- Windows XP Setup >> Curious ScreenSaver behaviorI installed the Plus! Aquarium screensaver. It shows a tank of swimming
fish and also has the option to produce a bubbling sound., which I turned
on.
The computer is set to go on standby after a longer interval, so if left
unattended, the screensaver comes on in about five minutes, and the monitor
and hard drive goes into standby after fifteen minutes.
Once in standby, the screen then goes blank. But the bubbling sound
continues.
I'm guessing that the screensaver is in RAM, so the process doesn't require
the use of the hard drive nor the monitor. Is that what's going on?

- Windows XP Setup >> Upgraded to XP pro and now Outlook Express Inbox is EmptyI just upgraded to Windows XP Pro Monday. I did the
update install. Now in Outlook Express all of my old e-
mails are gone. The contact list is still there, but the
in-box is empty and all of the sub folders I had created
under it are gone. This is a disaster. To a lesser note,
all of my Deer Hunter 3 Hunter Profiles are gone. Please
tell me there is something I can do to get this back. I
can hunt more deer, but the old e-mails were really
important and there was never a way to back them up.
Thanks

- Windows XP Setup >> Clean install of XPStarting from a W98 boot floppy, the installation starts to copy files but
then just stops and waits forever.
Starting from the downloaded XP boot floppies, the install comes up with an
error #7 saying it cannot copy the NTKRNLMP.EX_ file on disk #2 and exit is
the only option. If I boot from the CD it stops saying it cannot find the
end user licence agreement.
I have to do a clean install, any suggestions?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Video capture failsHello,
My Sony DCR-TRV22 has offered loads of movie-making fun up till now. As of
today, this is what happens when I try to capture video:
1. Tape rewinds okay
2. Capture starts and immediately pops up this error message: "The device is
not responding. Close any other application that is using the device and
try capturing again."
As far as I know, I have no other applications using this device, and MM is
the only application open.
The only recent/relevant changes on my system that I can think of are:
1. I installed Power DVD 4.0 and (after many MM crashes and PapaJophn's tip)
the recent patch from CyberLink (which solved the problem).
2. I had some network and security issues during which I accidentally
enabled a firewall on the 1394 connection. Since then I have disabled that
and then uninstalled and reinstalled the connection. I have also tried to
"repair" the connection, but the system tells me that TCP/IP is disabled and
cannot be repaired. This seems somewhat strange since the TCP/IP connection
box is checked and the properties tell me that things are functioning
properly. But having checked with other users of working cards, this
response is standard.
So is this more likely to be a MM problem or a connection issue? And how to
proceed?
I have found reference to a utililty
(http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/5/lev3/60/pid/581/qid/346979)
that restores registry keys that may have become corrupted, but am hesitant
to use this until I know for sure that this is the source of the problem
(although there is a backup function).
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
Susan

- Windows XP Support >> Network connection Windows Adv 2000 server and wkstn using xp homeI teach a computer lab in an elementary school. We have a server with
Windows Advanced Server 2000. Our workstations are XP Home edition (don't
ask me why). I have set up two different users in the lab, both with admin
permissions. My question is on one user account at a workstation, I can
access our server without having to go through a login/password window. On
the same workstation, under the other user account it asks me to give a login
and password before connecting to the server. I am no expert with the server
(nor the workstations for that matter). There are several folders on the
server which are shared that I cannot see. I am baffled. Thanks in advance
for the help.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> anyone having problems when using VBR MP3s?I have WMM 2.1.4026.0
Seems like every time I render a video file that I used a VBR MP3 in there
is "dead air" at the end of the video file. I am mainly making simple videos
for youtube, they consist of an Image and the song, nothing fancy. I keep
having to re-encode my VBR MP3s to CBR to get an accurate mp3 "length" in
WMM. For example the song is 4 minutes, but for some reason when imported
into WMM it thinks it's 6 minutes and I end up with "dead air" at the end of
the rendered file.
I tried searching the net and surprisingly no one else has this problem.
My passport email has a dead email address but I will keep checking back on
this forum. If anyone knows what's wrong I'd appreciate an email at:

- Windows XP Network >> Remote DesktopThis message is address to Mr. Al Sooner.
I read your response regarding remote desktop where the remote PC is behind
a router. Could elaborate more when you say forward TCP Port 3389 through the
router tot the LAN IP of the PC. What screen on the initiating workstation
can you find the TCP3389 and forward it throught it. Secondly, when you say
call the IP address of the router will be the same as the gateway IP address
on the PC connected to the router.
I appreciate your time in getting more into details.
Thanks,
Mike

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> iTunes with MM2I want to use the pay for, one-off purchase idea of iTunes, but heard the files need to be converted somehow to be used with MM2. Can someone please give me specific instructions on how to do this
I want to simply add a few songs to my movies, but don't know how to obtain the files that work without signing up for some subscription service deal.
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> more defrag questions...A little while ago I defragged my drive d: where XP Pro lives.
It's swapfile lives on a different drive, as does tmp temp and IE6's TIF
directory, and OE6's message store directory.
Just out of interest I rebooted and ran defrag and it did it all over again,
instead of just whistling through and saying "done," like would have
happened in W98. It seems that XP's defragger.exe is always unhappy with
what is just did !
Also, my system managed swapfile on g: is about 786 mb's in size, I could
have sworn that a week or so ago I set a 2-60mb swapfile on d: ,"...for
emergencies..." that JE mentions on his site, because I felt like fiddling
with something.
While I was having a look around, tonight, the d:\pagefile.sys was gone. So
I set it again, looked in the root directory of d: and there was
pagefile.sys ....2048kb in size. I rebooted, and checked - again it's
gone. So, is XP Pro deleting the 2-60mb swapfile in d: because it doesn't
need it, or is something wrong?
Also there's a 523,812 byte sized hiberfil.sys in the root dir. of d: that
I'm sure wasn't there before. Is hiberfil.sys supposed to be there? (The
file icon for it, in Windows explorer is very faint and the hidden flag
won't clear, so the system flag must be set well.)

- Windows XP Setup >> OEM Pre-activation questionsIs it possible to preserve OEM pre-activation for XP Home?
In what situations can OEM preactivation be preserved, in general?
eg. do I need a special CD (OEM/retail) or do I just need the motherboard to

Does it work will all Dell, HP, Acer machines? or only some OEMs?
