- Windows XP Network >> XP networking problem - "could not open http://......"I have 1 PC and 2 laptops networked at home using a wireless network. All are
running XP SP2.
My files are all stored on PC and Laptop 1 can see and share these files ok.
Laptop 2 can see shared c:drive but when opening files , always get the error
"Could not open http://(PCname)/c/(filename)" and then the file opens in the
application. When trying to save back to the PC , i can't.
I can create new files on the PC c drive from my laptop, and I can open and
save non Microsoft files e.g Adobe.
I thought it might be my security settings so I temporarily turned these all
off - no joy.
I get the same error if I browse to the file in Windows explorer and use the
"open with" command as I do if I open directly in the application.
Is there a setting which needs to be changed ?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Problem with Check DiskHi
Iam using Windows XP operating system. The operating
System is updated with windows XP service pack (Feb 2004).
The problem Iam having is when I give my drive C: for
a "Check Disk operation" (ie the disk consistency
check). It starts "verifying files and folders" operation.
But when it comes at 69% of completion it shows following
error message
"Error in reading folder (null) "
and abruptly terminates the operation, continues with
starting up Windows.
Iam only using the tools that comes with the operating
system itself . My Os is loaded in Drive C.
I have also run the scandisk.exe from a Windows 98
bootable CD.Although it has found one error and fixed it
but still it doesnt practically make any difference.
Because of this persistance problem the check disk utility
get activated everytime when I start up windows.
It will be nice if someone can tell me the possible
solution.
Thanking You

Every time I start up my PC, the speaker setting is set to

- Windows XP Support >> I accidentally renamed my CD-ROM drives...I recently purchased one of those Sandisk multicard readers, and I wanted to
name the new drive letters based on the type of card the drive accepted. In
the process, I accidentally re-named my CD-Rom drives. I think at the time,
there was media in the drive, which allowed me to do the rename. Since then,
though, with the media removed, it kept the name. Also, Disk Management
doesn't seem to give a way to rename CD-ROMS, so I am stuck. How do I get
the drive names to go back to their default?

- Windows XP >> Mouse Icon ProblemHello Everybody,
First, I checked out the archives but could find nothing on this particular
problem; thus, I would be grateful for any help on the following problem:
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I reinstalled a Kensington Wireless
Mouse with accompanying USB receiver. When I moved the receiver to another
port, the mouse icon (please excuse the lack of specific terminology) then
added the following icons < <> > (which are solid black). I have a pencil in
hand icon. Directly underneath it is this black triangle pointing right, a
black diamond, and then a black triangle pointing right. I uninstalled the
kensington drivers and the problem still remains when using the Synaptic
labtop mouse or the Toshiba wired notebook mouse. I 've gone to the Control
panel, mouse pointer tab and even the Device Manager. The mouse works fine
as far as movement, but I can't figure out how to get rid of the additional
icon that moves with the hand. Does anyone know what I might have done
wrong/accidently and how I can correct it. Bonus question: What purpose
does this attached icon serves? Again, thank you for any help you might have

- Windows XP Support >> task manager - Number of processesI am not even sure where to start with this.
1. When I press ctrl-alt-delete, all at the same time I get a view of TASK
MANAGER.
2. Currently I have 47 processes running.
I am not sure what these are, what they are doing and if they are all
necessary. I am sure they are using resources that could be used elsewhere.
Where is a good place to start learning about these, which ones are
necessary, which ones are not necessary and how to stop the ones I don't
need to have running?
Thanks

Try pressing Ctrl + Plus on the numeric keypad. This autosizes columns =
in case it is zero width. Youi can't turn image name off.

- Windows XP Setup >> Adding audio cardA year or so ago I put an audio card on my son's computer, that had the
audio and video on the motherboard when we bought it. I had a
relatively major crash that was related to corrupted files in the boot
record, and I had to do a full recovery, reformatting the disk. I can't
find the driver disks for the audio card, but found some on the internet
and installed them. I recall when I first installed the audio card I
had to disable the built in audio to make it work, but I can't recall
how it was done. Any suggestions?

- Windows XP >> XP wants to burn all of my music files to CDHey y'all,
I just re-installed XP Pro and upgraded to WMP 11 (from 9).
When I boot up the PC I get a little yellow dialog box stating that I have
files waiting to be burned to CD. When I click on the dialog box, it opens
a window that has all of the folders from 'My Music' showing.
How do I tell it that I don't want to burn all of these files to CD?
I tried deleting one to see what would happen and it disappeared from 'My
Music'. I don't want to delete all of my music. lol
Any ideas?
TIA,
Mike W.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Dualview/Multiple monitorsHi
Ive got a laptop that uses dualview to allow me to attach
another monitor and see exactly the same thing on my LCD

Problem is I want to use powerpoint to show the slideshow

gather that this is the Primary/secondary monitor

Can I disable the dualview or is there a workaround.

- Windows XP >> "No Network Places"We have several Win XP Pro machines on a small office
network. On a few of them (and the list seems to change
from time to time), if you browse to My Network Places in
Windows Explorer then nothing shows up at all. No
shortcuts, no folders, no "Entire Network" icon, nothing.
Refreshes do no good.
The network is out there; file and printer sharing work
fine to and from the afflicted workstations. You simply
can't browse to anywhere through My Network Places.
On some of the other XP Pro systems, network shortcuts
show up, but you have to hit Refresh once to get "Entire
Network" to appear. After that single Refresh, browsing
the network works normally.
Sound familiar to anyone?
