enable putting an overall password for accessing the files on a jump drive
which contains nmerous files? In other words, a single password which would
open the drive for normal use, but render it useless to someone who didn't
have the password.

- Windows XP Network >> file sharing and printing problemsI am using a Laptop (win XP HOME; SP2) and a PC (WIN XP HOME SP2) along with
a wireless router and PCI card for my laptop to connect to the internet.
The main problem is I cant access computers through the network. I have
disabled the firewall and enabled all the exceptions. however, that has still
not worked.
When trying to access the network, I am able to see all the computers on the
network, but it does not let me access them. I get the following message
"The PC is not accesible. You do not have permission. Access Denied"
Before SP2, I did'nt have any problems related to filesharing or network
printing.
Please help me in what I should do in such a situation. I have tried every
thing and am thinking removing SP2.

non-critical updates and everything seemed correctly, but when I tried to
download .NET 1.1 (latest, not sure of the number) The installatiofailed and
gave me this error: 80246002

- Windows XP Security >> Can't clear search historyI am not very technically literate with regard to
computers, so please bear with me. When I double-click on
the search box of any search engine, I get an alphabetical
listing of all of the previously searched-for items. I
have attempted to perform a "Clear Forms," but it never
seems to work. I have also tried restarting after
performing the clear forms, but that also doesn't work. I
have also attempted to delete cookies, history,
and "temporary internet files" under "Internet Options."
None of this has worked. Every time I go back to a search
engine and begin typing in the search box, a list of
previously searched words/phrases keeps coming up. How do
I erase that search history?

computer" policy, the fact that Msoft limits the
activation of Windows XP--purchased legally--to
installation on one & only one machine. Here's my
question: What if the machine that I install XP on today
burns out a week from now? The going price at the IT
store in my neighborhood for Win XP Pro is $300.00+tx. I
find it very difficult to believe that a company as
affluent as Microsoft would not have a policy in place
to "cut some slack" to customers who've paid the serious
bucks for their op system software and then suffer the
misfortune of having something else (e.g., mobo, cpu,
etc) going out. I'm very much looking forward to an
answer on this one.

- Windows XP >> Download goes to paint! Why?OK, if I download something from the internet it goes to paint. How can I
stop this? Like it used to give you options of where to put a download now
it just sends it to paint and paint can't read it!
Talk slow cause I am not the most computer literate person out here!

- Windows XP Setup >> how to use different LAN & internet icon in taskbarThe problem is i am most of the time connected to LAN & many times to
internet ,while disconnecting i have to go and really look for the right icon
then right click and then click on disconnect.
If i could differentiate the colour of two icons or use a different icon for
either of two,job will be little less time consuming & irritating.
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP Support >> InformatioNot sure if this is the right place to ask but when I make an E-Mail in OE
with sound and send to myself and when I recieve in Hotmail the sound does
not play but is there as an attach. Works fine when I get the mail in OE.
Is there a way to make Hotmail do the same?

Anytime I go to my bank's website, it opens but in less than one second my
browser shuts down. I can access this site from other computers, but not
mine. Any ideas?

Well, make sure you have Java or flash things installed to your computer.
Also, try your security settings? When is the first problem started to
happen? Does you bank website did not come at all from your computer that you
are having trouble now? If I were you, I would first check viruses in the
computer then do a Windows XP Upgrade. That is what I can think of this
time!!!

scan.
Then I would scan my PC for Spyware:

- Windows XP Network >> (newbie) frequent need to restart wireless routerI tried searching around newsgroupd but couldn't find a clear solution.
I have an AirLink AR315W wireless router and a max 6 PCs connect to it.
Two of these PCs use 802.11g and the rest use 802.11b on DLink and
AirLink cards. All PCs use XP's builtin wireless configuration and the
router is doesn't use any encryption.
My problem is occassionally the network simply "hangs" Plain and
simple, I can see the SSID from the client PCs but when I hit "Connect"
it just won't push through. Only solution is to restart the router.
This happens about 10+ times a day and its getting frustrating.
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP >> gttask no diusk in driveWhen I start windows or try to load a video file uysing
Quicktime I get a message there is no disk in drvie and
that it is related with something called gttask.exe. I
searched for this program I found two resuls Quicktime
and some part of Windows know as qttask.exe can i delete
these files safly or do I need to reinstalle them.
P.S already tryed uninstalling Quicktime and reinstalling
it and that did not work.

- Windows XP >> File orderIt seems that when I browsed files the folder would have them in
alphabetical order. Now they are to jumbled and I have to specify I want to
see them in alphabetical order. and if I'm selecting several files I have to
keep specifying. Is there a way to set this so that the files are always in
alphabetical order in the folder?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> How to make XP CD Format when Clean Installing??Help! My friend has a new computer, and he already kind of goofed up the
registry (after just three days, ai-curumba). So he wants to do a clean
install. He does have the XP full install disk. However, we ran into a
problem.
When we did what we thought was a clean install, it seems that the hard
drive was not formatted, so that the pre-existing mess of program folders
created by my friend still resided on the drive, and it almost seems like
the registry had the same program entries as before. So, what the heck, we
wanted to just reformat the hard drive to wipe everything clean, and then
install everything from the very beginning.
But, how do you make the XP CD forma the hard drive when doing a clean
install? (When we did the install we chose to keep the previous disk
partitions the same, and installed XP to its previous location. I'm
guessing this is the reason the XP CD didn't reformat the hard drive?? If
so, how much space should we leave for the OS partition? Total drive space
is 60Gigs.)

mice so my mouse cannot be the problem. I try to drag a
box or window by holding and pressing the left button and
then draggin it however it requires me to press and hold
for longer than 3 seconds. It should drag right away. How

when I turn on the computer, the keyboard is not working.
Then I try to go into Bios typing "del" and it worked, this means that the
keyboard is OK.
In device manger I saw yellow (?) , on properties get message(Device Manager
Error Code 31.
This device depends on another device that is not functioning correctly.
What is wrong here, please help me.

- Windows XP Update >> Windows XP Won't Update!!Hi,
I have a Windows XP machine which is attempting to get updates from a SUS
server. (Oh dear I hear you say.) I get the updates downloaded successfully
and they then begin to install. However, upon completion, I check the event
log only to find that the update in fact has not installed at all. I'm logged
in as Local Administrator so I should have full access.
However, if I then check the installation log of the updates which had
problems, it says: Failed To Enable SE_SECURITY_PRIVILEGE
Setup encountered an error: You do not have permission to update Windows XP.
?? Why don't I?? I am an administrator. I'm a bit lost on this one. I'm not
a huge fan of SUS but this is a bit daft!
Any idea's?
Your help would be gratefully appreciated.
