q?Is it possible to configure RWW so that it doesn't log the user out of the

If so, could someone provide a reference on how to configure?

- Windows XP Support >> Add/Remove ProgramsI have Windows XP Home Edition/Version 2002/Service Pak 2. When open up the
Control Panel and try to open the "Add and Remove Programs", nothing happens.
When I click it, the Control Panel window goes "gray", but nothing happens,
not even the "click" I hear whenever I open any other toll in the Control
Panel (all others work).
I ran the "SFC /SCANNOW" and it did not help.
Any ideas anyone, please...

- Windows XP Security >> MBSA complains about SQL Server Authentication Mode / Can't Fix BCHi,
I'm a little baffled; perhaps someone here can help. MBSA 2.0 complains as
below.
The problem is the only contents of the SQL Server 2005 folder in Programs
is Configuration Tools. I've tried re-installing SQL Server Express to see
if it would install the proper tools to make the changes as described in the
help but no joy. The problem is with the instance installed by Business
Contact Manager.
This system is Win XP SP2; Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager (and
the latest updates); Visual Studio Express Edition 2005 with Visual Web
Developer
Thanks for any help you can offer!

Issue:
Service Accounts:
Result:
SQL Server and/or MSDE authentication mode is set to SQL Server and/or MSDE
and Windows (Mixed Mode).
How to correct this:
SQL Server Authentication ModeIssue
In Mixed Mode, user name and password information is stored in Microsoft®
SQL Serverâ?¢. Mixed Mode is only intended for use in networks in which the
servers, clients, and network infrastructure are physically protected, and
all users are trusted. It is included in SQL Server 7.0 to provide backward
compatibility with previous releases and to allow interoperability with
products that do not support Windows NT® authentication.
In contrast, Windows NT Authentication Mode uses the typical Windows NT
authentication mechanism, which was built for use in environments where
security is important. All authentication information is housed on the domain
controller rather than SQL Server, and it is protected because the
information is encrypted.
Solution
Change SQL Server on your system that uses Mixed Mode to Windows
Authentication Mode, if possible.
Instructions
To change SQL Server from Mixed Mode to Windows Authentication Mode
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then
click Enterprise Manager.
Double-click Microsoft SQL Servers and SQL Server Group, right-click the
server that you want to secure, and then click Properties.
In the SQL Server Properties dialog box, click the Security tab.
Under Authentication, click Windows only.

- Windows XP >> Update DownloadingOne of my terminals at work requires an update. The OS
is of the WinXP "Home Edition." When I access the
following website address:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
After a minute or two, the message "New Windows Update
Software Required." I then try to update the software by
clicking the "Update Now" button. After a few seconds,
the same reappears as if nothing was downloaded or
installed.
Is anyone else having this same problem? Any information
would be greatly appreciated.

The Problem is that when I use fast-user switching the second logged in

Is that normal or what did I do wrong in my setup?
Please help me!

- Windows XP >> Connection Conflicts. For several months now my messengers MSN & Yahoo, as well as Netscape and
Mozilla Firefox, have been unable to detect my connection to the internet. I
connect mostly by DSL through my Network port but also via Wireless when I am
out and about. No matter how I connect, I still can't get them to work now.
Up until around August or around there my Yahoo Messenger worked fine but
stopped when I tried to upgrade to the next messenger. And when I tried to
revert back to the older version, it still would not connect. Ever since
Explorer 7 came out it has been trying to update to it but 7 won't work
either, only version 6 and I hesitate to upgrade anything anymore.
A couple of days ago I got a bunch of updates and when they installed my
Yahoo Web Messenger stopped working. I can receive messages but mine won't go
out to the recipient.
I am frustrated to the point of deleting all the updates ever installed on
this computer. I have a Gateway laptop with an Intel Centrino Processor and
512 MG RAM, and an 80 Gig hdd.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Maintaining a standard OS imageHi All,
I'm sure I read somewhere recently that someone was using the windows
toolkit to maintain a standard OS image.
What I mean is:
A student logs onto a pc, they install some software or change the OS in
some way.
To reset the pc back to it's standard image, all that is needed to be done
is a reboot & any software or changes that the student had made to that OS
are lost!
TIA

Windows XP Setup >> installing xp (out of range)
For a long time i ran a diffrent os than recently I decided to install xp on
my machine , because the campus I attend here requires xp.
So I recently went out and bought a windows xp full installation disc. (lost
information for last disc I had)
Using the windows xp disc (oem edition) I format my hd and allow xp to
create a new partition .. the issue comes after the first reboot it will
start to install, and during the process of "installing devices" the setup
will stop with a error message of "out of range" or "frequency out of range"
depending on monitor used. approximitly with 34 minutes left every time.
I found the self help on microsoft webpage stating forcing standard hal ,
which had no sucess (f5 or f7)
The video card is a geforce4, I know windows xp will run on the system
because long ago I had windows xp installed on this system.
Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Could be because you have an OEM disk - support is to be provided by that
manufacturer.

Windows XP Setup >> installing xp (out of range)
There is exactly nothing diffrent from oem edition and retail version.
OEM edition is usually sold companys to install on computers they build.
There is no diffrence from oem besides that.... Call local tech support in
your area buddy and they could tell you the exact same thing.
Here is something that might shock you... If you have a retail disc and a
oem disc...
You can use the retail disc to install and the oem activation code to
activate it.
There is no diffrence!
For it being oem there is no direct windows xp support because they want you
to pay 100$ extra for the ability to get support. (yet you still have to pay
for support)
The same drivers installed with a retail version is installed with a oem
version.
Just like a retail version the oem version supports hal installation for
installation without the drivers from each of the companys webpages (for the
hardware)
So please explain to me whats the diffrence? I am waiting?
Rude... sob...

Only if you hack and reburn the CD.
An OEM CD will not take a retail product code and vice-versa.
There is also the licensing/support factors - which makes up the meat and
potatoes of the difference between an OEM licensed and Retail licensed MS
product. However - just concentrating on the CD - the difference is limited
to the product keys one or the other will accept (unhacked.)

A couple of things to try;
Reseat the vid card, or move to a different slot if one avilable
Set bios to defaults, I assume your mobo doesnt have on board vid that
requires disabling?
You said you formatted using the install cd, did you first delete any
partitions?

You might want to take a look at this article.
Setup stops responding with 34 minutes remaining
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828267
If possible, you might want to try a different video card.
Good luck

Windows XP Setup >> installing xp (out of range)
See if this helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=828267
If you also have integrated video, switch to integrated after removing
the video card.
Try a different monitor.
"there is no direct windows xp support because they want you to pay
100$ extra"
Like nearly all businesses, Microsoft wants to be paid for what they
do.
OEM is cheaper and thus comes without free Microsoft support.
Retail comes with FREE Microsoft installation support.
Support for OEM, if any, comes from the seller.
One of the many reasons you paid less for your OEM than others pay for
retail.

Windows XP Setup >> installing xp (out of range)
Well compatablity isn't the issue with the card (Geforce4 mmx) the vid card
is made for windows xp.
I have had a previously installed windows xp on this system (without
changing the hardware setup), but than i ran linux for a long time... now
planned on installing windows xp again and poof... the disc is scratch and i
no longer have my activation information.... SO...
"If you also have integrated video, switch to integrated after removing
the video card.
Try a different monitor. "
No integrated video..
I have tried different monitors .. Both crt's one from a emachine and one
from the originally built comp (like 24 inch screen)
"A couple of things to try;
Reseat the vid card, or move to a different slot if one avilable"
(The above i have not tried but can not see the reasoning behind it...)
You think the hardware ports are getting interfered by some other hardware?
If that was the case the system would have never had a os on it...
"Set bios to defaults, I assume your mobo doesnt have on board vid that
requires disabling?"
Yes, my bios settings are default and my motherboard doesn't have on board
vid.
"You said you formatted using the install cd, did you first delete any
partitions?"
Yes, I formatted the entire hard drive. First deleting the partitions than
formating the entire size of the hard drive (from exp i know if later i wish
to dual boot you must install windows first.)
Retail = Ability to call technical support over the phone or directly email
them about installation problems free (anything else costs money)
OEM = No free technical support from MS. (Self help, Internet forums, news
groups, Local tech shop ) ect... if you need help or call MS for 59.95 (oddly
enough still cheaper than diffrence of retail and oem? OEM= ~$90... Retail =
~$200 , diffrence of ~$100, which is what cost of 2 calls?)
Most small companys use oem ... why? Cheaper with legal licenses...
Thank you to some of you for trying to come up with some ideas.. to the rest
Its not like what I am doing is ILLEGAL its COMPLETELY LEGAL! geez... flame
off please... I bought my version of windows from a store like everyone
else...
When i come up with the issue i will post back incase anyone else ever has
this problem.

Windows XP Setup >> installing xp (out of range)
'Reseat vid card or move to a different slot'
For some reasons, in which I'm not entirely sure, the win installation (or
card) can sometimes be brought back to life by moving it to a different
slot. (possibly something to do with interupts)
I have experienced this myself with a card (not vid) that win refused to
recognise, I moved it to another slot and it was fine

- Windows XP Support >> Blank screen on remote laptop after disconnecting from remote deskI have a HP Compaq nc6400 laptop running Windows XP Professional Service Pack
2. I connect to this laptop (which remains docked with lid closed) from
another computer using Windows Remote Desktop. After I disconnect the remote
desktop from the other computer, if I come back to this laptop and open the
lid, the display stays off and never comes on. The laptop also will not
respond to mouse and keyboard input locally. However, this issue does not
happen if I left the laptop with the lid open, before I connect to it from
the other computer (through Remote Desktop, of course).
The laptop is still running - I can connect to it by remote desktop again
from another computer to resume the remote desktop session. But the display
remains blank and keyboard and mouse are unresponsive locally, unless I
reboot the laptop or hibernate and resume it.
I contacted HP Chat support and did a firmware upgrade, and display driver
and Windows update but to no avail. They think this is a Windows issue and
they can't resolve it.
Several people seem to have this issue on computers from several different
hardware manufacturers, and has been noticed for more than a year now. This
seems to be related to the issue described in the following links, and seems
like an ACPI or Power Management issue with the Remote Desktop Server. Please
help.

- Windows XP Setup >> QOS Packet Scheduler And IEEE 802.x Authenticationwe've just got a few XP boxes in for deployment, we've been a w2k shop up
until now. I've completed a RIS image of the boxes but when the image is
installed the QOS Packet Scheduler and IEEE802.x Authentication is
installed/turned on. Are both of these removeable via the riprep.sif file?
we use neither.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Deleting Temp File (Wise~temp.exe) ?Is it safe to delete a file called "Wise~temp.exe" (8608KB) that I have in
my C:/Documents/~/Local Settings/Temp folder? Have some very large files
with exe extensions, that I am sure where placed there for installation
purposes of a program. Another file I have is named " sp87zry5he.exe" size
1,530,640 KB...I have no recollection where these files came from or what
programs they are associated with. Just need to recover some HD space and
would appreciate any advise on deleting these TEMP folder files .

- Windows XP Network >> Home Networking ProblemHi I am running 2 computers with WinXPPro on them both hooked to a Belkin
dsl/router hooked to my NetDSl800 router on MSN. They both where able to
connect with each other, print from 1 printer and transfer files, etc. They
both connect to the internet by ok and since i added Windows Spyware and both
upgraded the SP2, I cannot connect to each other. Oh I also have been running
McAfee for ever with no problems at all. I too love the sevice pack but
wondering what i can do or do I need remove to get my home network back
working again.
I turned off both firewalls and it did not help.
I went to the CMD screen and have pinged the IP addresses to both computers
and it responded but when I pinged the computer names, it worked on only 1.

- Windows XP Network >> Unable to access networked computerPlease help.
I have a small network at my house with both wireless and
conventional LAN connections. When trying to set up the
network, I am continuing to have connectivity problems.
When I am on my desktop computer, when attempting to view
my workgroup I get the following error:
[Workgroup Name] is not accessible. You may not have
permission to use this network resource.
All of the other computers in the workgroup can see and
access each other, and they can see but NOT access the
desktop.
I have tried applying the remedies from Microsoft article
#318030 which concerns the error message I receive. This
does nothing.
I know that it is probably somethng really easy and
stupid. Like some sort of setting that I am missing, but
this drives me crazy.

- Windows XP Support >> USB Combo Card reader pauses XP startupHi, I'm having a strange problem. Just bought a "USB 2.0 Combo 23 in 1
card reader/3 port USB hub". All works fine when it is plugged into
the USB port on the computer while the computer is on. If I leave it
plugged in and turn the computer off, and then turn the computer back
on at any time, the combo thing pauses the computer startup at the bios
screen. As soon as I unplug the combo it resumes startup and loads
windows. Any ideas?? as I don't want to have to unplug the combo each
time I start up the computer.
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Automatic update is being controlled by the network administratorI have been trying to turn on Automatic Update (pre SP2) but the options are
grayed out on the config screen. I ran a security check from the Microsoft
site and it said that my Automatic Update is being controlled by the network
adfministrator. That's interesting seeing as how I'm on a standalone machine
at home.
I had a nasty virus a while back and I had to remove it manually with some
registry edits. I may have screwed AU up at that time.
Now I need to know how to change Auto Upd back to local machine control.
Thanks in advance for any help
