- Windows XP Hardware >> USB Storage Driver not workingI've recently bought a new memory stick after my last one
died whilst connected to the USB port.
Windows XP now does not recognise the new device. It is
recognised in other machines but not the one the previous
memory stick broke whilst connected to.
I can still use PDAs etc via the USB ports no problem.
Does anyone know if/how I can reinstall the USB storage
driver without totally reinstalling XP? I've searched
around the Microsoft drivers site and I cant seem to find
it.....
Thanks,
Mark

- Windows XP Support >> Windows Media Player Crashing my systemI have recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro onto my computer. I am now having
problems playing any kind of movies, be it DVD or any other format. The
problem I am having is that every time I attempt to start a movie, my
computer starts hanging, and if I let it go long enough, the screen starts to
black out intermittently until the computer eventually crashes. When I
reboot, I get the "Windows has recovered from a serious error" to which I
always click "send report". It immediately brings me to a webpage, and says
it was caused by a blue screen error report, but does not give me any useful
information.
I am currently running the NVIDIA Pure Video decoder, which I was using
before my reinstall of Windows. I had no problems before formatting and
reinstalling. I have tried uninstalling Windows Media Player 11 and
reinstalling, and I have tried uninstalling the Pure Video decoder software
and again, reinstalling. I have not changed any of my hardware between the
format and reinstallation of Windows.
I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2. I have downloaded and installed every
Windows Update, including the optional updates. I cannot find anything in
the knowledge base, but it is always possible that I missed it in there.
I would appreciate any help if anyone has encountered this incident before,
or if anyone knows who to go to about this problem. Thank you, in advance.

- Windows XP >> Why do critical updates screw up my computer so often? One of the reasons I am so leary to install microsoft critical updates
is because of the frequent experience of not having a working machine
when it reboots.
Just today I downloaded probably a month's worth of updates to my
otherwise up-to-date XP SP2 machine. The machine installs, reboots and
I'm greeted with 640x480x16 color VGA display. Somehow the critical
updates managed to screw with my video drivers. What?!! I used System
Restore and managed to recover one of my two screens back to hi-res
VGA. But I still have no idea what happened to my other screen.
This is not the first time i've encountered problems like this. I
repeatedly run into problems with the update patches.
I used to own a web server and had serious issues as well. sometimes
the server just wouldn't reboot and i'd have to rollback the latest
updates to recover my system.
Overall I've had much less damage done to my systems from malicious
viruses than i have from these critical updates.
Done ranting.

- Windows XP >> What is this??Running XP SP2
I checked my start-up memo and found %systemroot%memory.dmp
I looked it up in Google and the consensus is to disable it in startup.
However, when I take out the checkmark and reboot, the checkmark is right
back.
Computer runs fine. How do I get rid of this start-up item?

- Windows XP >> XP refuses to copy certain folders (2° posting)Hi
I've been having a lot of problems copying to XP folders to CD burner
recently.
The group have said that I should use the XP copying program but there is
something else going on.
When I try to copy a folder and its subfolders which occupy 288Mo, the image
just before copying ('XP is ready to copy the following files to CD')
occupies only 169Mo and of course a number of files are missing.
There are no error messages though!!
I have a feeling that the problem is due to the fact that I activated the
Windows 'indexing' option recently in some of these missing folders so the
question is...
Is there an issue between indexing and copying?
Has anyone got any other ideas as to why some folders refuse to be copied?
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> Network and Hardware ConflictWhen I run either ITunes or Printshop v20 my HP 2610 all-in-one printer goes
nuts. All the panel lights flash and it becomes unusable until I remove the
power cord and plug it back in. The same thing happens when I run the
software from my HP notebook and my desktop computer. The printer is
connected to both computers via a wired network. I have tried changing the
network address for the printer numerous times without result. Anyone have
any suggestions???? Thanks!

- Windows XP >> Personalized Favorites Acting StrangelyI've got an annoying problem with IE 6.0. I have the Personalized
Favorites setting enabled. However, here are some of the things I've
observed.
1. Sometimes, on SOME Favorites folders, the most-recently-used
favorites appear, with the less-recently-used Favorites being hidden,
exactly as expected.
2. Somtimes, this feature works exactly OPPOSITE, with the
less-recently-used Favorites being displayed, while the
most-recently-used favorites are hidden.
3. Sometimes, the feature does not work at all, and all Favorites are
displayed. This happens most often on the Favorites folders I access
most frequently, even if I only use one shortcut over and over again!
4. Somtimes, a folder will be displayed correctly one day, and then
everything will be displayed the next day, even though I have changed
nothing!
It's a little thing, but it's gotten too irritating to deal with.
Anyone have any ideas other than a schizophrenic IE?

- Windows XP Update >> Not allowing me to use ActiveX ControlsWhenever I try to perform manual Windows Update on one of the computers I
service, the information bar pops down and says "Your security settings do
not allow web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer."
I've tried changing all activex settings to enable or prompt, but same thing
keeps happening. I am unable to set the internet security setting to
medium-low.
Running Windows XP Pro SP2 with somewhat current updates (stopped working
all of a sudden; user has only user privileges, so couldn't have done this).
I don't mind running automatic updates, but it's against company policy, so
I just want to standardize everything. What am I not doing/doing wrong?

Windows XP >> CAN FIND THE ANSWER??? NEED HELP!!???
In terms of Windows help, I actually responded to www.myhelpdesk.org =
with a question about connecting a non-USB WinME computer to a USB =
printer shared on an XP machine.
Now, I admit, that scenario is actually a little trickier than it may =
sound, but the response was quick and got me looking in the right place =
on HP's site for the exact answer.
My only complaint about www.myhelpdesk.org is rather trivial, but I like =
to know a persons name when I am communicating with them. Having said =
that, I wouldn't hesitate to send more questions that way.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Sound issues (getting static when I play music)For the last couple of weeks I've had problems playing music on my PC. As a
matter of fact this problem coincides with my udpated to XP Service Pack 2.
Every music file I now play has an awful static noise to it, you can still
hear the music, but there's a lot of static with it as well. I didn't have
this problem before. I have checked all my cords on my speakers and on my
sound card (which is an Aureal Vortex 8810 Audio WDM) and they are all in
securely. I have tried adjusting the volume on both my speakers and in
Windows and it doesn't help me, hence the reason I'm here. Anyone have any
clue as to what the problem could be?

problem and if so how do you permanently disable the blasted thing?

- Windows XP Support >> Deletions in WinXP Pro II6:02 PM 6/20/2005
6/20/2005
How would I DELETE in Windows XP Pro 2? By this I mean there are
certain file types (extensions) that SOME of them do not delete. For
example, a WAV file with that extension does not delete when I:
1. press the delete key;
2. press the delete and the shift keys;
3. do the same as 1. and 2. above clicking on "delete" in the
list I get from right-clicking.
Thank you,

- Windows XP Setup >> Installing xp on an existing dual boot systemHi,
I need to install xp professional on my machine, it's a
dual boot (windows 2000 and windows me). The original os
I had was windows me (c drive), I then installed w2k (f
drive), I used partition magic 6.0 to partition my disc.
I now would like to install xp instead of ME. Do I need
to do anything or are there any special things that I
need to do before installing xp? or is all I need to do
is start installation and when it asks me which drive I
then choose drive c.
Thank you

- Windows XP Setup >> offline files behaviourSince last nights backup one of our users reconnected her laptop to the
network, presumably updating the server with those files she had changed
while at home. Since then I have had to restore our data drive from backup,
which appears to have replaced the files in her offline cache with the older
versions.
I understood the offline files function to use the modified date to
determine which version of the file was most recent, and therefore which copy
to change. Why would the restored file on the server, with an older date
stamp, replace the newer version on the laptop?

- Windows XP >> Opening files Performance IssueI have a network of 20 computers. We are using Office 2003 sp2 or sp3.
About 5 of them are experiencing issues when opening files (word, excel,
power point,
TXT, PDF, ETC). When a user opens a file though My Documents it doesn't
matter
if it's over the network or local. It can take 2-3 minutes for the file to
load and show.
If the user opens Word, Excel, Notepad, or Adobe though a shortcut (without
a file)
and then goes to file -> open & chooses a file it will open regularly.
The computers are identical to the ones w/o issue. They are 3.2gHz 1gb ram.
WinXP SP2,
The Server is Win03 SP1.
Any advice?

- Windows XP >> Taskbar/desktop icons disappear when explorer usedI've searched high and low for an answer, and can't seem to come up
with one... when I log on to my computer, and try to open explorer, the
taskbar and all desktop icons disappear for roughly 3 seconds, then
reappear. I am unable to open my computer/documents/music/pictures etc.
Essentially, there seems to be something stopping me from being able to
view the files on my computer. I have run Norton/Ad-Aware/Spybot
several times, and have been clean, except for one file in a recycle
bin which is left over from a former install of windows... meaning I
cannot delete it until I can get into explorer. Ha.
Has anyone ever experienced this, or know of any way to fix it? I have
tried searching, but have come up empty. Thanks in advance!
