- Windows XP Hardware >> XP pro detects dual processors...I've just built this CPU from scratch which includes an
Intel P4 3.06Ghz CPU w/ Hyper Threading. The system runs
on an 800mhz FSB, with 1536mb of PC3200 DDR RAM. Oddly
enough, the OS and several apps show that it has 2
processors. Is there a reason for this? I'm certain it
won't affect performance, I was just wondering why it
would do that.

- Windows XP Setup >> Repair Install> Lost Documents and SettingsA friend's computer was not booting into Windows, so I ran chkdsk from the
recovery console, restored NTFS.SYS from the CD. (as it was not found on
startup) Windows got to the end of the startup logo, then rebooted. I
resorted to attempting a Repair Install from the CD, not realizing that there
is a potential for data loss in the Documents and Settings directory. I've
done repair installs on my own systems in the past without any problems.
Everything went smoothly until the system booted up, I logged in, and
discovered that all of the important files I was trying to preserve are gone.
Windows recreated all of the users, but everything inside their home
directories is the installation default. The start menu has also been
reverted to the installation default (obviously as it is in the All Users
directory) Has anyone had experience recovering this data in any way? Help!
Thanks,
Reid

the log-in screen. I never set up a password. I tried logging in Safe Mode
and the administrator password is not "blank" as stated in another article.
I get the following error "The system cannot log you on due to the following

- Windows XP Setup >> My documents copied to second hard driveHi,
Last week I found my hard drive quickly failing and I was too dumb to have
backups.
I went out & bought two hard drives. Installed one of the new ones as a
slave and copied everything on my failing C: to the new drive (F:).
I then replaced the failed C: with a new drive and installed windows xp home
on that one. Upgraded to SP2 and all the other updates that were suggested.
When I try to move the F:\my documents folder (this is the copy from the
failed drive) onto my new C: I get a "Can't access. Check if drive write
protected or full" error message. I can't open any of the documents or
pictures either. I can't copy them from the old F:\ my doc folder to any
other place on the F:. Basically I can't do anything with them but I'm not
convinced they're corrupted. I think it has something to do with being in My
docs and the fact that I no longer boot windows from that drive.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Brian

Windows XP Setup >> product id?
I'm on different computer right now. But anyway, I just bought a laptop and Windows XP Home Edition. When I was installing Windows XP, it asked me for the product code thing. I looked all over and couldn't find it. Should I call Windows and tell them? Or is there an unversal code or something?

CD Key? It would be on the CD case or on a sticker on your computer case or
possibly in paperwork that came with the CD you were installing from.

If Windows XP is OEM, the Product Key is most likely on a sticker
attached to the shrink-wrap plastic.
If retail, the Product Key is on an orange sticker on the back of the
CD case.

Windows XP Setup >> product id?
Greetings --
The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." If it was an OEM (factory
installed) license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer
affixed to the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.
To recover a lost Product Key:
If your system still runs, you should be able to use Belarc
Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html to find the
Product Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and
haven't since reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably
of the drive image used at the factory and not _your_ specific Product
Key; therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not
be -- used for a re-installation.)
If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:
How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246
If it was an OEM license, you should contact whomever sold you the
PC; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of the
Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy a
new license.

- Windows XP Security >> Locked-Out Documents?I recently had to reinstall my copy of windows due to a

- Windows XP Setup >> Applications available to all usersHi
I have just installed xp and I am having problems making
programs available to all users.
I have made each member of the family a user of our pc
with the children being limited users.
When I install a program ( I am an administrator) it
doesn't seem to make the program available to the others.
Is there a way I can inform " XP " that I want the
program to be available for all ( or for that fact just
selected users)? I can't seem to find any info on this
part.
Thanks

- Windows XP Basic >> Issues synchronizing time with time serversI've problems getting time synchronizing to work on my computer. I get an
error message "can't connect to time server" on both time.windows.com and

My system is a Windows Media Center, with XP service pack 2. I have a local

I have tried to turn off the gateway's firewall in addition to the Windows

Obviously it would be good to keep my computer on time for the TV guide and
recording features of the Media Center. :-(
Anyone have any clues to what I should try to make this work?

- Windows XP >> Installing XP onto a 64 Bit Turion machineI've just bought a new ACER Travelmate 5520 that shipped with Vista Home.
Unfortunately, I now can't run my older versions of Photoshop, Nero etc.
Being a Scotsman, I'm loathe to spend out on new applications when my old
ones do everything that I want them to. Question is, can I run my old 32 bit
version of XP pro on this machine and should I have the syetem configured to
dual boot or just wipe vista off and install XP?
Any advice please!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Dual Monitors in 'clone' mode using two cardsHi
I'm trying to set up dual monitor cards to allow o/p to a
monitor @ 100Hz refresh and a seperate LCD projector @
85Hz.
I need to duplicate the desktop o/p on both screens. I've
tried Matrox Dualhead technology and that does not allow
different refresh rates on the two outputs despite their
claim that it does (confirmed from Matrox tech support).
I now have two seperate Nvidia GeForce4 MX cards (one AGP
one PCI). But I can only 'extend' the desktop to both
cards, I can't 'duplicate' the desktop to both cards.
Anyone any ideas please. Apart from using a laptop that
has this built in :o)
Using XP Pro

- Windows XP Security >> Open up remote admin ports without GPO?Hello, I have some problems with the GPO for opening up remote admin ports to
clients and since GPO-troubleshooting is rather timeconsuming I intended to
settle for a quick solution and instead use
"netsh firewall set service remoteadmin enable custom 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0
domain"
The problem is that I want to use this in a script and somehow the firewall
context menu disappears as soon as you enter the netsh remote mode.
Is it known why the firewall context mode disappears for remote computers
and is there a way to get around this?
Basically I need a simple way to toggle/show the firewall state for remote
computers without resorting to GPO's or login script so is this possible?
Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Disk DefragmenterI have installed the SP2 update and, so far, can no longer perform a disk
defragmentation.
When I run the program I get an error message stating:
MMC failed to initialize because it was installed incorrectly or because a
portion of the registry has become corrupted. Make sure the file Mmcndmgr.dll
is registered and running "regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\System32\mmcndmgr.dll".
I then go to Run and type:
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\System32\mmcndmgr.dll
And I receive another error message stating:
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmcndmgr.dll" is not an executable file and no
registration helper is re registered for this file type.
The mmcndmgr.dll file does exist in the System32 folder. Can anyone help me
fix this problem and get my Disk Defragmenter to work again? If it's a
registry problem, where in the registry would I fix it and how? Or how would
I go re-installing the program if thats even possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
