- Windows XP Setup >> Only 1 window for Internet ExplorerI open my Internet Explorer, then right click to 'Open in new window' it
closes down the existing window, ie: I only have 1 IE window at any one
time. Grrrr How do I fix, Also if I just Save all My Documents on to
disc, am I then safe to put my original discs in and do a full fresh
Install of Windows XP to start a fresh with my lovely Laptop.

Microsoft with no problems. Lately when I install the
patch it starts up and when the Setup Wizard comes on it
stays on the screen for a few seconds and then
disapppears. I have downloaded the patches from

the driver necessary as the one on the disk supplied was incomplete.
However, the driver is now installed and yet I cannot use the device. I have
XP and the device is an AHP5000 Digital Edge.

- Windows XP >> Windows XP - used msconfig to uncheck startup items on system tray- Now these displays appearsI used msconfig to uncheck startup items on system tray.
So the items I unchecked won't startup on system tray.
Now each time Windows XP starts It would display a red screen for recovery
press F10 and after that splash screen black screen with this message
appears-
Please select the operating system to start:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Recovery Console.
This is annoying and did not appear before. How could I get rid of them?

computer freezes, and I can't eject the disk unless i turn the computer off
and back on. I have checked in properties, and it says the drive is working
fine, but I don't know what this could be. Can someone help?

- Windows XP >> XP drive get full after several days withour rebooting.Hello everyone,
just realised that my XP is consuming a LOT of disk space over time, which
appear to be re-available once I restart my machine. I use XP Home edition.
Here are the symtoms: Checking regularly the properties of my C: drive I
can see that the space decrease constantly. When I reboot my machine, the
disk space is back to the level it was when I started it previously.
I use the computer over several days without shuting it down, simply
folding back the screen of my laptop, which, I think, put the computer in
standby or something. After several days, the c: drive was FULL, althought
there was over 30 gig available at start.
Monitoring the system, I can see that the "system" process is constantly
performing "I/O write bytes". As i am writing this, over 2 gig has been
writen by this process over two hours. I don't know if the symptoms and this
fact are related or not.
If nothing occurs on the system, would it be normal for the "system"
process to constantly write? What could cause the Disk to get full and space
releases once we restart XP?
I have the latest XP version with all system updates applied. Any idea
what is going on in my XP, any suggestions to help me investigate this and
resolve the problem^

my computer everytime i turn the thing on it requires me
to use this password to start windows he says he cant
remember the password... is there anyway to bypass this

- Windows XP Support >> microsoft update for service pack 2I just found out that the microsoft updat----service pack2 was what was
causing my problems with installing new software. I also found out from
computer repairman that this update is causing all kinds of problems for
people with printers and other programs on their computers..so I uninstalled
the lousy program, I never had any problems with my computer until this
update. So if you installed this update and are now having problems with
your computers, this might be the cause.

- Windows XP Update >> removing second OS filesI was having problems with my win2k machine, so I upgraded to winXP.
Instead of running the xp upgrade while win2k was running, I shut down
win2k and booted from the upgrade disk. This installed xp in the
Windows directory, but did not upgrade my 2k installation. So, when
that was done, I had a dual boot setup -- 2k and xp. But I don't want
2k, so I booted in 2k and ran xp setup again which updated my 2k to xp.
It installed in the WinNT directory. This is what I wanted and I'm
very glad I didn't totally mess up my machine. But now I have this
extra copy of XP in my Windows Directory. Is it safe to delete all of
the files in the Windows directory and subdirectory? or were some of
them there before the XP installation?

- Windows XP Support >> error messageturned on computer and got to sign in when i got an error that says
EXPLORER.EXE-UNABLE TO LOCATE COMPONENT , this application failed to
start because SHDOCVW.dll was not found. re-installing the application may
fix this problem. tried to reinstall windows xp home but it says the version
on the computer is newer than the one on the setup disk so it wont let me
reinstall .please help

Windows XP >> single logon to network and in the field
I have a user ABC, domain XYZ who has a customized desktop when connected in
our office. Since this is a portable computer, it is used away from the
office. We connect multiple machines together in the field using a switch,
but the user cannot get his customized desktop since he cannot login to user
ABC, domain XYZ in the field. The only way we can connect in the field is to
use the login ABC and domain being the name of the local machine. Is there
any way in XP to use the same user and domain combination that is used in the
office, out in the field?

- Windows XP >> files won't openUpon clicking on a weblink while browsing, I received a message that it was
necessary to download a language update (Japanese) and restart in order to
reach the particular webpage. I did without looking too closely. Now neither
my word or excel files will open and instead every time I try to open a file
a window pops up saying that Windows is downloading Office XP PRofessional
with Frontpage but it can't until I put the CD in. Then I cancel...
Any advice on how to fix this? I'm at a complete loss

systems. As a result, as you might imagine,
DIFFERENT people have done the initial setups.
Let's consider just the customers who are
all CONCEPTUALLY setup the same way:
(i.e. using a cat5-wired connection to a router/cable-modem
and have Comcast as their ISP).
Now clearly, some installers use the 'Comcast-provided'
CDROM, and others (like myself) do not.
However, here's what bothers me: When I look at the
'network connection' section from control-panel, on SOME
machines I'll see an 'extra' (unneeded?) BROADBAND
section, but on others I do not. (If I did the setup, the BROADBAND
section will NOT be there.)
So, where's this BROADBAND section coming from? And, more
importantly, is the internal linkage sigficantly different?

- Windows XP Security >> Conflicts between user account password protection and scheduled tXP buffs,
I'm running XP home edition SP2, and use my computer from a secondary
administrator account, and I'm having a strange problem I can't figure out.
I'm using the Scheduled Tasks feature to make my PC come out of Standby to
run a Playlist in Windows Media Player. One of the problems is this task
will ONLY run if I have a password created for my admin account, and plug it
into the task configuration. Task just plain doesn't run if I don't have my
admin account under password.
This would only be a minor annoyance for me if the music played as it should
from the launch of the task scheduler ... unfortunately the WMA file that's
playing has random intermittently high pitched beeping sounds within it.
After a reboot the same WMA file plays just fine in Media Player, and just
to be thorough I scanned the music file with Norton, as I've heard music
files before that had viruses embedded in them that did the same intermittent
beeping.
So I've been doing a lot of reading in the Newsgroups here, and I'm
contemplating removing my current admin account in Safe Mode and reclaiming
all of the files on my PC under the main Administrator account. Not sure
what that would do however, so here's my questions (thanks for your help
folks):
1) Can I get a task to run out of Standby without a password assigned to
the account and to the task?
2) Is there an explanation for the music beeping problem?
3) Is it possible to remove my 2nd admin account, reclaim ownership of my
PC's files under Safe Mode (without risk of losing them) ?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Can't install Netgear MA401Asus L3800 notebook P4, 2 Ghz., 768 Mb., Windows XP Pro Sp1 with all
updates.
When I bought the Netgear MA401 PCMCIA, it installed without a glitch from
the cd.
I reïnstalled XP and can't get the MA401 to install after that.
I tried both the original cd and the latest driver from Netgear.
I read somewhere I should disable the Wireless Zero-service of XP.
I did this, didn't work.

- Windows XP >> Corrupted XP Home DiskI recently purchased an upgrade version of Windows XP
Home Edition and when it was nearing the end of the
installation it would bomb to a blue screen stating a bad
device. I tried the various fixes on the MS Website to
no avail. When I put in my other copy of MS XP Home, it
worked fine with the bad CDs product key. What do I need
to do to get this bad disk replaced. I have paid $100 and
would like a working copy and I refuse to pay the $35
charge for technical support on a non-working item. Any
help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

- Windows XP >> Windows Explorer shuts down for no reasonRandomly I'll get an error message that says "windows
explorer needs to shut down." Sometimes I won't even have
time to close it before it drops everything but the open
programs and leaves just the background with no icons or
toolbar. I've downloaded the upgrades as they come along
for windows, but is there something corrupt, or some file
that could be causing this that may not be showing up on
a virus scan?

Well, I'm about to take the plunge and upgrade from WIndows ME to Windows XP
Home. I have purchased an OEM edition of XP, as I want to to completely
start afresh and not have any 'legacies' from ME (plus it was cheaper).
A few questions.....
1. Is it necessary to run any fdisk/format utility prior to the
installation? I have had a look at a few sites, and it appears that a format
utility is actually part of the XP setup.
2. I intend to delete my existing partitions and create new (NTFS)
partitions. Will this be part of the XP installation process?
3. What are the consequences of doing this, with respect to any data I have
backed up before the installation? I suspect that with archive files (word
documents etc) it won't have any, but what about things like my internet
connection settings?
4. Is there any need to delete any files before I commence the installation?
From what I've seen, it appears that all I need to do is set my CD-Rom to be
the boot disk, insert the XP disk, and press reset.
5. Should I upgrade my BIOS prior to the installation?

I was using a portable running Windows XP Pro connected
to a Windows server on a domain caled work. I log on to
the portable via either the "work" domain log in or onto
a separate account on the portable regardless of whether
I have been at work or at home. My Emails are separately
stored under the different log ons.
What has happened is that the portable has now been
connected to a workgroup for home use by changing the
computer name and domain or no domain settings becuase I
have left the job I was at. This has meant that I cannot
access the user account set up via the work domain to
retireve my emails. I have tried to change the portable
settings back to domain networking but it will not allow
me to as it cannot find the domain controller to validate
the account username and log on.
Any ideas on how do I get the account back so I can
retrieve these emails?

- Windows XP Basic >> \SoftwareHello, can someone please help me. I bought the new Nokia E61 Cell Phone and
everytime I try to install the software from the CD provided, it keeps saying
access denied \SOFTWARE. I have checked all the permissions on the registry
and I have full access. It would be great if someone can provide me with

Will XP install on master of the first IDE controller only? My HDD shows up
as the master on controller 1. (OK I know 1 comes after 0)

- Windows XP Support >> svchost.exe Memory LeakI am in need of some sort of fix, I am having a memory leak with SVCHOST.EXE
on my machine. If I reboot is automatically goes to 70k worth of memory. If
I let it sit over night -it goes to an astounding 120-320k worth and my
machine moves like molasses on a cold winters day. I then have to power
button cycle it in order to recover. Plus that (I heard) isn't good for the
pc let alone harddrive.

When I click on Start Menue/Search For Files or Folders,
the "Start" button is 'pressed' but the Search screen does
not show up. I've searched through the archives and
various other places but haven't seen any fixes for this.
