- Windows XP Security >> error message when activating xp's firewallhi, i am having a problem with the activation of windows
xp's built-in firewall. when i click OK to save the
changes after checking the box activate it, an error
message appears: "An error occurred while Internet
Connection Sharing was enabled. The dependancy service or
group failed to start." Thus, the firewall isnt enabled.
why is this happening and what is the remedy? any help
would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Fax Modem not able to send or recieve.....Hi, I hope this gets through now, as I am not used to this type of newsgroup.
I have been trying to set up my Fax which is part of Windows XP.
I have set it up and connected it to the phone line, but it isnt being
recognised. I've had somebody try sending me a fax as well, and they cant,
and I'm stumped as to why it wont send or receive.
Can somebody help? I have this feeling it might be something to do with the
TSID and CSID. I am not sure I understand what they are.

- Windows XP Security >> Advertisment PopupRunning Windows XP w/sp3, McaFee firewall, virus scanner 24/7. Have tried
Adware, Pest Patrol and a couple more I can't remember right now.
About every hour or so, time is not exact, a advertisment window pops up,
telling me I have a windows messager overflow error and states to go to the
site. UPDATENOW.COM. Of course going there, they want to charge 19.00 for a
windows patch, which I knew was bogus right from the start, microsoft does
not charge for their patches. But I can't seem to find where this popup is
coming from. Nothing seems to find it. I understand that Mircosoft is
already aware of this site, so was wondering if they knew how to get rid of
the advertisment

- Windows XP Security >> Password Mysteriously RequiredMysteriously, my Win 98SE Laptop began asking that a
network password be entered in order to access my Win XP
Home system folders and printer. These items are properly
shared, and previously I could print and access files at
will without the use of any password. Note that both
systems were initially configured to operate without
passwords. Presently, I'm unable to print from the laptop
and cannot access files on the XP system because of being
asked for a password that to my knowledge does not exist.
Any ideas for corrective action?

- Windows XP Setup >> F8 key problem on setupHi everyone! I'm trying to reinstall XP home on my husband's computer.
Here's the catch: after reading the agreement, you either press F8 to agree
or escape to exit.
No matter what I try, the F8 key *does not work*, And this doesn't happen
with one XP Home disk, but two of them! Obviously there's some wort of boot
up keyboard thing going on.... has anyone seen thhis before and can anyone
help?
And the sooner the better, because my husband without a computer is VERY
WHIIIIIIIIINY! :-)

I am TERRIBLY cruel to my cat. I tease him with a vine tendril
until he either jumps up in the air to bat at it or zooms around
in a circle until he gets too dizzy to stand up. What is cruel about
it is that I don't do it nearly as much as he wants me to.

TEMP=C:\DOCUME~1\user\Local Settings\Temp
TMP=C:\DOCUME~1\user\Local Settings\Temp
This should be :
TEMP=C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALS~1\Temp
TMP=C:\DOCUME~1\user\LOCALS~1\Temp
So not the whole path is translated to 8.3 notation only the first part.
We have ben unable to find a way how to control this function.
Can anyone help.

Bij calling my provider I got an error message says 'A
TCP/IP error 0x800CCC15 and 13. So I can't get any mail.
Only if I use McAfee spamkiller I'm be able to received
mail included spam on ALL 5 email adresses?
How come?

The latest security update failed for SP 2 in my WIN XP Pro. And now, any
AntiVirus or Security Programs won't start, Trojan-Remover won't auto start
at bootup, regedit.exe won't function at all, and even Trend Micro's
PC-Cillin Housecall or any other Antivirus Site refuses to function or
download their S/W so I can't search for infections on my PC from
anywhere!...almost like a parasite conspiracy, unless I accidently removed
valuable files with Spyware Doctor, PC Rescue or HiJackThis while I attempted
to remove flash pop-ups that just wouldn't go away...all of these programs or
sites will wink or blink or flash a window momentarily on-screen as if to
start, then disappear. The same occurrs for HiJackthis! An error 0X80070424
does occur when I attempt to update the latest security from microsoft
Windows Update whether I try manually or automatically, but all the helpful
advice I found here was followed and acted on for this error, and the problem
is still there. Is it an Active X or OCX problem?
I can't disable the System Restore function, so, of course, when I tried
a restore point, it re-loaded any viruses I acquired around Christmas time.
It even refused to restore at first for several tries. I finally got one
Norton site to scan my 20 gig drive... it took 4 hours...and it reported that
101 files were infected with the W32.Tibick virus! I can't get rid of it
because none of the AV programs will start or function in any way to remove
any viruses. At least my Ad-aware SE, and PC Rescue, and Spybot, and
Trojan-Remover appear to work when I start them manually... Help...

A script I was writing accidentally created a large number of files (more
than 10,000 of them, with names no_1.txt, no_2.txt, etc.) in the root
directory of my C: drive. When I tried to reboot, I got the message: "NTLDR
is missing", and I cannot boot the computer (a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop).
This problem is described by MS in their KB article Q329397, where they
suggest that you obtain and run a file named BCUPDATE2.EXE.
I was able to load the XP recovery console, and I can see that everything is
there (NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM, the 10,000+ files, etc.)
I will try to get BCUPDATE2.EXE tomorrow from MS, but I have a number of
other questions:
1. Once I get BCUPDATE2.EXe from MS, I am going to have the same problem.
How a I going to copy BCUPDATE2.EXE to the hard drive of the problem
computer? (and I am not sure whether it can execute external commands)
2. Because I upgraded to XP SP2, BCUPDATE2.EXE may already be in some
sub-directory of my computer, but it is difficult to find it because the
recovery console does not search across directories.
3. The MS article suggests a work-around by creating a boot diskette. My
computer does not have a diskette drive, but I would like to create a boot
CD-ROM. Is this possible? How do I do it (using a W98 machine and the XP
CDROM)? To make matters worse, this
laptop has trouble booting from the cdrom. It works one time in 50 tries
(the other 49 times, it seems to ignore the "boot from cdrom" instruction
given while booting.
4. I would like to delete the 10,000 files I accidentally created (will
this solve the problem?) but the recovery console does not let me use
wildcards. I created (in another computer) a batch file to delete these
files, but I can't copy the batch file to the problem computer. Can't eject
the cd cannot read from network, cannot read from USB memory stick. Any
suggestions.
I would appreciate any suggestions. this is driving me mad!

- Windows XP Update >> Update Problem SolvedHere's a procedure that worked to solve automatic update failure on my XP
Home SP2 machine.
Symptoms: www.windowsupdate.com fails, claiming that one or more needed
services weren't running: BITS, Automatic Updates, or Event Logs. In fact,
they were all running.
Here's the procedure, emailed to me, apparently by a subcontractore to MS
Support.
--------------------------------------
The issue is most likely related to some incorrect system configurations. To
resolve the issue, we can use the following steps. We can test the issue
after performing each step.
Step 1: Reset Internet Explorer settings.
==========
1. Click Start, Run, type: inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
2. Select the General tab, and in the Temporary Internet files window, click
Delete Cookies, and click OK.
3. In the same tab click Delete Flies, check the "Delete all offline
contents" box and click OK.
4. Click on the "Security" tab. Click on each zone and click the button
"Default Level".
5. Click the Advanced tab, and click "Restore Defaults".
6. Under the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restarting).
7. Click to select the Use HTTP 1.1 and the Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy
connections check boxes.
Step 2: Check the local Windows Update services.
===============
This issue can occur if three services have not been configured correctly.
Please refer to the following steps to check them:
1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the
open box and click OK.
2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".
3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account"
is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is
unchecked.
4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If
not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic".
Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the
service.
6. Repeat the above steps with the other two services:
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Event log
Note: The Startup Type of BITS can be "Automatic" or "Manual"; the Event log
service is enabled on all of the hardware profiles, which does not have an
option to enable or disable on certain hardware profile.
Step 3: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.
===============
This behavior may occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update has been
corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please
be assured the folder will be created again when we visit the Windows Update
site again.
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.
net stop WuAuServ
2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.
net start WuAuServ
Step 4: Re-register the Windows Update components.
=================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.
2. Run the following commands:
Regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Regsvr32 wuapi.dll
Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Regsvr32 wucltui.dll
Regsvr32 wups.dll
Regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Regsvr32 qmgr.dll
Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
Regsvr32 jscript.dll
We will receive "succeeded" message if a component is registered
successfully.
Step 5: Disable firewalls or other Internet browser programs that can affect
the Internet connection.

The following programs can affect the connection to the Windows Update site
and I suggest you remove or disable them:
TweakMASTER DNS
Web Accelerator
Download Accelerator
GetRight
Browser Blaster
Sygate Personal Firewall
Norton Internet Security
Freedom Firewall
Zone Alarm Firewall
If you have any other similar programs such as a pop-up blocker, please also
temporarily remove or disable it to test the issue. If this issue appears to
be related to a firewall program, I also recommended that you contact the
firewall manufacturer to obtain the information to configure the firewa ll
options to allow the access to the Windows Update site.
Step 6: Reset the proxy list (and bypass list).
==================
This issue can occur if the proxy has not been configured correctly. Let's
first reset the proxy list.
1. Open Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advance.
3. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
4. Quit Internet Explorer.
5. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
6. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.
proxycfg -d
proxycfg -u
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

- Windows XP Hardware >> Disk in Disk Management just showig up as basic BOOT partitionHi all,
A colleague had his laptop fail on him (serious power/battery), and I'm
trying to suck the data of the disk.
The disk is a Toshiba MK4025GAS.
We've put it in an external USB 2.5" disk chassis, and it is visible to
XP.
However, in Disk Management, the disk is coming up as just a partition
called BOOT. It is also 'healthy (active)', and is showing 37.25GB
NTFS.
Is there anything more I can do in XP to actually see what's on the
disk? There are not options in Disk Management to do much - for this
disk, the only one which is enabled is 'delete partition' (which I
don't feel inclined to do!).
Any thoughts??

- Windows XP Hardware >> Keyboard bleeps onlyHi,
Having a problem with my keyboard on the other PC. The keyboard emits a
single, short beep when each key is pressed and no characters appear on the
screen in any program. Everything else works fine. It was all working fine
up until yesterday. Running XP home on a generic PC.
What I've done so far is to swap keyboards over, and the fault still remains
on the other pc with a different keyboard. I've also tried a USB keyboard.
That works fine on this PC, but has exactly the same beeping problem on the
other pc. I've uninstalled recently installed programs just in case and am
now wondering what to do next.
I get the feeling it's not hardware, as the same fault is with usb and ps2
keyboards, though I could be wrong.
I am contemplating reinstalling XP again, but I'll then have to re-input the
serial number which might prove difficult without a keyboard!!
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to solve the problem before I
re-install windows? Also, what happens if I install windows and can't enter
the serial number???

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Security AlertFor some reason Windows Security Alerts is telling me that my virus
protection is not turned on. Norton, my virus protection, is turned on.
When I go to the Windows Security Alert Center it says to check my virus
protection, it does not say it is turned on. I have updated with windows
recently and this was the result. Please advise me on what to do. The red
heart with the X in the center is showing at the bottom of my toolbar.

- Windows XP >> Copying .bsc files to a usb hard diskI was copying some folders earlier today from an internal hard disk to an
external usb hard disk, using both standard drag and drop and xcopy within
Windows xp, and in both cases the system was freezing - causing numerous
hard disk errors relating to the external usb hard disk, such as
"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging
operation."
Anyhow, after a bit of probing it turned out that all files were copied over
correctly except for one - those with a .bsc extension and that it was these
that were causing the errors / freezing.

Oddly, copying the .bsc files from one of my internal disks to another
caused no problems, and neither did copying the .bsc files from an internal
hard disk to a network shared folder on another computer. The ONLY scenario
that caused problems was copying the .bsc files from the internal disk to
the external usb disk (!)
Copying large folders of other files to the usb hard disk (which didn't
contain .bsc files) caused no problems and chkdsk also reported no errors or
problems with the external usb disk.
The files were originally created within Visual C++ 6.0, (from within the
IDE, although this program was not running during the copying). Stopping the
"Machine Debug Manager" service (which I thought might have been
responsible) also had no effect.
I also put a default installation of XP (without Visual C++ 6.0 or anything
else installed) into a version of vmware and the same .bsc files copied
between the virtual machine (located on an internal disk) and the usb hard
disk without problems.
Anyhow a mystery.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Timeline incorrect after savingI'm able to make the video without a problem. But when I save the video
either to CD or to the HD of my computer - the timeline is off.
Example: When creating the movie the music ends 30 seconds prior to the
video ending.
After saving the video - when you watch it - the video ends prior to the
music.
I'm not sure why this is happening.
