I'm going though a similiar problem while trying to do a clean
installation of XP Pro. I would be at the graphic screen (the one
where they tell you about XP's features while it's busy installing) and
after a while I get the message box "Copy Error: Cannot copy [file]..."
and asks if I want continue set-up. There's a "Browse" button where I
could point to the file on the CD. The CD-Rom seems to work okay
because I'm able to locate and select the file from the CD. But still,
it won't copy and keeps giving me the Copy Error message. So I try
continuing setup but I keep getting Copy Error messages for what it
seems like every dl_ and ex_ file that comes after, until I finally
decide to give up and try installing XP later.
My question is if it's likely that this copy error problem stems from a
problem with the memory. My computer has a 512MB DDR SDRAM. Also
consider that the reason while I'm doing this clean installation is
because while I'm on either Internet Explorer or FireFox almost every
time I get that dreaded "[Application] has encountered a problem..and
must close down" message along with the "Send Error Report" and "Don't
Send" buttons that don't do diddly-squat.
Any help will be appreciated

Fixed initial problems (CD-RW wouldn't work, strange files in msconfig),
trying to clean up now. Ran stinger - no virus. Told it to run chkdsk /f.
Won't run chkdsk at boot - "Cannot Open Volume For Direct Access". Won't run

- Windows XP Hardware >> Temperature problemI'm having a tough time keeping the temp on my CPU down. System is a P4 3.40
LGA775 - 2 SATA drives - 2G RAM GeForce 7600/512 video card - no
overclocking. Mobo is Intel 915GAV
I have 4 case fans, 600W PS fan and Arctic Cooler heatsink with fan.
Actually system is fairly quiet. Processor idles at 60C - mobo at about 38C.
If I run an application like MS FlightSimulator which uses 100% processor
time - temp goes up to 73 - 76C and mobo stays around 40C. I've replaced the
heatsink - cleaned both the processor and the sink - use Arctic Silver 5 as
directed and just can't get the temp down. Other than noticing the temp, it
doesn't seem to affect anything but I imagine it's shortening the life of
the CPU. BTW, I ran Intel system monitor and Speedfan and they agree.
Should I really be concerned and what else can I try? Any recommendations on
a better heatsink solutions?
Thanx,

Where can I change the default settings for this window?

- Windows XP >> no boot, system halts at mup.sys in safe mode, now what?Greetings,
I went through just about every solution on this forum and finally gave up
and reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Now the machine will boot, but all of my
applications will not work because (1) they cannot find the product keys
loaded when they were installed, or (2) cannot find a .ini file which is on
the disk in the correct spot.
All files from the old disk have been transferred to the new disk unless the
file to transfer was in use. I started off with a straight clone of the
drive, but the close would not boot with the same error that I started with.
I would like to avoid reinstalling every application I had on the disk if
possible. Is there a way to find/copy/update the registry entries and
anything else I need?

Windows XP Security >> Service pack 2 XP
SP2 is not supported as yet. It is only in Beta Version or more correctly described as Technical Preview
Looks like you are out on a limb for the moment, unless you are a Professional Developer and can have a direct dialogue with the technical support team at Microsoft
Failing that, use System Restore and reset your PC to a date prior to the installation of SP2
Then be patient and wait for the full product release

- Windows XP Support >> Add/remove programs and rundll32.exeHi
When I try to uninstall programs via add/remove programs my system hangs
indefinately.
If I open add/remove programs the list populates ok, I can choose remove,
then it hangs. In task manager a rundll32.exe process is taking 100% cpu
usage. I also get the same scenario if I try to use the program uninstaller
tool in CCleaner.
I've carried out a full scan with Spybot, AVG Anti-spyware, and NOD32 AV
(all fully updated to the latest definitions) and also run sfc /scannow.
There are no events or error messages, system just doesn't respond until the
offending rundll32.exe process is halted.
Hope this makes sense, Thx in advance

- Windows XP Update >> Many KBxxxxx.log failure files after trying to patch SP2Hi. Here is my scenario. I had to reformat my hard drive. I reinstalled XP
Home, and because of the fact that I am on dial up, my friend provided me
with the SP 2 on disk. I ran the install program, and everything worked fine.
I then logged onto windows update to download all of the patches. (count 54).
I received no errors about downloads and installs. They said they all
installed correctly, as far as I remember, and I restarted my computer.
However, I have 54 of those KB****.log files in my windows directory, and
they all have errors in it such as stating that the update.ver file is not
correct, and that files such as sp4.cab does not exist.
In addition, when I go into my add/remove programs, the only program that is
listed is the windows 1.3 installer, and the windows service pack 2. Should
the additional subsequent patches be listed as well? I know that when I go to
the windowsupdate site, it says that I don't need to install anything new.
Do any of you think that the problem was that it was a fresh install, that
didn't even have SP1 on it yet, or was it because I installed from a disk? Do
I actually have these updates and the log files aren't anything to worry
about?
I have posted below an example of one of the 54 KB******.log files. I also
have the windowsupdate.log file, but it is HUGE, so I'm not sure what to post
regarding that. Please let me know if anyone needs to see anything from it.
I've looked it over, and haven't found anything, to my knowledge, that seems
ominous. Anyone have any suggestions?
Sorry this log is so long, I'm not sure what, if anything, should have been
left out.
I will be posting the log in a nested reply to this post.

I went to play Winamp and this is the msg i get
"Erro

I've gone into my device manager and really not sure which audio driver I'm after
I have "Creative AudioPCI(ES1371,ES1373)(WDM)" which seems to look like is working properly....what it tells me in the properties anyways.(don't think this is what i want anyways...but ,like i said...not sure

One of them has information on the drivers in the drivers tab....the other doesn't have anything in the drivers tab whatsoever
Both, in the general tab, gives me no options in the "device usage:"
I'm thinking one of these i don't need, but not sure . Neither gives me the option to disable or delete
I have no volume control in my taskbar. When i boot up... i do get the windows start up tune
I've tried to find out what i can do, but the only thing i could actually find was something about re-installing windows and that the registry didn't change( or something like that) and that plug n play wouldn't go looking for my audio devices again. (make sense? this came from a windows 98 user
I've gone to a drivers website and really have no clue as to what I should be downloading etc
would be greatly appreciated if someone could point me in the right direction

- Windows XP Setup >> Install of XP Home Doesn't Recognize MouseHello, My sister gave me her computer that had come with XP Home, but she had
put XP Pro on. She wanted to keep the XP Pro license for her new computer,
so I installed the XP Home over the XP Pro, reformatting the hard drive in
the process.
It got to the screen asking me if I was connected to the Internet to
register the software when I noticed the USB mouse was not responding. I
tried several different USB ports to no success, and I was unable to click
the no radio button, so I hit the reset button. I hope that wasn't a
mistake. It rebooted and came to the XP desktop, but there are no icons on
the desktop besides a recycle bin and the mouse still does not work. The
system tray has the message asking me if I want to take a tour of XP.
How do I get the USB mouse to work? It is a functioning mouse - I plugged
it into this computer and it works fine.
HELP!
