- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows Explorer QuitsWhen I right-click on any BMP file listed in Windows
Explorer, it quits with an error. I can open BMP files in
my BMP editor by double-clicking from WE, it's just right-
clicking that causes the problem. Right-clicking on a JPG
file (for example) works fine and double-clicking opens it
up in the same graphic editor as the BMP files. Any ideas?

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update KB896424 - Breaks IE Security Zones!!!!http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=896424
I had a weird problem this morning. I have been working on an IE
application, and this application opens windows (using window.open())
without a status bar, but this morning these windows opened with status
bars.
After a bit of testing and head scratching, I realised that my intranet
based website was being shown as in the Internet zone according to the
status bar.
Off to Tools, Options, Security, Local Intranet, Sites, Advanced I go,
and my list is empty.
Humm, the security update wiped all my zones (I thought). So I added
my intranet URL back, OK'd everything... but the browser still shows it
as in the internet zone. So I go back into the sites dialog, and the
URL I had added is not there. I try and add it again, but I get a
message saying it is already in another zone.
As I knew there had been a windows update last night, I went to
add-remove programs and removed update KB896424, rebooted.
I can now add URL's back into my Local Intranet zone, and my
application is now working again. The *ONLY* thing I did to get this
working again is uninstall this update and it only started happend
after this update arrived, so it is almost certainly the culprit.
It auto-updated again over the weekend, and it broke IE in exactly the
same way. Uninstalling the update again fixes the problem.
How can I stop this update from installing? I have for now disabled
automatic installs.

autologon. Downloaded v2.10 and some problem. check the box, click on apply
and next boot logon window comes up first. I am the only user, and tweakui
shows my account name. I do not have any password set for my account.
I couldn't find anything by searching Google either.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Power Scheme - Turn Off Monitor works intermitentlyHello,
I am running XP Pro. I set the pwer scheme to turn off the monitor after 10
minutes (or any other interval) and it works only intermittently and I have
been unable to determine what causes it to stop working. If I reboot the
computer that sometimes works but even if it works it still stops again
later on.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Update >> Update for Windows XP (KB920872)Last night automatic update applied this new update to my home XP system.
It apparently is supposed to fix a stability issue caused by audio drivers.
Unfortunately after the system was rebooted the system no longer had sound.
The problem was fixed quickly enough by uninstalling the update.
Is there an official place Microsoft provides to report such issues?
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> A Strange Ghost vs. Acronis QuestionI'm a bit uncomfortable posting this in windowsxp.general, but the group has
received similar categories of question in the past and I don't see any more
appopriate group. So apologies if warranted!
I backup my computer daily to a Maxtor external drive using the Retrospect
Express product. It had been working fine for well over a year, but had
suddenly started having software failures, making it unusable. Similar
reports are trickling into the appropriate Retrospect web site's forum, and
there is anecdotal evidence that it has to do with changes introduced to the
Windows environment by the installation of IE 7. That's just background info,
not relevant to the query to follow:
Therefore, I've started using Acronis v. 8 (I realize it's not the latest;
it's what I have) to backup the entire partition to another homebrew external
drive on demand. That's a 7200 RPM Hitachi drive via USB2, of course, and for
what it's worth the machine in question is fairly high-powered - striped Raid,
dual processor, etc, etc. It is taking roughly an hour to back up the
partition at max compression - I'm only using about 25 gigs of my 600 gig
disks. I realize that the max compression is costing me some time.
I just was chatting with a coworker about backup, and he showed me his Western
Digital external drive connected to his Dell laptop (D610) that he uses as his
main machine at work. He has a 40 gig disk which is just about full, so he
actually has more data than my 25 gigs on the home desktop.
He uses Ghost 10 to backup his partition. You should have seen my jaw drop
when he said that he does it automatically every hour, because it only takes
four minutes!
So here is this rather ordinary laptop, far less powerful and fast than my
home desktop, backing up roughly 50% more data via similar USB2 interface in
roughly 1/15th the time that it's taking me.
Both products are well-regarded, I'd opine.
Can anyone pound some sense into my head as to what's going on here. I am
unable to fathom this huge apparent discrepancy in backup times for the two
similar products.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> I have a question on Windows XP boot problemI cannot get into Winddows XP on my "C" drive. I have a
notebook (HP) and the recovery disk wants to format that
darn think. Can I use fdisk and make a partition and
install windows 95 or 98 and use that to recover some data
files. If so do I make that a primary partition. I
believe you can only have one boot partition??? Once I
retrieve the couple of files and a few pictures I will
then format the whole thing using my recovery CD from HP
that came with the notebook.
Thanks for your time,

a couple of potential problems; I don't remember the

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Still durationNow, this is not really a still it is single frame split from an otherwise

- Windows XP Setup >> Xp Home Installation - BSOD or other fatal errorOnce I'm well into the setup of XP Home, I get one of two
errors:
If I install Win98 first, and run setup from CD while in
98, I get this fatal error:
"syssetup.inf layout is missing or corrupted".
Note: there is no syssetup.inf on either the c: drive or
on the installation CD.
If I install XP onto a clean disk, I get a BSOD
New Asus MB + Intel P-4 2.4gHz CPU, 256 or 512 DDR 2700.
I've tried swapping memory (yes, the memory matches Asus'
specs) and video cards
I can install Win 98 successfully.

Windows XP Setup >> reinstalling XP
We have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall XP to
fix a few problems. Our problem with our computer seems
to be running slow and the DVD does not work. The
hardware supplier feels it is a software problem and
clear the computer and reinstall all software.
We are running Windows XP home ed. We have tried going
into safe mode but are unable to find XP to remove in the
Add/remove programs. Then tried safe mode with C: prompt.
Tried as per instructions cd\windows\system32 ..
osunist.exe
This did not work and end up with an error with the
registration. We have activated windows and it is
registered.
We have also tried repair Windows XP etc. Now get error
GetIUMS not located in dynamic library MSDART.DLL
How do we reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows
XP?

1. Set your BIOS so that the PC boots from the CD.
2. Boot from your WinXP CD.
3. Select "Format disk" when prompted.

Windows XP Setup >> reinstalling XP
I am experiencing the exact same problem. I had to try to
do a recover installation after I uninstalled my display
driver on my lap top. I get to "registering components"
portion of the setup routine with 13 mins left and I get
the popup:
unregmp2.exe - Entry Point Not Found
with the text reading:
The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in
the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL.
So any assistance would be appreciated. Naturally tried
to get MS support on it, but if you can't get your product
ID (Can't boot the computer) you out of luck.

laptop, both with Win XP. Computers are connected via Ethernet cables to a

access the Internet OK, but neither appears on the other's network

both machines, even though administrator login is used. Ideas?
TIA!

- Windows XP Security >> trusted root validationIs there any anti-virus or other anti-malware applications out there
that do trusted root validation?
In other words, enumerate the list of trusted root certificates loaded
in any browsers on a host and check them against a known valid list to
ensure all are legit? For computers that are members of an AD domain
with a PKI infrastructure, either accept the trusted root for the AD
domain or (in an enterprise suite), allow the administrator to add to
the list.

- Windows XP Setup >> Unable to send readable messages in Korean or JapaneseQuestion
I just went WGA from Korean Xp Pro to English Xp Pro causing me a number of
headaches, could not get Korean here in the Sates for some reason.
The problem I am having is when I send a message typed either in Japanese or
Korean the people in Japan or Korea cannot read the message. It is all
garbage.
I have install every thing I can find related to East Asian Languages I can
from Microsoft, added a number of fonts from Korean and Japanese sources.
All to no avail, no one can read our emails in Korea or Japan. I am
wondering should I convert over to an OEM version of Xp or Vista. Because
none of the language packs work.
I set my computer for Korean and tried Japanese still the same issue.
Also all my music files will not display Korean or Japanese. I have to
physically go in and edit the files to redisplay the fonts. Still will not
work with most Japanese fonts but will with Korean.
