Windows XP Support >> Need a Key Code I was wondering how I go about purchasing a key code? I have a copy of XP and
want to install it on a non profits (Churches) computer but need to purchase
a key code so I can do it legally. Can someone give me explicit instructions
on how to do this and how much it will cost?

Thank you.

You need a new license, not a key code. The install key represents the
license.

If it's only one system, consider whether the system is *new* and bare or
has an exisiting OS on it. The Retail Upgrade version is considerably
cheaper than the full retail version, and if there is an existing qualifying
OS, even not presently installed, can be used. You can find the Upgrade
version at many stores. Last time I bought these they were about CDN$129
for XP Home Upgrade. XP Pro costs more, but you may not need it.

If you come to the point of five systems or more, contact MS for a VAR near
you and ask about the Volume License program. These are slightly cheaper,
and are generally XP Pro.

Choosing the OS version is important. In addition to having to decide on
features you *do* need, you must consider features you *do not want*. For
example, for one client I chose XP Home because we did not want even the
possibility of some user invoking encryption. Since this is only available
on XP Pro, that pointed us to Home.

One thing you must be very careful of is buying licenses on eBay at low
cost. You have *no* assurance there that you will receive a legal copy
that can be activated, and if you don't get that , you have to pay again for
the real thing.

What is the make and model of this PC? Did it originally come with an
operating system? Is there a Certificate of Authenticity sticker
anywhere on its case?

If yours is a retail version, not an OEM one, you can buy extra
licenses (see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp). But it's
not generally a good deal. The problem is that Microsoft sells
additional licenses at only a small savings over the list price.
You're almost certainly better off just buying a complete second copy
from a discount source.

Windows XP Support >> Need a Key Code everyone has told you about how to obtain a 'key code"
nowhere in your question did you say if that version of XP has been or
presently is installed on another system......and if it is not have you lost
the box that had the "keycode" on it???
If you had this installed on another system but now have it uninstalled you
can use the same "keycode" to install it on the Church's computer ..you just
might need to phone for activation..........unless its an OEM version that
came with your computer..its tied to that system
If you still have it installed and your intention is to uninstall before
installing on the Church system there are programs online that will read the
"keycode" that you
need.............http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml...........unless..see
above
If you wish to use XP and wish to give the Church a version of XP then your
less costly alternative is to buy another copy...OEM or Upgrade version.

good luck.....
