- Windows XP >> Phone Dialer uses all XP Pro resources but doesn't launchI am working on a friend's computers (3 total), all
running XP Pro. We have rebuilt the software from
scratch (reformatted hard drives, reloaded operating
system and all applications). The PC in question,
Computer1, is a Pentium III 600Mhz with 256MB ram with
40GB (33GB free). All Windows critical and related
updates (OS and Office) have been installed on all the
computers. When Phone Dialer is launched and the manager
comes up, no problem. But once you enter the phone
number and ask it to dial, Task Manager shows it grabs
every available cpu resource and does not launch for over
four minutes. I have compared it to the computer next to
it, Computer2, that is set up basically identicle (it is
a 933 Mhz with 512 MB ram). When Computer2 runs dialer,
it works just as it should, launches immediately and
dials the listed number. I have tried updating the modem
driver to see if this was somehow affecting the dialer
operation. I have the XP faxing capability loaded on
both PC's and it works fine on both, so I know the modem
is working properly. Looking at all of the processes
loaded in Task Manager, they are virtually identicle,
with type32.exe (Intellitype keyboard), wuauclt.exe
(windows update client) running on Computer2 but not on
Computer1 as the only differences. I have run out of
ideas of where to look for a solution and using Google
searches have not come across anyone with a similar
problem. Does anyone have an idea where I go from here?
ANY AND ALL ASSISTANCE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

- Windows XP Support >> Stop error 0x0000007eI now cannot get into windows xp x64 due to this flippen stop error.
It is all I get, no device name, driver, etc listed. Just the stop
error (and some other hex numbers in paren's).
Now, I got this after running a series of utilities ie: regclean,
defrag, and then sfc /scannow. The last time I got the above I came
across a site that suggested I go into the registry and change
something in the BOOT section of the registry that had to do with
diskcheck? A search of the registry doesn't produce a hit on diskcheck
(nor on checkdisk). What I do remember was that by changing the value
of whatever it was called to 0, I didn't get anymore stop errors at
boot. Something about the system trying to write to something but
loading faster than that can happen.....
AMD 64 2gHz processor
Any suggestions?
TIA,

- Windows XP >> Can't Delete 'Notification Area', IconHello,
RE: WIN XP, All XP Updates.
The program is VCom Utilities. What a nerve! I don't have many options,
obviously.
I looked it up in the individual files in C:\ Program Files and there
are two such icons...among the many; one is the EXE file, the orher
reads "MXTASK" I didn't want to delete the exe. icon, and it would
not allow me to delete the mxtask icon.
Is there anything I can do to NOT have to deal with that irritating
Icon?
Thanks,
Mike

Windows XP Update >> Windows Update Loads automatically
Everytime I log onto the internet my home page goes straight to the "windows
update" page. I have checked my settings and my homepage is still set to what
it usually is.
The "Windows Update" page used to come up automatically every so often (when
I needed an update) but now it is everytime. When I follow the directions it
says I don't need any updates.
How do I stop it? Would appreciate any help.

Andrew,
Open Internet Options in the Control Panel with IE CLOSED. Under Home
page, is your selected Home page listed ? If so, click the Use Current
button, then click Apply.
Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button and put a
check in the box next to " Delete all offline content ". Click OK.
Now click the Clear History button.
Restart the system. Did that resolve the issue ?
If not, please see :
Home page setting changes unexpectedly, or you cannot change your home
page setting

- Windows XP >> Operating system not found....and found againHello,
I ve got this strange problem with my Advent Laptop running windows xp
sp2.
When I start it, "operating system not found "
Then I put the Recovery CD in and ive got the message. Recovery cannot
be continued, hard disk not found.
I switch off the computer and start again...same error....
I do this some times up to 10 times, and like by magic, the option"
press R for recovery appears.
The recovery options are there: i tried the 3 of them: system restore,
quick format, complete format.
But still have the same problem.
Now, I don t even bother to choose an option for the recovery.
I start my computer about 10 times until i have the option R Recovery,
and I quit to cancel the recovery, and the Windows XP start and let me
use my computer perfectly.
I can restart the computer from XP, and no problem.
Now if I switch off from XP, and try to switch one after a few
minutes... yet again, the same problem come back.
Sorry for the lenghty description, but I think necessary as I don t
find the same problem on any groups or website.
Thanks
J.

- Windows XP >> Advice on photo filesSeeking advice on emailing photo files in Windows XP Home (using OE 6.0). I
use a Kodak digital camera and create jpeg files which are very large. When
I email the files as attachments, it takes forever to send (via my 56K
modem) and for the recipients to receive.
Is there a way in XP to compress these files or somehow speed up the process
both on sending and receiving photo files? Is there software that can
handle this task?
I realize that this question may be a bit "off-topic" for this group, but
suspect that one of the gurus would know the answer.
Thanks in advance for any advice and/or tips.

- Windows XP Update >> matrix for Windows security updatesIs there a matrix of all the Windows updates since the start of the

It looks that the first security update is

I guess that there have been about 526 security updates since the

What I would like to so create a Excel spreadsheet of the various

and date of update, KB article, MS #.
Is this information available on http://www.microsoft.com?

- Windows XP Support >> WMI ActiveX objectsHi All,
I am planning to use WMI ActiveX objects in my web application.
I have written an wrapper ActiveX object which internally uses WMI objects.
I have written the wrapper activeX object in order to sign the wrapper object
as well as the internally used WMI object.
I would appreciate if anyone of you can throw some light on following 1.
Legeally is my approach correct.
2. Can I write my own wrapper activeX object around WMI object to digitally
sign both?
3. Are there any copyright / royalty issues involved in this approach?
Thanks in Advance

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> WindowsXP nt backupI would like to back up selected files AUTOMATICALLY from
my C: drive to a second hard drive installed for this
specific purpose utilizing MicrosoftXP's "nt backup," but
am experiencing difficulty with the setup.
The two internal hard drives and my one external hard
drive are not recognized by nt backup as backup devices
and I am not given the "File" option, ala "BackUp My PC."
My reading of what documentation I have found and these
forums suggest I can indeed do this, so would somebody
explain to me "how"?
Referencing any and all Microsoft KB's [for that matter,
ANY reference material] as well as guidance from somebody
who has actually done it would be most appreciated.
Thank-you.
Ron
P.S. I apologize for posting to multiple forums, but the
subject is referenced at no less than seven [7] sites...
