- Windows XP Network >> Wireless XP wireless help neededHi
I'm running a PC and a laptop, both with winXP Home. The PC has \ dlink
DI624 wireless router, and the laptop has a dlink airplus dwlg650. The
current situation is the following:
The problem is I can't get the PCs to see each other on the network and
therefore can't share files, even after unsharing and sharing.
The following is the state of both computers:
I can access the internet through my broadband modem (dsl 300G+) from both
PC and laptop
Both PC and laptop can ping themselves and the router, but NOT each other
The dhcp server is asigning IP addressess correctly and the addresses are in
the same subnet
I have internet connection firewall turned off on my PC. There is no option
to turn it off on my laptop.
I have enabled NetBios on both PCs
I have rebooted the computers more times than I can remember!
I have turned off all encryption during troubleshooting
Both computers are in the same workgroup and have unique names
I've read all the networking pages I can find, even Steve W's excellent
practically networked and no use. One last avenue I was wondering. I can't
seem to turn the router's own firewall off. Could this be why the PCs can't
see each other.
Also, I recently upgraded my desktop to winxp from win98se. I had the
network working intermittently on win98SE and then upgraded to winxp when I
started having network problems.
Please does anyone have any ideas? I've run network wizard on both
computers many times, logged off, logged on etc but to no avail. really
grateful for any ideas.
Thanks

- Windows XP Setup >> Task Scheduler and Norton SystemWorksI cannot get Norton SystemWorks Profession 2004 to do a daily virus scan.
It was easy to do with Norton SystemWorks 2002 and Windows 98.
I have called Norton Help, and not wanting to pay, all they would tell me
was that it was a Windows XP problem. I have researched their database, as
they suggested, and found no resolution.
I currently have a virus scan scheduled to run daily at 3:00 am. The last
time it ran was 5-20-04 and is scheduled to run next on 5-29-04. I have
other tasks scheduled, none on a daily basis, and they seem to run as
scheduled. There is no status indicated for any of the schedules.
Here is the task currently scheduled to run:
C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NORTON~1\Navw32.exe /task:"C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton
AntiVirus\Tasks\mycomp.sca"

- Windows XP Hardware >> Do we (nearly) all use totally oversized power supply units ?Recently I bought a power device for measuring the real power needed by a computer.
I put this measuring device just between the computers power cable and the power plugin in the wall.
After some days of measuring I was really surprised.
My computer (AMD Athlon XP 64 + PCIexpress) need on average 82 Watt!
Maximum during these days was 112 Watt.
So why do I need a 350 power supply unit in my computer?
Moreover 350W - 400W seems to be the standard.
When one take into account that the power supply unit operates most efficently only
when its is near to full capacity then it seems to me that all these 350W power supply units
are completely oversized.
150W would be sufficient.
All these gamers which run a high level video/graphic cards could buy a 400W PSU.
But for the "normal" office user this is bull shit.
Am I right ? Or what is the reason for these high capacity PSU ?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> minimizing windows for memory gainThere is a difference when minimizing windows from the
task bar or the active title bar. Minimized from the task
bar there is no difference in memory usage. Minimized
from the active window bar, memory usage drops
dramatically. When restored, memory usage is less then
prior to minimizing from the active title bar. Why the
difference? Also, since memory usage is important, how
can I "one click" active title bar minimize all the
windows ?

- Windows XP >> disj consistency check takws agesRunning xp, p4 3.0 Ghz and 512 mb Ram. Upon restart after a power switch off
shut down, the system checks for consistency on the fat32/ntfs system. Just
wondering how it will take to do this as mine took more than 6 hours to do
such a check.
I do not know where/how/when did I mess up the system. The only thing change
was the graphic card, which I do not think it should affects the system and
after that doing the same thing as kids usually do, play games. Load the
default in bios, its the same. Any idea as how to resollve the issue, thanks

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Easily confusedI have a DV tape with four different videos on it. I captured the first one with
Movie Maker, did some editing, and saved the final product in two formats, one
as high quality video (NTSC)which produced a .wmv and a second as DV-AVI which
produced a .avi. Did the same thing with the second file which worked as well.
On the third video on the tape, I got as far as producing the .wmv file, but
cannot produce the .avi file. When I try, the screen shows the "Save Movie
Wizard", acts as though the translation and saving is going along OK, until it
reaches 99% at which point it just continues ad infinitum and the computer will
not respond to stop the action.
In summary, three files all on the same tape, shot with the same camera, and two
work well all the way through a WMM session while the third fails to complete.
I've yet to find a similar case on any of the usual URLs. Anyone with a suggestion?

Both 'discussion' and 'troubleshooter' do not recognize

no response re: error number 0x80072EE4.
Has anyone gotten this error message before? What does it

- Windows XP Network >> Problem setting up network - Help me please!Hope you can help. Tried for hours!
I have set up a home network, consisting of router (wireless) plus 2 PC's -
1 wired and 1 wireless.
The wireless one works ok and when I want to view workgroup computers shows
both computers on the network. The wired one comes back with:
"Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available."
I tried swapping network cards over and still had the same message on the
same PC.
I tried pinging from the problem PC - it could ping the gateway and the
other PC but not itself.
I still have access to Internet for e-mail and stuff.
PLEASE HELP!!!!
Cheers

Windows XP Support >> Help & Support hangs
Hi.
My Help & Support Center no longer works as it should (I am using XP
Home). When I open it (from the Start menu or via F1), nothing seems to
happen. Then, after a few minutes, the help center does open, but when I
type something in the search field and hit Enter, the windows turns all
white and the programme stops responding.
I have tried all the suggestions at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com, but
nothing has helped. I also found a KB article that described the
symptoms, but the only available solution was to install the latest SP,
and I already have that.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I don't remember when it
started, but it used to work.

Thanks, but I have already tried that procedure (it is described at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/).
I can complete Step 2 ("rebuild the original Help and Support Center"),
but it does not help.
When I move on to Step 3 ("completely refresh the Help and Support
Center"), I can complete steps a through g, but when I enter "net start
helpsvc" at the command prompt, I get an error message saying that the
service name is invalid and that I can get more information by entering
"NET HELPMSG 2185".
Perhaps I should mention another oddity here: I have tried running a
System File Checker, but each time it asks for the original XP CD, it
asks for XP *Professional* not *Home Edition*, and I am forced to press
Cancel to move on...
Any advice?

Windows XP Support >> Help & Support hangs
The sfc message about Pro is just an error in the process. If you press "R" for Retry many, many times, the sfc should complete.
If no help, remove sp2, and repair the system.

If you run an XP "Repair"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it might go into a
setup loop, and you could lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you Upgrade setup from CD (that lacks sp2 on it.)

It didn't work - I pressed "Retry" a zillion times, but it kept giving
me the warning.

That did not work either.
I removed SP2 and repaired XP, but the problem persists. And now I have
a new problem:
Windows Update says I should download and install Windows Installer
version 3.1, but when I do, the installation fails.
I have downloaded the actual installation file and tried to install it
manually, but have not succeeded - it gives me an "access denied" error
and then restarts my computer.
Also, I cannot install new programmes that require Windows Installer, so
it seems corrupted.
I have tried the solution described at
http://computers.douglasthrift.net/winxpfaq/#faq1, but with no luck.
When I reboot in safe mode and type "msiexec /regserver", I get a
cryptic error saying something like "the service could not get access to
some subscriptions" (translated).
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

- Windows XP Network >> Networking/Hard DriveHi
I removed my hard drive from a dsl account, I am wondering
should I have used sysprep to prepare the drive for
removal from the network. I did this to format the drive
(it was acting funky) and thought that it might have been
infected. I then did a low level format with all zeros I
followed up with a fresh install from a cd-rom boot, only
it would not see it at booting it would fly right by the
boot from cd rom question that it asked. So my question
is, is sysprep a program that might have helped me in this
episode (Ticket) Oh I mention all this because I read once
that the sid# is involved with sysprep I am guessing for
sercurity reasons and removing the drive with all things
considered may have responed better when the reinstall was
attemped.

Nobody else is having the problem.
The PC's were set up at the same time and all apps were set to runas

first time. Nobody else has experienced any problems except this one user.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
