- Windows XP Setup >> Changing a user nameI had Windows XP installed on a new machine. The supplier entered my name as "Micahel" as the Administrator. So in the Documents and Settings folder I have "All Users" - "Default Users" and "Micahel". If I try to change "Micahel" to "Michael" I get the message "Micahel is a Windows system folder & is required for Windows to run properly. It can't be renamed or moved"
I can change my name in the User Accounts through Control Panel but Micahel remains in the Explorer page.
Any way it can be changed?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Can't install Windows XPHi,
I am trying to install Windows XP on my machine running Windows 2000. I
wanted the computer to boot from CD ROM as I wanted to install it this way
so I could wipe the current partition. Unfortunateley the BIOS wouldnt let
me alter the boot settings - all drives were stuck on auto??? So I tried
running the Windows XP setup CD from Windows 2000 and the pc rebooted but
when I selected the option to install Windows XP I was informed that I was
missing hal.dll. So i can get back into Windows 2000 but I can't run the
Windows XP CD when I restart. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> which format is best for saving for DVDHello
I have tried a few different save settings that I thought would be high
resolution when saving so that I can then burn to DVD, but they all seem to
be too "pixely".
Can anyone please suggest the best setting to use to save my movies so that
I can then burn them to DVD and have them looking nice and clear like the
original project file?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP Home, Setup failure, Error MessageI have a lot of crashes and application freezes, which occasionally free
themselves, but more often not. I decided to renew my Setup, hoping to find a
Repair facility on my legal Windows XP / SP2 Upgrade (from Windows 98) CD.
Each time I get into "copying installation files" the setup stops and I get
this message, for which I cannot find an explanation, or a cure, anywhere!
Quote -
"Windows Setup"
Setup was unable to read from or write to Drive C. If a virus scanner is
running, disable it and restart Setup."
End quote.
During this process I don't have any virus scanner or other programs
running. Virus-wise, my computer is "clean".
Can anyone help me get around this, please, and how do I activate a "Repair"?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> Microsoft XML Parser Setup Wizard ended prematurelyI'm trying to run the msxml3.msi on my machine and it gives me an error of
"Microsoft XML Parser Setup Wizard ended prematurely" every time I try to run
it. I have administrative privilages on the pc. I need to install this so
that I can finish installing Symantecs SAVCE 10 client on this machine. In a
help document it says that I need "msxlmx.inf" in the folder
"<drive>:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\SFPCA Cache\" and it is
not there. That is why I need to run the msxml3.msi.

under the processes tab to see what was running all the

- Windows XP Support >> Briefcase - replacement software or app somewhere?I have been using the Briefcase function for about 2 years now. It has the
type of functionality I need.
The problem is that the sowftare is so unstable and non-user friendly and
then sometimes a really unattractive problem pops up which waste all the time
that the function used to save.
Does anyone know a replacement app that I can buy which is more robust?
thx
fyi: I have had not many problems with Briefcase in the last 2 years - but
when it happens it is just maddening.
The latest one is - and why this started I don't know - any file name with
an Umlaut (the two dots above a letter) - are considered changed on both
computers. Since 2 years this was never an issue. Now it tells me that about
200 files are not going to synchronise becos Briefcase considers them changed
on both computers. It makes me want to throw things around the room. But I
will stay calm and feel better once someone has a replacement.

- Windows XP >> sloooooow computerI have a Durand processor running win xp. I am hooked to the internet by a
hub in my building, (DSL I think). There are 2 other computers hooked into
the same hub and they are running fine. My problem is the computer at my
desk, for some reason it reboots several times before actually letting me on
and then to wait for something to open, be it a program or the internet, I am
taking a nap it is so slow. I have defragged, disk checked, ran numerous
virus scans, and even bought a registry clean up tool and ran that. Nothing
seems to work to get this computer working like it should. It originally ran
great. Any suggestions as to how to go about fixing this problem? It is
really frustrating. Would installing more memory help?? Not really sure how
much I have now but I can't think of anything else to do.

and aluminum keys and shell, and light weight. I don't care about massive amounts
of 'feature buttons' or dynamic looks or natural style for typing, something well
built that will last. Any company known for such a product?

- Windows XP >> Chkdsk/r/f after installing the latest patchesWhen I ran chkdsk /f/r after installing the latest pathces, it gave me BSoD

I tried on other computers in my office.
Especially computer that are not in used, so they haven't been updated yet

It's working ok.
Then I updated them with the latest Microsoft pathces.
And the result is the same errror.
You may want to test chkdsk /f/r to see whether you got this problem.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> What the... serious explorer bug???Allright, I think this is new, I wonder if somebody else can confirm
this:
If you attempt to start an executable that was downloaded from the web,
by double-clicking in Windows Explorer, Explorer displays a warning
dialog. So far, so good...
Now, while that dialog is open, try to click on the explorer window,
and watch what happens. I tried this on four different machines (all
different hardware and configuration), and in each of those cases, the
dialog starts flickering wildly, depending on the sound card I hear a
series of bloops, or some wild screeching, and winlogon starts chewing
up some serious CPU time. At least on a fast machine, this stops after
a while, but on an old P3 I tested it on, this might ultimately end in
a system crash.
I went back and tried this on a near-virgin install of XP SP2, fully
patched, and the same thing happened. Any comments anybody?

- Windows XP Support >> Why is "Combine" not possible in MovieMaker ?Ok, I loaded a wmv movie into MovieMaker and put the marker (=blue vertical line in the timeline)
somewhere in the mid of the movie. Then I did a first "split" and just a second one afterwards on
another position with success.
Now I have 3 independent parts. I marked the middle part and deleted successfully.
Finally I wanted to paste the remaining two parts. For that I hold down the CTRL key and selected
with mouse clicks at first the left then the right part.
When I go now to the "clip" menu in order to make a "Combine" operation it is NOT possible.
The menu entry "Combine" is greyed out/disabled.
Why ?
The same occurs if I press the SHIFT key instead of the CTRL key

I've a Windows XP Home Edition PC with following specs.
-Dell 2GHZ CPU

-80GB HDD on 1st controller
-NEC DV_5800 DVD-ROM on 2nd separate controller as master

Normally, I was copying a large 7GB data from my NEC dvd-

it is taking twice as long at 56 Minutes completion.
Something has slowdown my bootup time and I/O speed

I need help to speedup my I/O transfer speed between my

Please send me your recommendations to my e-mail and

- Windows XP Setup >> Because of the Network Card: Dell Poweredge400SC cannot standby?Hi all,
My dell poweredge 400sc is using Intel Pro 1000MT Network card.
I amusing Windows XP Pro.
Here is my sad story. Is there a way that I can avoid changing my NIC card
to fix the problem?
-----------------
I feel this is annoying. After being sent to standby and the fan rest for 2
seconds, the Poweredge400sc automatically restart(reboot to logon screen):
everything else is
working, only the monitor was shutdown.
By moving the mouse a little bit or hit a key on the keyboard, the monitor
can be turned on, and it shows a log-on-enter-user-password screen...
That's on!
It only sleeps for 2 seconds then everything was back on: fan, CPU,
harddisk, etc.
What is the problem?
FYI, I have done the following debugging:
1. I downloaded a dumppro.exe, and did in command line:
dumppro admin minsleep=s3
2. I downloaded ATI Rage XL new drivers, so it does not prevent me from
going standby now...
3. I updated the Flash BIOS to version A09, I think it is the newest...
4. I set the NIC to be allowing remote wake-up on LAN.
5. I set in the BIOS the suspend mode to be S3, and the low power mode to be
off(so I can remotely wake it up on LAN from hibernation or off, but that's
another issue. I now want standby first,... sleep first, wakeup that's a
later issue...)
6. I set in the BIOS WAKE-UP-REMOTELY to be ON.
That's all I've tried...
Still not able to go standby fully...
What's wrong?
I began my plug and unplug experiemnts.
And finally pinpointed out that when the LAN cable is connected,
it is always woken up after 2 seconds;
when the LAN cable is off,
it is OK with no problem.
So now the problem is the LAN adaptor card...
"Disconnecting" LAN is not a good choice because I rely on being able to do
Wake-UP-on-Lan
later on remotely...
Where does this mysterious wake-up signal come from?

- Windows XP Network >> Internet Connection ProblemI am having a problem using a completely setup and active
internet connection because my system defauts to a dial-up
connection that I used to use and deleted awhile back.
The dial-up was to MSN, but was deleted a few months ago.
The problem just popped up when I tried to install a
temporary dial-up connection (FYI, my Intenrt connection
options are set to 'never dial a connection.' Now that I
have my broadband back and set it up and made it active I
can't access the internet (or mail).
Please let me know if you have any ideas or know what
registry settings I'd need to edit. Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Distorted jpeg images after Firefox installYesterday, I signed onto my PC and found all of my jpeg images on websites
are distorted. I also found an install of Firefox on my desktop. This was

I ended up completely reformattting my hard drive and still have the problem
