- Windows XP Update >> Got 0x8007043B Error, Regedit Fix Didn't WorkI'm running Win XP Pro, and after SP2 install, I get the
0x800743B error while searching for Windows Updates. I
tried the add WUAUSERV and BITS to SvcHost process via
regedit (though I didn't see any Value Data under the
netsvcs key). That didn't work. I've searched high and
low for another fix, and found only a vbs (Virtual Basic)
script. I'm not going to learn Virtual Basic to fix
something SP2 broke, and I'm not going to sign up for
a .net Passport account to get online help. So what to
do? Wipe the drive and reload XP Pro and hope SP2 doesn't
prevent me from getting Windows Updates ... again? Or
what? Any help out there?

- Windows XP Network >> System hangs when opening shared folders through VPNI've been trying to fix this for such a long time now...
I have two offices, about 90 miles away from eachother. The offices are
connected via 2 netgear FVS114 VPN units.
On one computer, I am successfully able to access the network shares of the
other offices. Browse shared folders, etc etc.
On the other two computers, I can successfully see the initial share window
when I type \\computername.
But when I try to double click into one of the folders... it times out. The
computer basically freezes for about several minutes then gives an error.
The error states:
\\brian\fbdata is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions. The specified network name is no longer available.
This happens on 2 of 3 computers. The third computer gets in and browses
just fine. All computers are XP Professional.
I really hope this is something small. I heard such great things about this
VPN unit... I'm a consultant and am contracted to set up this companies VPN.
They are obviously losing patience.
I hope I explain this problem correctly... if it is unclear please let me
know.
If anyone can help... I will be very very grateful.
Thanks!

- Windows XP Setup >> Upgraded install of XP over W2k - no internetHello, All!
I installed XP as an upgrade rather than clean install over my w2k system
(installed it over 1 of 2 w2k OS partition installations so I'm operable in
my dual boot by booting up on w2k).
I have a problem with the XP system. I can not access the internet. I am on
a cable modem which worked fine with w2k. But I've have been totally unable
to gain access with XP.
Thanks and help appreciated.

- Windows XP Update >> !Where the @#$@# is KB918899?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Updates notification tells me that KB918899 (Cumulative Security update for
Windows Explorer for Windows XP) is available to download.
Clicking on the link in update notifications takes me to this webpage:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
Guess what, no sign of the above update, or ANY of the August
updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It ONLY LISTS the July updates.
So I try this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-aug.mspx
This web page lists the update, but guess what happens when you click on the
link....
It goes STRAIGHT TO http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx
again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on Microsoft you've been providing these updates long enough now to not
be making STUPID mistakes like this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I finally did manager to get the update but ONLY with the help of a third
party email newsletter that provided the correct link to the download....
For anyone else trying to find this update try here:

- Windows XP >> Setting program access and defaultsI am using OS is XP Pro w/SP2
The configuration in "Set Program Access and Defaults" is set to Custom.
The "Choose a default e-mail program" is set to "Use my current e-mail
program"
The box beside "Outlook Express" is checked.
I can go to Set Program Access and Defaults and set the email program to
Outlook Express. And I can set the radio button from Custom to Microsoft
Windows.
Although I set both choices and then select OK and exit that panel, when I
reopen the Set Program Access and Defaults panel the radio button choices
have reverted back to Custom and Use my current e-mail program.
How can I make these changes take effect permanently?

Open control panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > here you look
for application error logs.
you must look for your hardware driver updates-like AGP Card;mouse etc

- Windows XP Network >> IP ConflictI have an odd IP Conflict. In one office I have a laptop and a desktop
computer for some reason the IT that was here before me has the laptop set up
to only use wireless connection even when docked, he then gave the same IP to
the desktop that the laptop onboard NIC had. (this I did not find out till
the other day) The laptop was having issues that is when I noticed that even
when docked it was running on wireless so I enabled the onboard NIC this then
caused a conflict with the desktop comptuer the inetern uses. Now to my
issue.
I changed the IP of the laptop however the desktop still got the ip conflict
so I then changed the IP of the desktop. Once both systems were up and
running on the network I decided to change the desktop back to the old IP as
soon has you do that it gives you a conflict however if you try to ping the
old IP it times out. Can the old IP be stuck someplace in the computer
itself? I thougth maybe it was still on the laptop so I undocked the laptop
and still had the issue on the desktop. I uninstalled and reinstalled the
NIC on the desktop with the exact same results.

- Windows XP >> Synchronizing Offline Folders ProblemI have a user that has been using Offline folders successfully. Last week all of sudden it displayed an error that it could not synchronize the files. It kept notifying the user that files needed to be synchronized but it just would not do it. I deleted all the synchronized files but now when I try to set up the folders to synchronize, the option Make Available Offline does not exist. I have verified that Offline folders are enabled. Not sure where to go from here.

- Windows XP >> anyone know of a multi user temp/cookie/crap cleaner?ive had a geek squad MRI cd just for this purpose, as you start it up,
its got a gui that shows all the user accounts for the pc your on, and
lets you check which accounts you want cleaned, and what you want
cleaned on each account, like cookies, temp files ect...
as an network admin, this was invaluable, instead of logging into each
account and running a temp cleaner. i just wondered if there was
another proc out there that did this? or if anyone knew the name of
the proc thats on the geed squad cd that runs this, ive looked and i
cant tell what the name of it is.
i was making a windows xp PE live cd, and i wanted to have this sort
of utility on it.
or possibly would anyone know how to make a .bat file that did this
for me, then i could just add it to the live distro.

- Windows XP Network >> Cancelled Network Setup Wizard during setupMy PC (Win XP Home) was connected to the Internet via
cable modem using a USB port because I had no Ethernet
card. PC worked great for months. I wanted to free-up
the USB port so I bought an Ethernet card so I can connect
to the cable modem via Ethernet.
I just installed the Ethernet card with out errors.
Then XP asked if I wanted to start the Network Setup
Wizard and I started it.
I got part-way through the setup and realized that it is
not what I wanted to do and I closed it.
Since then, I cannot use Internet Explorer, Outlook
Express, or anything else that attempts to access the
Internet.
Error messages are:
- "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered
a problem and needs to close..."
- "System is shutting down... initiated by NT
AUTHORITY/SYSTEM..."
- "messge RPC service terminated unexpectedly..."
- When I run IPCONFIG /RENEW from the command prompt, I
get the error "An error occurred while renewing interface
Local Area Connection : An operation was attempted on
something that is not a socket."
The behavior described above continues even after
unistalling the Ethernet card (and physiclly removing it)
and use the USB port to connect the cable modem.
Help. I need to get to the Internet.

I want to be able to run the regedit program from my account. Any

- Windows XP Security >> 'Puter ProblemsHello there...
I am having problems accessing stuff on my computer...
i.e. I don't have the appropriate permissions even though
I was logged on as administrator (even when logged on
under users with admin privelages). When I right-click "My
Computer" and select manage, don't have appropriate
permissions. I've tried booting into safemode and
performing tasks I still don't have the privelages
(admin). There's other problems i've been having as
well... For instance all the icons of the exeuctible files
show the icon when there is no icon specified... Then I
specify the icon and the proper icon appears... but when
the computer is restarted of the user is logged off, it
reverts to the "no icon" icon.
Another problem I've been having is with the command
prompt. When I click start, select run, and
type "command" I get the popup of the dos window, but the
problem is that any command that I type in there doesn't
respond. ie, ipconfig, netstat... the only command that it
responds to is "exit". Even if i type a command or
something that doesn't exist, it just repeats the same
line... here's a screen shot:

- Windows XP Support >> Lost cd key!!! AM I BONED???Hi,
Ok, My Hard Drive failed in my PC. I was at sea when this happened(I am in
the Canadian Navy), and my wife told me when I was in Port. So, when I got
home from Sea. I bought a new Hard drive. And installed it. Went to
install my windows. It asks for the cd key. I can't find it. We had moved 6
months ago. And my wife isn't sure if she mistakenly threw out the cd key.
Because, I put all my progam cd's in a cd holder. And cd case and documents
in a box in the basement. But since the move. I can't find it. What the
hell do I do now. Am I boned or is there a way to get a new cd key???

- Windows XP Network >> TCP/IP networking issuesHello...
When I try to ipconfig /renew my wireless adapter to get
a new ip address from my DHCP server it gives me an error
saying something like "... can not perform operation on
something that is not a socket." So I have been looking
things up related to windows xp tcp/ip problems and
found -- Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 299357 --
which states to reset tcp/ip do the following command:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
It then goes on to show what that resetlog.txt log file
should look like which has a whole bunch of stuff in it
and then at the end it states <completed>
When I do the above command it returns successfully from
the command prompt with no errors but when I look at the
log file ALL that is in there is <completed> without the
other normal log messages.
Any help on this would be hugely appreciated because I'm
stumped on why it's doing this and how I can fix tcp
without re-installing all of windows!... :)
Thanks in advance...
