at work we have a very dynamic environment where we have to replace
PC's everyday, sometimes a PC could have like 40 profiles.. we have to
login to each profile to create it.. them we can copy the old profile
data from the old PC to the new one.. is there a way in which we dont
have to login to each profile?!

- Windows XP >> Searching in Windows XPI want to change the way I search. The help section says
"To change the appearance of Search Companion
Click Start, and then click Search.
Click Change preferences.
Click Change files and folders search behavior.
Click Standard to be able to search for a variety of
things, such as files, folders, and people, from one
location.
The problem is the option "Change preferences" is not
there.
What do I do?

- Windows XP >> Sysyem Restore: The REAL Reason it REPEATEDLY Cannot RestoreNumerous users have complained here about System Restore (SR) repeated
failing with the message:-
"Restoration Incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored to (whatever
point was selected). No changes have been made."
Various reasons for this have been offered here:-
1) Corrupt SR Point - most popular
2) Full SR disk space
3) SR Service not running
4) Improper or interrupted system shut-down - only reason offered by M/Soft KB
5) Norton AV 2006 Auto-protect is on
and a few cures have been proposed:-
1) Turn SR off then on (losing all but 1 SR Point) - most popular
2) Run in Safe Mode
3) Reinstall SR
While most of these reasons would explain the occasional failure of SR, they
do not address the REPEATED FAILURE of SR in this way.
The most likely reason for a repeated failure is that there is another
(non-system) disk drive that contains remnants of a SR points' storage area
(\System Volume Information) including repeats of some of SR controlling
files.
The way to fix this situation is to:-
1) Turn OFF SR on the other non-system drive ONLY
2) Do any or the required SR - this should succeed
3) Turn ON SR on the other non-system drive
4) All subsequent SRs should now succeed
I had been getting this SR failure EVERY time I tried it in the past 9 to 12
months. Altho I did not realise it at the time, I had installed a spare
system disk drive from an old XP Pro PC as a 2nd drive (E:) on my current XP
Home PC during that period. It wasn't until I tried turning off SR on E:
alone and SR started to work reliably again, that I cottoned on to the root
cause :-)

- Windows XP Security >> How do I make files on a second drive private...?I'm new to XP...but I managed to find how to make files and folders on my C: drive private. However, I also have a second hard disk in the computer (D:) and when I try to make selected folders private, it isn't an available option. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can proceed...? have loaded the hebrew support via control program
languages and added hebrew to my list of languages. I
changed the font in Wordperfect to Miriam and all I could
get was little rectangles instead of letters when I typed.

- Windows XP Security >> Logoff/Shutdown QuestionI am having a problem on Windows 2000 and XP Pro when a user selects Restart
the computer will just log the user off. Once logged off the can press
CTRL-ALT-DEL and then select shutdown then restart and it will work. I'm sure
its a registry setting somewhere but can't find it. I talked to people in the
IT dept with me and no one knows of a change we did that would cause this.

If you don' t want to uninstall Iconpackager:
Iconpackager > Menu Tools > Disable "Repair shell icons" > reboot your
computer

- Windows XP >> taskbarwhen I make any changes to the taskbar it always comes
back the same as before when I reboot. In other words I
can't make any permanent changes

I have Windows 2003 Server and the all workstations have installed Windows
XP SP2; I need you help to resolve this error.
NOTE: But I include the account on Domain Admins group, this account don't
show me this error on event viewer, and then I out this account from Domain
Admin group the error show me againt.
Please let know.

- customize >> Folder settings gone haywireI just formatted my harddisk and reinstalling Win XP Pro and SP1. After
painstakingly setting the folder view and folder picture for every folder in
My pictures, I noticed that some folder settings are "cross-contaminated" by
settings from another folder from a different location. I had edited the
registry with the bags8000 registry edit provided for some other queries but
this problem seems to persist.
Furthermore, the settings were totally different when I access the My
Pictures folder through My Computer>My Documents>My Pictures from when I
access the My Pictures folder direct through the Start menu. How is this so?
Does this mean I have to set every individual folder setting for both
pathways?

- Windows XP Support >> Windows 98SE keeps changing proxy.A friend of mine has windows 98SE and it seems to keep changing to Proxy in
Internet Options. She has to go in and uncheck it at least four times a week.

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows XP OEM Re installationOK so i can boot from the Windows XP disk setup, but now... right after
pressing enter for setup; the computer decides to tell me that I have no hard
disks! So i freaked out and rebooted back from the HD to make sure the setup
program was lying, which it was. What is causing this? How can i fix this?

Windows XP Update >> Unable to update from microsoft
I am running XP Professional, Internet Explorer 6.00.2900.2180 xpsp-sp2
........, and Outlook Express 6.0.2900.2180............
When I select on Internet Explorer the option (Tools) Windows Update, I get
the following message:
Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.
To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or
later.
To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer
Downloads website.
Why does IE think I am running an older version, and how do I get an update
if it thinks the version is not correct?
What is even more curious, this error message occurred at every attempt to
run the update check last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
On Wednesday, I was able to (repeatedly) contact the update site, have
checks made for any required patches, and download as applicable.
Come Thursay and today (Friday), and that error message is back, on every
occasion.
Is this a problem with accessing Microsoft?
I have made no changes to firewalls, security options, cookies, link page
blocking etc.....
Any ideas please?

- Windows XP Network >> Need help in seeing my computer on my home networkI have a laptop with XP on it and two desktops with 98 on it. I can see and
browse the two desktops from the XP laptop but I can only see the XP laptop
from the two 98 computers. I can't open up the XP laptop at all. It keeps
asking for a password? This laptop did come from a campany who had upgraded
and were selling the laptops off. Anyone have any idea how to get around

- Windows XP Setup >> actve desktop, view videosI am unable to retrieve any windows from the desktop. I
receive messages that state access denied and the start
menu will only allow 2 functions which are shut down, and
log off. The windows media player will play music and
display visualizations but will not show the actual
video. The real.one player doesn't come up at all
because it it always preceeded by the Acrobat 6.0
window. What is going on with this system. Has it been
infected with a virus or does the system need to be re-
booted. I belive I was told something about "cookies
being enabled"' whatever that means. Help please!

- Windows XP >> image resizer caused a problemI reinstalled XP home and since then i can't change the name of the file without adding the file extention to it. An example would be right clicking on a photo on the net, goto "save as" if i leave the name as it is, it saves it fine (even though there is no file extention shown) if i try to change the name it saves it but when i check the type of file it reads "file type: file" and i can't open it unless i rename it with the .jpg extention or whatever the original was named. also i'm not changing the "save as type" when saving. The problem started after I installed image resizer, I removed image resizer through add/remove programs but I stiil have the same problem, Thank

minutes to load up a Web page. Even if not going through
IE, downloads and browsing are slow, whatever I use. I've
ran adaware to get rid of a lot of junk. but still no

I have tried changing my levels of security from medium to low and high. This hasn't made any difference. The messages still pop. My security setting is currently set on 'low'

- Windows XP Network >> It was the firewallI came to the group several days ago seeking the solution to my networking
problem. Several MVPs (Chuck in particular) responded with great info and
asked me to come back to the group and share any insights I might have had.
So in that spirit, here I am and here is what happened:
I had/have a desktop Win2K machine and a laptop Win2K machine that
shared/share files with no problems at all. Then I bought a new laptop with
XP Home.
When I tried to add it to the network, it could share files with the desktop
but NOT with the laptop. I tried everything and finally gave up.
Meanwhile back at the ranch ... a few days ago ZoneAlarm announced they had
a new update to their firewall, and I decided to install it, on my Win2K
laptop. They recommended a clean install -- that is, resetting everything.
Suddenly, out of the blue, the two laptops started sharing with no problems.
Here's what happened: Since the desktop and laptop were already sharing
flawlessly, I was lulled into thinking all was well with them, and that the
problem must lie with the new laptop. But in reality I had made the settings
of the laptop firewall very specific, to allow traffic only with the
desktop. Whereas I should/could have allowed traffic in a more general way
(e.g. "any computer in your subnet").
It was the laptop firewall that was blocking access to the other laptop. By
pure chance, the desktop firewall was set in a more general way and masked
the problem.
Moral of the story: remember that *all* firewalls in the net might
contribute to the problem when a new computer arrives. Re-check them to make
sure they're not blocking something.

Have Formatted the hard drive and am ready to re-install XP but am unable to
access the external liteon combo SOHC-5232KX drive.
A:\ drive is working fine via an external usb floppy.
Assume I have to add a driver to the Config.sys file but am unsure.
Is this true and if so need to know what command to use.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> How to remove a file that's infected?A file has been identified on my pc as being infected
with a Trojan Horse virus but when I try to locate it, I
can't find it. I only get the warning of the virus being
detected after I start up Internet Explorer and it resets
my home page. File name/location winnt/DNSErr.dll
I have WinXP home and am running Norton Antivirus 2004
but it can't remove the virus.
Any suggestions?

If I use the Raid for Faster Drives, (SATA 150), ans set it as JBOD, is it the

- Windows XP >> delay between IE and OE view of this newsgroup?I had trouble finding my own post in this newsgroup using Internet Explorer,
so I set up this newsgroup in Outlook Express (following the instructions on
the MS community website). However, when I check the headers for this
newsgoup in OE they seem to be about 11 hours behind the ones visible in
Internet Explorer.
Is there some way to get up-to-date messages from the newsgroup in Outlook
Express?

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 series with Windows XP Home (German) and
Service Pack 2 with all the latest updates.
I have a Mustek BearPaw 1200CU scanner and when I try to install the driver
and panel from the CD, it aborts in the middle of the installation.
I go to C:\Windows\TWAIN_32 and see a folder called: S6U12K
When I click on the folder, I get an 'Access Denied' error and I cannot
browse the folder or delete it, even in Safe Mode.
How can I solve it?
