- Windows XP >> IE Content PasswordI have a user that setup a password for the content filters on their
computer at home. They have XP Home.
They went to IE, went to tools, then clicked on the CONTENT tab. They
enabled the CONTENT ADVISOR and set a password, but now, they forgot what
the password is so they are not able to view anything.
How can they reset the password?

- Windows XP Network >> Repairing network connectionIf I try to repair my network connection in Windows XP I get a repair
failed: purging dns resolver cache message. Also ipconfig /flushdns
gives the following error message:
Could not flush the DNS Resolver Cache: Function failed during
execution.
A previous reply stated that the original poster did not have the DNS
client cache service running. How does one start this service? I can't
find any information in Windows Help and Support.
Thanks.

- Windows XP Support >> XP Desktop Reloads UncontrollablyI have a bizzare problem. Often after individual windows close the entire
desktop goes blank and then reloads like a fresh start up. I've removed all
of the spyware that I can find using three different tools and the problem
persists...it's been going on for months. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> Win Xp Pro reinstall over Win98SE/WinXP Pro UpgradeI am installing a new hard drive and wish to install a
fresh version of WinXP Pro without reinstalling Win98SE
and the WinXP Pro Upgrade.
Must I purchase new WinXP Pro non-upgrade software? If
so, is there any rebate consideration for my previous
Win98SE and/or WinXP Upgrade purchases?
If so, how do I negotiate the purchase/rebate?

- Windows XP Support >> STOP ErrorsI have a little network set up that include my Desktop which is
running Windoze XP Home and a Laptop that is running 2000 Pro.
Suddenly the Laptop is refusing to boot up and generating a "STOP
Error" that says that I should enter Safe Mode and remove all the
peripheral hardware that is installed. When I enter Safe Mode I can't
get to a place where I can uninstall the peripherals, which are a 20
gig Pocketech drive, and a MS Wireless Network card. Nothing I do
seems to get this computer to boot past the STOP Error. Anyone know
anything about this type of error?

- Windows XP Security >> Shortcut to Active Directory OUHey there, I have an annoying little problem. On our
Win2000 desktops we have a shortcut that points to an OU
in Active Directory. The shortcut's target is
ntds://domain/printers. This works fine with 2000, but
XP Pro will not see it. When copying from a 2000 pc it
loses it's target all together. It would also be nice if
I could see "Directory" in My Network Places-->Entire
Network. Any ideas???
Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Support >> Avast and a a virus called aystem restore ...I need some help, please. I downloaded some software from a file sharing
program ,and my avast anti-virus since then was constantly alerting me for
viruses and worms.I got rid of the file sharing program, and also deleted all
software that was taken from that program just in case, and afterwards I
tryed to do a system restore. But it did not work. I got rid of the worms and
some viruses but now I cant do a system restore and everytime my I leave my
PC for 20 mnts or more idle, Avast keeps alerting me of the same infected
file.File name A0045866.EXE, Folder C:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE
(202550A8.....)Virus description HLLP-SIOUX .Any one knows how can i get rid
of this? Should I just go to the folder and delete it?Even being a system
file? Where can I find out more information about this .

- Windows XP >> Long pause on highlighting 'New...'I have a small but irritating problem running XPSP2 - while using file
explorer whenever i r-click and select 'New...' from the context sensitve
menu (to create a new folder for instance) there is a long (10 seconds or
more) pause before the list of file types appears. It does this once, then
becomes almost instant (as it should) if i create a second new folder/file
but if i navigate to another area on the disk and 'create new' there i get
the pause again. It does this for all users and on all drives.
The system is plenty powerful enough, AMD FX-55, 2Gb ram and programs run
fine, photoshop CS for example, so i don't think there is a hardware problem.
I'm sure there's a file somewhere keeping this information that needs to be
remade or something, perhaps something i have to delete which will re-create
itself next time i logon?
It's small but highly irrating and thought someone might have an idea for a
fix?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> OEM Licensing QuestionHi there,
Say if we had a PC that had Windows 98 OEM version on it. We then
upgraded to Win XP using a Win XP Upgrade License (Volume License).
If we were to then totally upgrade the hardware, would this still be
legal? Obviously with an OEM version, as far as I know, you are not
supposed to move it or reinstall it to another PC. But now that I've
upgraded it to WinXP Volume License, does the restriction on the 98 OEM
license still carry through?
Kind Regards,

- Windows XP >> S3 Standby question/problemMy new build (see below) will successfully go into and out of S3 standby and
wake up appropriately for network access (remote desktop, shared folder
access)
Here's the problem- when I boot up another computer in my home network my
new build wakes up even though no network traffic has been requested. Also
with one of my networked pcs on, my new build will constantly wake up (every
5 minutes or so)- again no network traffic has been requested. BTW my new rig
has a shared folder for videos that the other networked pcs occasionally use-
I have simple file sharing turned off
When the other computers are off my new rigs standby problems go away (this
took forever to troubleshoot)!
I've tried putting my new build on a separate switch but same problem- I
also noticed that the "wake up " signal is sent when the windows xp screen on
the booting computer states- loading your settings
Anyone have a solution?- obviously I still want to be able to wake up the
new computer with appropriate REQUESTED traffic- does windows automatically
ping its shares ever so often?
thanks in advance

- Windows XP Support >> WGA and XP ValidationI have a HP desktop which required a recovery operation because of a corrupt
file.
When I attempt to get Windows updates the site requests I validate my XP
copy and the process fails. I have tried all the fixes listed at the site.
Fixing the ActiveX blocks on tools/security.
I get to the express button and than notified to validate which fails and
the update process ends.
HP can only suggest the same fixes at the MS site I have already tried and
MS says they don't support the installation because HP preloaded it.
Anyone have an idea? Is it even important? Is there value to having WGA?
I can manually update which isn't as convenient as the automatic updates.

- Windows XP Setup >> Prob upgrading to XP Home from MEWhen trying to upgrade I received a report stating that my
modem may not work with windows XP. As a result I tried
to use the update program within windows xp setup to
update the setup files.
The problem is that as when the program tells me it is
downloading the updates, the system checks the floppy
drive and then hangs. The small meter on the screen which
signifies activity freezes. The hard drive light stays
lit but without activity.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Task scheduler doesn't run after WinME->WinXP HE upgradeI've been fussing with problem for weeks now - for some reason Task
Scheduler apparently will not recognize my administrator account - a note on
the Knowledge Base indicates that there have been problems of a different
sort when upgrading from Win98/WinME to WinXP.
Have tried various work arounds, tweaks, registry edits suggested here - the
main problem seems to be that when I did the upgrade, the system
"remembered" a former username, even though that account didn't exist after
the upgrade. I have tried renaming my administrator account to that name,
but that doesn't help.
Another possibility that has occurred to me is that Norton Antivirus and
Internet Security may have something to do with this, and I am thinking
about uninstalling them and re-installing - but that seems like a long shot,
and since I'm on about my third over-the-net upgrade with Symantec, I'm
concerned I might have to go out and buy a complete new set if they won't
let me upgrade from the original disk.
Everything else works fine - just this one problem with Task Scheduler,
which is really annoying as it prevents automatic security updates from
running by themselves.
Any thoughts?
Rgds
Alan
