- Windows XP Update >> How do I cancel Windows Update SP2I clicked "yes" when my automatic Windows Updates icon came up showing me
that Windows SP2 was available for download. I have a dial-up connection so
this download is going to take at least 20 "online" hours just to download.
After 3 weeks it is only at 40% and I have since ordered and received the CD
for installing it. My question is How can I CANCEL the download and stop it
from continueing everytime I logon? I have tried clicking on the icon (both
left & right) and cannot get any pop-up menu to appear. Will the download
discontinue if I go ahead and install Windows SP2 update via the CD
installation software? I would appreciate anyones help and expertise in this
matter so I can cancel this download. I is causeing my computer to run slow
when I am online.
Thank You in Advance,

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows only giving half processor speed...Okay... this is random... but, sometimes, Windows XP only runs at half my processor speed... I have an AMD XP 2100+ processor off of a SOYO Dragon Plus KT333 Motherboard..it should run at around 1.73 mHZ and sometimes, it does... other times it only runs at 866... Now, I thought this might be a problem with the clocking speeds, so I went into BIOS and set them manually.. and still, I get this problem... I've tried everything I know how to do.. and I cant figure out why sometimes it works right, and sometimes it doesnt....

- Windows XP >> Cannot delete item from desktopThis is a re-posting. Thanks to those who have already
offerred suggestions.
I had to access some very old DOS based Lotus 1-2-3
files - Release 2.4. I installed my old software and
wanted a shortcut to it on the desktop. Instead of
creating a shortcut, I actually moved the 123.exe file
from its folder to the desktop. When I try to delete
it, I get a message saying: "Cannot delete 123. It is
being used by another person or program. Close any
programs that might be using the file and try again."
Nothing or no one is using the file. The computer is
part of a network at home. But even when this computer is
the only one on, I still can't delete it.
I have tried the following - none of which work:
- booting in safe mode and trying to delete it
- using the add/remove programs option in Control Panel
(it's a DOS based program and doesn't install
itself into Windows and doesn't appear as a program in
Add/Remove programs).
- bringing up the Task Manager to see if there is a
version of it running. There isn't, so there is no task
to end.
- checking that I have Administrator's rights.
Anyone with any ideas?

- Windows XP Setup >> Domain profiles.I'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup to post this, but this is
something I always wished I knew how to do. Scenario:
Small network of 2000/XP workstations. Domain controller is added to
network, computers are added to domain. Domain user accounts are added as
local users/administrators on workstations using "control userpasswords2"
OK, now what I *want* to do, is use an existing profile on the workstation
for when the user logs in to the domain. I've tried copying the profile to
where the computer loads the domain profile from (usually C:\Documents and
Settings\user.DOMAIN) and checking permissions, etc.. no joy...
Is there any easy way to do this? Do any proposed solutions also allow one
to copy a domain profile to a local user profile?
Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Network >> 'Protected Object' query10-Jul-06
'Protected Object' query.
Accidentally went into "My Network Places \ Network Tasks \
View Icon for Networked UPnP devices" - via Explorer.
Popping up at top of list in right pane was
"ADSL Modem/Router IGD". Properties gave the device address as
"http://192.xxx.x.xxx/" (have x'd out the last 3 sets - in
case it's a private thing).
This revelation was fortuitous as I'd been looking for info on
accessing the Router in case a problem ever crops up here.
When dble-clicked object, got "Connect to 192.xxx.x.xxx" User
Name / Password box - for which I don't know the details as
this small home net was set up by some IT man over a year ago.
When clicked "cancel" or "OK" (among others), got message:
Protected Object. This object on the ROM PAGER SERVER is
Protected".
Question: How to access the Router without the rqrd info?
My knowledge on this is marginal at best but having read thru
and downloaded many of the excellent 'networking' solutions at
this forum over many months, in effort to pick up on the issues,
it appears that one of these days I may need to tackle
items like 'DHCP', among others - and I'd like to be ready
for it.
Appreciate any info whatever on subject.

Windows XP Update >> "Updates were unable to be successfully installed"
Bellow is some troubleshooting steps. If at any point you try using Windows
Update and it begins working again there's no need to continue the
troubleshooting steps.
a.. Make sure:
a.. That the account you're running is an administrator account.
b.. That you have the latest Service Pack and Internet Explorer version
available (see
http://www.google.com/search?q=Microsoft+Windows+%25version%25+Service+Pack
and http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx).
b.. Try running Windows Update again, continue if it does not work.
c.. Clear the Temporary Internet Files and History:
1. Open Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet Options, and then
click the General Tab.
2. Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Files.
3. Also under Temporary Internet Files, click Settings, and then click
View Objects.
4. Right-click the Windows Update Class file (may be called
"WUWebControl Class" or something similar), click Remove, and then click Yes
to confirm.
Note: If you cannot find the Update Class file, continue to the next
procedure to remove the Windows Update controls.
5. Start Internet Explorer.
6. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
7. Click the General tab, and then click Delete Files under Temporary
Internet files.
8. Click to clear the Delete all offline content check box, and then
click OK.
9. Click Delete Cookies, and then click OK when you are prompted for
confirmation.
10. Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
11. In the Settings dialog box, click View Objects.
12. Right-click the Windows Update Class file (may be called "WUWebControl
Class" or something similar), click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm.
Note: If you cannot find the Update Class file, continue to the next
procedure to remove the Windows Update controls.
13. Close the Windows Explorer window, and then click OK in the Settings
dialog box.
14. Under History, click Clear History, and then click Yes when you are
prompted for confirmation.
15. In the Internet Options dialog box, click OK.
16. Enable cookies. To do this, follow these steps:
o In Control Panel, double-click the Internet Options icon.
o Click the Privacy tab, and then click Default.
o Click OK.
17. Click Start, click Run, type %temp%, and then click OK.
18. In the Windows Explorer window that appears, delete the contents of this
Temp folder.
Note: Any file that cannot be deleted is probably being used. Make sure that
you have closed all applications that were running. Then, try to delete the
contents of this folder again. If you cannot delete a specific file, delete
all the files that you can delete.
· Try running Windows Update again, continue if it does not work.
· Add Windows Update to the Trusted Sites Zone:
1. From the toolbar in Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet
Options, and then click Security.
2. Click Trusted Sites Zone, and then click Sites.
3. Click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites
in this zone option.
4. In the Add this Web site to the zone: text box, type
http://*.microsoft.com, and then click Add.
5. Click OK.
6. Click Custom Level, and then select Enable for the following items:
o Download signed ActiveX controls.
o Download unsigned ActiveX controls.
o Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe.
o Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins.
o Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting.
7. Click OK, and then click OK again to exit Internet Properties.
· Try running Windows Update again, continue if it does not work.
· Temporarily turn off personal firewalls, download managers, pop-up
blockers, and Web acceleration products:
If you are using one of the following products, temporarily turn off the
product and then try to use the Office Update site:
o Personal firewalls such as Norton Personal Firewall, McAfee Personal
Firewalls, or Zone Labs
o Download managers such as Get Right
o Web accelerators such as Download Accelerator
o Pop-up blockers
Warning: This workaround may make your computer or your network more
vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as
viruses. We do not recommend this workaround but are providing this
information so that you can implement this workaround at your own
discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.
· Try running Windows Update again, continue if it does not work.
· Disable script or proxy settings:
To do this, follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click the Internet Options icon.
2. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
3. Click to clear the Use automatic configuration script check box, and
then click to clear the Use a proxy server check box.
4. Make sure that the Automatically detect settings check box is
selected.
5. Click OK two times to close the Internet Properties dialog box.
· Try running Windows Update again, continue if it does not work.
· Perform a clean boot on your computer, based on your operating
system:
Try to update from the Windows Update site after you start your computer by
using the appropriate clean boot method that is mentioned in the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

· Check to see if the Automatic Updates is enabled:
1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties
2. Select the Automatic Updates tab and make sure that Automatic is
selected, and then click OK.
Note: This does not apply to Windows 98.
· Try running Windows Update again, continue if it does not work.
· Check to see if Automatic Updates is service is running:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type "services.msc" without the quotes and press enter.
3. The Services window should pop-up. Under the name column find
Automatic Updates. If it does not appear there skip over this bullet, if it
is double-click on it.
4. The properties dialog should open up. Make sure it says "Automatic"
in the Startup type box and the Service status says "Started".
Note: This does not apply to Windows 98, ME.
· Try running Windows Update again, continue if it does not work.
· Register the DLL files:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type "command" (or "cmd" on non-98/ME OS) without the quotes and
press enter.
3. Type in the following and press return after each line:
· REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
· REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
· REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\atl.dll
· REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
· REGSVR32 %windir%\system32\wups.dll
· Enter "exit" and press enter.
· Try running Windows Update again, continue if it does not work.
· Troubleshoot network connection issues:
Detection failure may be caused by network connection issues.
If you have a second computer that is connected to the Internet, try using
the other computer to access the Windows Update Web site.
If you cannot use the Windows Update installation process because your
computer is behind a proxy server and the proxy server is preventing the
Windows Update installation process from working correctly, you may have to
contact your network administrator or your Internet service provided (ISP)
to obtain assistance in bypassing or in configuring the proxy server.
· Try running Windows Update again, if Windows Update continues not
to work please attach your WindowsUpdate.log file. To gather your
WindowsUpdate.log file:
1. Select Start, and then click Run.
2. Type "%windir%" and press enter. The WindowsUpdate.log file will be
located in this folder.

Windows XP Update >> "Updates were unable to be successfully installed"
None of these worked for me.
All my downloads have a 0 value (empty) and are unable to install.
So I'm assuming they're on my system somewhere but unable to install
Ideas anyone?

- Windows XP Setup >> XP Home upgrade hangs with less than 1 min to goI have tried 6 times now to install XP Home on my
computer. (Compaq Presario model 168217-003 - everything
USB no legacy mouse or keyboard connects). Everything
goes great until it gets down to 1 minute to
go...uninstalling setup files. At this point the
computer simply hangs. On reboot it starts the entire
install over and then hangs at the same point. What can
I do? Can I go in with a WIN98 boot disk and delete
files manually? (I tried to delete the C;/windows/temp
file and it didn't change anything). I am not sure what
to do. This was to be an upgrade. I cannot even revert
to WINME (at least I don't know how to). I do not want
to wipe the drive and lose all my info. I would
appreciate any help!! Thanks - Jimmy

- Windows XP Support >> Still have same problemI don't know where to start. I was having problems with my 'puter, so I
finally formatted & reloaded all programs. Now I'm noticing recycle bin
empties itself, even when I only have 1 icon in there, everytime I shut down,
and boot back up i see the file sitting there, but when it's finished booting
the item gets sucked away.
The reason that I reformated was because everytime I tried to stream from a
website, (win media player 10) gave me error message "one or more codecs are
missing"
I didn't know why this was happening because I have streamed from this same
website before. It even says on the website to use wmp 10, i tried removing
wmp and reinstalling and still got same error message. After i formatted and
tried streaming that day from same website it worked. Next day tried again
and gave me same message about missing codecs. Now the reycle bin empties
itself???
Can anyone help me? I have win xp home edition.
thanks
I was told to check for a tick in the disk cleanup>empty recycle bin. No I
don't have a tick in there. I assume that would mean you have a virus.
I've also did a virus scan and nothing. Any other suggests as why this is
happening?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Ghost Bootable CD on ASUS mobo...lockupsWe've been using Ghost 7.5 for a long time, it works great for what we
do...which is make simple bootable CDs that install a fresh copy of Win XP

Today we're having our first compatibility problem, with the ASUS P5S800-VM.
The CD boots, but Ghost cannot access the virtual Z: drive where the image
resides. ASUS online tech support is of no value so far, and Norton no
longer supports 7.5.
Any ideas?

Tech support said the reason is that the OnlineBackup cannot read from

Do you have any suggestions?

to help solve the issue raised, thanks so********
Hi
I am having trouble installing a fresh copy of xp with the
boot disk program. every time on either the 2nd or third
disk an error comes up. I have tried different disks etc
but still hte same. It has an error code of 7 or 512.
I have looked in the knowledge base and it says about
error code 7 but the resolution does not work.
The only way i can now install xp is by installing windows
then running an upgrade which surely cant be good.
Any ideas?
The pc is 5oomhz with 512mb RAM so should be iup to the
job but obviously not the most new of models!!

work -- and have been forced to use another browser. I can workaround those
sites that only work well in Internet Explorer simply by using my wife's
computer for them.
However, I am concerned that this will mean I can no longer update Windows
on my computer. As you know, if you go to the windowsupdate site using
another browser, it tells you to use IE. Does anyone know if I can work
around this, perhaps by FTP or something?
Thanks.
