- Windows XP Network >> "All Programs" Button On Start Menu Not Coming UpReally brief I have already searched the boards tried running "regsvr32 /i
shell32.dll" and I am extremely reluctant to edit my resgistry as I do not
think is the issue you anyway.
I have a laptop running Win Xp Pro. I log onto a domain at work which
automates runnning a script to update links that are only relevant to the
network. (It is our custom accounting software). Basically the programmer is
sparatically updating and this script allows for us to be sure all the
clients are running on the most current build. Anyway, on all my other
clients (about 20 machines) when the network is disconnected at logon the
script simply does not run but the All Programs button is still functional.
The links for the accounting software are dead as the target points to a
network link but the Programs button still work.
Now, the problem is when my computer is disconnected from the network (like
at home) i log in under the domain anyway because all of my files and
programs are here. Unfortunately now when I click on "Start" and then "All
Programs" the computer just hangs for about ten seconds and nothing happens.
A few other tidbits before i throw this out to all you experts.
If i hibernate the system (which i often do) before i leave work and then
start it bak up at home there is no issue. Obviously this is because I am not
logging in the unit is just bring me back to where i was. This only occurs
when i shut down and restart off network. I assumed in the past that my
computer is trying to run the script and it is not finding what it needs
therefore jsut locks out hte All Programs menu. The programmer assures me
that the script is inherit of logging onto the actuall network, basically the
script does not exist until you log on each and everytime. The programmer has
no idea why this is happening and obviously neither do i.
Also I already went to http://windowsxp.mvps.org/AllPrograms.htm and do not
feel like changing these regedits as none of it corresponded to my screens
and didn't make much sense to me.
I am no expert so any help would be greatly appreciated but please be
specific in what you ask or tell me to do as I do not want to screw up the
computer (as if that needs to be stated right)
THANKS IN ADVACNED TO ANYONE WHOM MAY HELP

- Windows XP Security >> XP SP2 firewall vs Zone AlarmI have Zone Alarm (Free version), and have just downloaded

who not to?

- Windows XP Update >> WUA API Update DownloadContents collection empty for software updatesHello,
Using WUA API in C++, I am trying to retrieve the download location for
each update using the DownloadContents collection property. This works
great for driver updates: they tend to have one UpdateDownloadContent
object, which contains a DownloadUrl property. However, software
updates return an empty DownloadContents collection.
Does anybody know why this might be? Is there another way to retrieve
the update download location?
Thanks so much,
Jill

- customize >> All programs menu items???I tried to get an answer to this over at the "help & support" group but no
answer. Maybe someone can shed some light on this. I'm stumped.
Windows XP as Administrator
I right clicked on "Start" and "open". I then double-click on "programs" and
find that many (over 50%) of the icons are missing. I went to the same file
for all users and find that there are more icons but, still, not all.
What I want to do is setup All Programs more efficiently and this is the way
I've always done it. Is there any way to get the programs to show?
Thanks, Dan

- Windows XP Hardware >> cannot shutdown after resume from standby/hibernateHas anyone had this problem? After I standby or hibernate
(manual or automatic after timer period) and then resume,
I can no longer shut down Windows XP.
I am running SP1, and suspect it MAY be related (had no
problems months ago), but don't want to re-install WinXP
just to find out. I could have done something else to
make it stop working.
I believe the message is "Preparing to shutdown" when
everything hangs. A key note here is that even the mouse
freezes. (I know some problems occur but the mouse can
still be manipulated)
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

- Windows XP Security >> Silly security policy questionHello,
I am new to a mixed workgroup environment running NT 4.0,
Windows 2000 and XP. For some time, we have been running
poledit.exe from NT 4.0 to lock down our desktops that
reside in a public environment. We have been applying
this policy to both NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. For the
first time today, we were trying to apply the policy to
Windows XP and have not had very much luck. I have been
unable to find any definitive documentation that states
when poledit.exe became obsolete. Can I use it on XP or
not?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Windows XP >> Internet Explorer and Firefox crash
2 computer's in our company are having a problem with both IE and
firefox crashing. McAfee Virus scan 8.5i is also having a problem
where the McShield Service (OAS) does not start.
This started happening yesterday at roughly the same time. I have
patched the computers with the MS updates as well as mcafee patch 4.
W2K pro

Anyone have any ideas?

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and

- Windows XP Setup >> Setting up XP Pro as a ServerHi all,
I have an XP Pro Machine (3.0ghz/ 512mb / 40GB 800fsb) .
We currently have a server that acts as a central install for our anti-virus
(sophos). It also collects information from our PABX (using Softlog).
Indexing Program (ISYS).
I also want it to run iis and Mapinfo's new product Exponare.
Can an XP Pro machine act as a server for these programs ?
I know it's a tough question but a general answer from you guys/gals would
help.
cheers,
Adam

- Windows XP Security >> Cannot Access Folder OptionsI am running Win XP Home Edition and I need to access the Folder Options to
make Hidden Folders visible for some admin tasks I need to run.
I first tried to go via Control Panel > Appearance & Themes but the Folder
Options link was not there. I then realised that the Folder Options item was
not displayed in any Folder windows (under Tools menu) either
I then went to the Help and Support Centre . Here a search on "Folder
Options" gave me a direct link to Folder Options - but when I click it I get
the error message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on
this computer. Please contact your system administrator"
Needless to say I am the adminstrator and all of the above is being run from
within the admin-enabled account on this PC
Would really appreciate help on how to regain access to the Folder options
functionality. Thanks in advance

- Windows XP Support >> Big Problems w Outlook Express 6All of a sudden I started having problems with my e-mail. I need help
desperately, but I am not that knowledgeable with computers. I have a lot of
people mad at me...when I send e-mails, everyone gets it hundreds of times.
Also when I send an e-mail it doesn't appear in my sent box it automatically
goes into my outbox. Sometimes I can't receive e-mails, sometimes I can. I
am getting error reports, but I can't read them. I have called my cable
service and they checked everything out and said all my settings are correct.
Why then is this happening? Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

- Windows XP Network >> Missing Network Adapters (device manager)WinXPPro (corp) w/ sp1. No viruses detected. Had to recently go to a dialup. Was using 802.11g off of a broadband connect. After installing latest security patches and upgrades in anticipation of dialup, I installed my modem and loaded drivers. Diag. showed proper workings. could not connect. Modem will dial but never connect. went to Device manager and found no "network adapters" entry. It's completely missing. So I can't add a dialup adapter to properties. How do I install network adapters back to my device manager?

- Windows XP >> Funny NoisesHi,
I'm pretty new to PC stuff, so here goes. I've got
Windows XP Home Edition but since I recently got
broadband internet access I keep getting strange noises
when I use the PC. Its like dinging and zinging noises
you get when people enter or leave a chat room. At first
I thought it might be caused by pop ups from using Kazaa,
however it doesn't matter what programme I'm in, coz I'm
always connected to the net I keep getting these noises.
Anyone able to suggest something or help ion any way. I'd
be most grateful as its driving me maddddddddddd...opps
there goes another zing!!!!!
Thanks

- Windows XP >> can't open control panel or change any settingsI had a virus and something is still messed up after it was supposedly found and removed. When I try to open Control Panel, I get an
error message that says "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your
system administrator."
I AM the administrator and I am using one computer, XP-Pro OS w/sp2, Router between me and the cable modem. I use Ad-Aware and
SpywareBlaster + McAfee AV ver 8.0 w virusscan ver 12.0
Also, if I go thru start menu and click on either "Accessories" from the Programs menu, or click on "Administrative Tools", or just
about anything that would give me control over settings, the menu just instantly closes before I can even see the choices. How can I
get my computer back?
Thanks !!

- Windows XP Support >> HelpPlease HELP....
I am having trouble with my PC. I have a P4 2.6GHZ, 1024MB PC2700, 2 x
80GB H/D's, a 128MB GeForce 5700SE, Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS, running MS XP
Pro,and it keeps coming up with this fault on nearly all the applications
when I close them, below is just two of the programs that give off that
annoying BING.
I have ran WinSpeedUp and a few other reg checkers and they can't find
anything, I also ran ad-aware6.0 and search and destroy and the same result,
nothing can be found. I am now bald having pulled all the rest of my hair
out trying to find the solution to this fault, and the only one I can think
of is formatting my drives and starting from fresh.
Any help would be much appreciated on this subject, and pointers as to
resolve may end up in my offer of marriage to the person who help's the most
Thank you in advance

- Windows XP Network >> WEP? Help!I have a Belkin wireless router that I use to share my
broadband Internet connection. I am not interested in
file or printer sharing. I have two desktops running
Windows 98 that are "wired" into router and those
computers work just fine!
However, I have a Dell laptop with Centrino running
Windows XP. I can share the Internet connection just fine
until I enable WEP. I cannot figure out how to "log on"
with the passphrase or the key. At times it appears that
my passphrase or key is accepted and I get an excellent
signal but I cannot access the Internet. Other times it
pretends I never entered in anything at all and proceeds
to show me the available SSIDs in the area.
Can anybody please help me?
