- Windows XP Hardware >> Assistance with RAID 1 SetupI am interested in using RAID 1 (Mirroring) on a Windows XP Pro system for
fault redundancy.
I have two identical 120 GB IDE Hard Drives installed on the PC and
connected to the secondary channel of a High Point HPT372 onboard controller.
The controller is functioning properly and the drives are visible from
Windows Explorer and the Drive Mgmt. applet as NTFS Formatted Basic Disks.
Neither of these drives is used for booting, data storage only.
At this point there seems to be two methods of creating a RAID array with
these disks.
The first is to use the Windows Drive Mgmt. applet to create the array. This
appears to require that both drives be converted first to Dynamic disks. When
setup using this method, if I wish to delete the array, it first requires
that each of the volumes be deleted, the drives converted back to basic and
then repartitioned and reformatted, thus removing all data from both drives.
No option to â??break the mirrorâ?? is found in the Drive Mgmt. utility, in spite
of seeing reference to that option in many of the help files.
The second appears to be to use the High Pointâ??s own BIOS to create the
array. This can be done by hitting Ctrl-H on bootup and stepping thru the
process. After creation, neither drive is visible to Windows until the
primary is â??initializedâ?? thru the Drive Mgmt. utility. After doing so, the
primary (only) is visible, still as a basic drive. When deleting the array,
again thru the High Point Utility, and rebooting to Windows, the drives again
have to be reinitialized, repartitioned, and reformatted to be visible again,
which also deletes all of the data.
Where is the benefit of having the redundant collection of data?
Is the benefit only if one drive of the array fails on its own, then
allowing the software to switch over to the second? I donâ??t like that because
there is no way to verify that the data is being properly duped onto the
second drive until you have a failure. Then if it was not configured properly
or something happened along the way, itâ??s too late.
Is there no way to, in effect, retain two automatically created copies of
the data on two separate drives and retain independent access to each?
Donâ??t say, Use MS Backup. I find that equally useless, when the copy of my
data is unreadable and thereby unverifiable unless I go thru a restore
process.
Am I missing something in the process? I would appreciate some advise.
Thanks. Chuck Mueller, ChuckM@optonline.net

- Windows XP >> convert to NTFSSomeone else built the pc and installed xp pro then handed it over to me to
continue the set up. I installed 2 programs, some data files copied from
backup. Internet dialup setup. Many setting have been tweaked. As: services
deactivated, view settings, adm and user groups.
Then I noticed that it is FAT32, not NTFS. I want NTFS. I read help about
converting, and it said that this could be done after the os is installed.
Kinda sounded like directly after, without actually saying that.
1-Can I convert to FTFS now with out messing with everything that I have
already done??
2-if yes, what are these command line convert arguments for??
/V is for Verbose mode, what is that??
/CutArea:filename specifies contiguous file in root dir place holder for
NTFS sys files, what is this??
/NoSecurity specifies the converted files and dirs security settings for
everyone, what is this??
/X forces volume dismount first if needed. All opened handles to volume
would be invalid, what is this??
Note that all these parameters are optional.
thanks much,
Paul

- Windows XP Hardware >> Free program to resize partitionI have a 250GB hard disk (232GB to be accurate) with a 38.16GB partition
containing Windows XP and an empty partition of 194.7 GB. I would like to
install Windows 2000 on the other partition but would also like to increase
the Windows XP's partition to 200GB without losing my data and install
Windows 2000 on the remaining 32 GB. I know of programs like Norton
Partition Magic and Acronis Disk Director but I do not want to pay for the
software for using it only one time. Is there any free program that can be
used and recommended a usable and functional trial would also be fine.

- Windows XP Network >> logon script on NT 4.0Hi.
We have a NT 4.0 domain. I have begun putting Windows XP
on new computers. I have begun to notice that randomly
some XP computers will just not run the logon script OR
map their home drive. Sometimes this just starts
happening after the person has had their new computer for
3-4 weeks. Sometimes rebooting helps. Putting the logon
script in their startup folder does not help. When they
have this problem a set command shows the logon server
correctly, but their user home path is pointing to their
C: drive.
I'm starting to think it may be a CAL issue. Does
Windows XP handle CAL licensing different than previous
operating systems?
Thanks!

You've got one of the Smitfraud variants - or possibly Winfixer. Do all
the preparatory steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware
Then do one of the Smitfraud removal procedures here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Smitfraud_Trojan
If you know for sure that you are getting ads for Winfixer,
Winantivirus, or Win[insert-name-here] then do the Winfixer procedures:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Winfixer
Do all the rest of the general malware cleanup steps after you've done
the more specific procedures.
If the work looks daunting - and there is no shame in admitting this -
take your machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your
local version of BigStoreUSA) and have them do it for you.

Two part reply..
Perform Part 1 then perform Part 2.
If the first two parts don't work, perform the alternate utility.
It is suggested that you execute each tool in Normal Mode then in Safe Mode.
If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to JRE
Version 5.0. There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being exploited.
Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of Sun Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed and Sun Java JRE Version 5.0 Update 6
be installed ASAP.
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Part 1
-----------
Use noahdfear's SmitFraud, SpyAxe, SpyFalcon, et. al., removal tool -- SmitRem.exe
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic43659.html
Part 2
-----------
Download SmitFraud.exe from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/SmitFraud.exe
Execute; SmitFraud.exe { Note: You must accept the default of C:\McAfee }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to enable WGET.EXE to download the needed McAfee related files.
Execute; c:\mcafee\clean.bat
{ or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c:\mcafee }
A final report in HTML format called C:\mcafee\Normal_ScanReport.HTML or
C:\mcafee\Safe_ScanReport.HTML will be generated. At the end of the scan, it will be
displayed in your browser (Opera, FireFox or Internet Explorer). However, if you are using
WinXP, Win2K or Win2003 your system will be left in a state where you will have to manually
shutdown/reboot the PC. On Win9x/ME platforms the report will not be shown in your bowser
but your PC will automatically be shutdown. It is suggested that you move the report out of
c:\mcafee before performing another scan.
It would be best to scan in both Safe Mode and in Normal Mode and save a copy of the HTML
report for each session.
ALTERNATE:
Part 1
-----------
Secured2K's SpyAxe, PSGuard, Smitfraud, Sinnaka and Alemod removal tool.
http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/AntiPuper.exe
http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=65072
Part 2
-----------
S!ri's SmitfraudFix
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Please Copy and Paste the contents of the HTML Log files;
C:\mcafee\Normal_ScanReport.HTML & C:\mcafee\Safe_ScanReport.HTML in your reply.

Two phase answer...
Perform Part 1 then perform Part 2
If the first two parts don't work, perform the alternate utility.
It is suggested that you execute each tool in Normal Mode then in Safe Mode.
Part 1
------------
Download Adware-Virtumundo Removal Tool --
http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/VirtumundoBeGone.exe
Information on the Adware-Virtumundo Removal Tool:
http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=57049
Part 2
------------
Download WinFixerFix.exe from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/WinFixerFix.exe
Execute; WinFixerFix.exe { Note: You must accept the default of C:\McAfee }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to enable WGET.EXE to download the needed McAfee related files.
Execute; c:\mcafee\clean.bat
{ or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c:\mcafee }
ALTERNATE:
--------------
Download Atribune's VUNDOFIX.EXE
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4
Save VUNDOFIX.EXE to "C:\" ( C:\VUNDOFIX.EXE ) and execute it from there.
Please Copy and Paste the contents of the HTML Log files;
C:\mcafee\Normal_ScanReport.HTML & C:\mcafee\Safe_ScanReport.HTML in your reply.
* * * Please report back your results * * *

- Windows XP >> dpvsetup error when running voice setupi found an old article that has the exact problem i'm
having but it just states to turn up the hardware
excelleration for the voice output. I can't go any
higher. Upon reinstalling windows xp pro it fixed the
problem. Then i downloaded all the service packs and
such and not AGAIN i have the same problem. I always get
error code 80004005 after the message. It has disabled
my mic with voice programs and i do not wish to reinstall
xp again because i do not know which update breaks it for
me. I have tried several sound cards but that doesn't
seem to be the problem, cause i get the same error no
matter what i'm using. Any ideas?
Thanks

- Windows XP Setup >> Welcom screen gone...I just reformatted my HD and re-installed XP Pro. In the
process I inadvertently set it up for a domain (because I
had been installing XP at work and that's what I do
there!). But this computer is at home and not on a
network.
Now, I cannot get the welcome screen to come up and it
appears to be because I'm "assigned" to a domain. How do
I undo that?
(The welcome screen is the opening window that shows all
the users with their little icons and you pick which one
to logon.)
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Support >> XP Pro driversI have a sony Mavica dig camera, i can download pictures on my laptop that is
using XP home, but not on tower that is using XP Pro. The camera seems to
start connecting and is given a drive letter, however if I select that drive
I get the message "G:\ is not accessible -- incorect function". When the
camera is connected both XP Pro and XP home list 6 commonn drivers. XP Home
but not XP Pro, list dvmcdb.sys, pwd_2k.sys. XP pro but not XP home lists
InCDPass.sys and InCDRm.sys. Should I copy the drivers used by XP Home over
to the XP Pro?? Or is there a setting in XP Pro I need to change?? The
install software for the dig camera is incompatable with XP so the downloaded
drivers came from microsoft.

- Windows XP Basic >> phantom emailsHi,
Can someone please explain to me exactly how to stop my log on screen from
telling me I have 1 unread email? I most definitely do not have ANY unread
emails in ANY folder. I realise I could just learn to live with it, but it's
very irritating!
Thanks and much appreciated.

- Windows XP Update >> WindowsXP fails to start after Automatic UpdateIn the afternoon of 2006-04-13 the download manager installed new updates. I
delayed the restart until evening, whereafter WindowsXP failed to start (both
"services.exe" and "lsass.exe" with "Application Error: The application
failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).").
When looking at WindowsUpdate.log it seems as the following updates were
downloaded: KB911565, KB912812, KB890830, KB911562, and KB908531.
Is there any way to either
- undo/uninstall the updates or
- fix the problem
from within the console after booting with the setup CD and choosing the
repair option?
Kind regards

- Windows XP >> Windows startup problemHi Guys,
I'll get straight into it:
System - Athlon AMD64, Windows XP, service pack 2
Background:
I was away at work one day when my dad recently installed a new DVD burner
on my PC. After installation he was having problems with burning DVDs so he
jumped on the net and downloaded a trial version of Nero 8 and installed it
as he believed our version of Nero (v6) wasn't compatible. The computer was
still working fine at this stage. I don't know which site he used to download
Nero 8 and he doesn't remember either. But after he installed it i noticed
that my PC was running slowly. I remarked on that and was concerned that he
may have downloaded a corrupted / compromised version of Nero 8. I ran AVG
Anti-virus scan which turned up some results which were cleaned up fine. I
then installed a new version of SpyBot and also a new version of Ad-Aware
2007 (both downloaded from www.cnet.com). During the setup of SpyBot it asked
me if i wanted to create a new system backup. I said yes. During the
installation of Ad-Aware it asked me to make an edit to my registry which i
declined. I installed and ran Spybot with no problems and it cleaned up any
issues i had. I then tried to run Ad-Aware which kept stalling when it came
time to check cookies. I thought it may have been because i hadn't rebooted
since installation so i rebooted. Upon reboot i was again asked to make an
edit to my system registry. This time i clicked Ok. Things were still working
fine on my PC at this stage though Ad-Aware was still freezing mid-scan. I
searched for a solution on the web and found some users on a forum who
recommended going to settings and turning off the option to scan for cookies
and MRUs. I did that and started scanning and things appeared to be running
fine.
Problem:
A little while after that i got an error message that a file in MSN
Messenger was corrupted and that i should run chkdsk. I also got the same
error message from iTunes. I decided to reboot rather than run chkdsk as i
thought this might solve the problem. I rebooted but found myself at a screen
after startup saying my PC had experienced problems and Windows had not been
shutdown properly etc and gave me a variety of options for loading my OS:
safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last
known good configuration, start windows normally. I've tried every single one
of those options and each time my PC keeps rebooting never even reaching
Windows. I searched for a solution on the web and found someone suggesting
that i hit F8 during startup and choose from the various options there. I've
tried that and tried every option available and it still keeps rebooting.
This is extremely frustrating and i'm at my wit's end trying to fix it
particularly as i have several important professional and personal documents
on that PC which are not backed-up -- many of them with sentimental
importance.
I'd really appreciate any help i can get.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Duplicate USB Floppy Drive LetterI recently purchased a Imation USB 3.5 Floppy Drive.
After rebooting, Win XP assignes a duplicate Drive
letter "A". If you use the Win XP Icon to remove
hardware, when you plug the drive back in, it either
fixes the problem or creates a driver letter "B".

- Windows XP >> UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUMEHad a power failure yesterday and when I rebooted I got the "sorry you
have a problem" screen followed by the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME screen.
I could not go anywhere!
I called DELL tech support and did the following which resolved the
problem:
1) Installed Windows XP istallation disk into cd drive
2) Started computer and pressed F12 during startup
3) Select option #4 IDE.... followed imediately by hitting any key
4)Push key "R" at next command
5) At "C" prompt Type: CHKDSK /R (space between K and front
slash)
6) This test/repair take approx 45 minutes
7) upon completion, type "exit"
My computer rebooted and all was repaired, no files/data lost.
