- Windows XP Setup >> Word/Excel 2000 problemUpgraded W98SE to XP Pro without problems, Word and Excel worked ok. Now have
changed file system to NTFS and fitted new HDD. Whe I now start either Word
or Excel, a "Windows Installer" message appears, asking me to insert the
Office 2000 Premium disc, which I don't have.
If I close the messages, both applications work ok, but it's a bit of a
nuisance. Does anyone know how I can workaround this issue please?

First, I would like to thank all who post answers here - extremely
informative and helpful.
Now... I have a client who has a Windows XP computer and would like to
dual boot with Windows 98 as well. He has several leftover Windows 98
hard drives from other computers. Is it possible to just install one
of the 98 hard drives as secondary master, for example, modify the
boot.ini manually to point the second line to the 98 hard drive, and
have it all work together like that? I would really hate to have to
install 98 first and then re-install XP just to get dual boot working.

get mail... I have 5 different setting's including the one
I use now which is MSN.com, the other's are AOL, OE, and
hHotmail. I was getting some error's before I got MSN
hooked up and sending and recieving and now they bot (AOL,
and MSN) do the same, but would like all including OE to
be configured and just realized that this must be the same
thing cause I try getting those error messages' in OE to
come up again and they dont now that I have MSN mail. So,
can you have all these account's included with OE and that
would be AOL, MSN, Hotmail, and OE, I'm thinking why not..
But last time I posted this I wasnt' clear on those
error's I was getting before I started getting MSN
account's to go through. Anyone have any answers on this
feel free to let me know.

have done this before and never had a problem. Now it is not even showing up
in my control panel. It will not let me manually uninstall it using the
osuninst.exe command. I cannot get rid of it to reinstall it from my disk.
Someone please help!! I really need a cleaned version asap.

- Windows XP Setup >> Local Profile Migration into Windows 2003 Server (Standard) DomainI have several Windows XP Professional users who have local user profiles on
their desktops. I have just created a new domain and need to migrate these
profiles into the domain. Is there a way to do this?
In other words, when these user login to the new domain, a new profile is
created for them and the local profile is seperate from the domain profile.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have Windows XP Home Edition. I have recently changed my DVD region from
region 2 to watch an American DVD. I still have 1 change left, and yet when i
try and change the region back to region 2 it comes up with the message:
Unable to update region setting. Please make sure the drive contains region
2 media and you have administrative privilege.
I have tried several of my region 2 dvds and i am the only user and
administrator of the computer.
Any help would be much appreciated,

I have a question regarding unattended setup of WinXP using RIS but couldn't find an answer yet. Maybe someone can give me an idea.
During the unattended installation of Windows XP from a RIS server, the machine joins the domain automatically. Usually, this functions without any problems because one of the domain controllers in the LAN is used. But infrequently (one time out of 30 for whatever reason), a domain controller from a remote location is used to add the computer to the domain (a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory).
Because the replication topology is defined to only replicate all remote locations at night, when trying to log on to this machine after installation is finished, the computer account can't be found in the domain, because now a local domain controller is used to validate the request. Searching for the computer account, it can then be found somewhere on a remote domain controller but needs to be replicated first.
Does anybody know if it's possible to define a local domain controller during setup to add the machine account to the domain? All domain controllers within the LAN have a normal replication. I've searched for parameters in the unattend.txt and the configuration of the RIS but didn't succeed. We want to start a Windows XP rollout soon but can't find a solution. The WAN is too busy to allow replication during the day, there are about 40 remote locations.
Any ideas, tipps, tricks, whatever? Thanks. Ingrid

- Windows XP >> 5 min boot time.I am running win XP pro on an AMD64 processor, with 1 gig of memory. I have
an 80 gig hd that has 60 gig of free space.
My computer worked great till 3 days ago when the system just crashed. I
reloaded winxp pro with a full format of the drive.
Now when I reboot the computer goes through the post just fine. Then the
screen goes black for about 30 - 60 seconds. Then I get a row of white bars
at the bottom of the screen and it slowly progresses to a solid bar in about
4 minutes. This appeares to be some type of harddrive issue because the hd
light is flashing.
After the bar goes away then the windows bootup screen appears and all
starts like normal.
My question is, what is that white progress bar and how can i do away with
this delay in booting.

How can I disable Windows File Downloader. I prefer to
use Go!Zilla but for some reason, although Go!Zilla is
configured to "Integrate with Browser clicks" which should
make it auto download anything that wold normally start
Windows downloader, it just won't work.
The main advantage of Go!zilla is that it will resume a
broken download which is useful if downloading very large
files.

He thought at one time he had a virus... Also when he
gets "Updates" from Microsoft, his PC doesn't keep them
and it just tries to update the same thing over and over
again.....

first uninstall the current version.
However, the software may be corrupted because it won't

This is the info! The account's password was not set to expire, and
everything looks right, except that it does not appear in Control Panel/User
Accounts or the Welcome Screen, and the "Classic Logon" doesn't work.
What's the problem? What caused this? And most importantly HOW DO I FIX IT?
Now, do I have to reformat and reinstall windows almost every month? This
is so focking retarded!

I don't expect compensation or attribution, but here are some features I
expect be included in the upcoming Windows Vista:
1. Incorporate the file system into the registry.
2. Include a fart sensor (to be incorporated in the seat by the user) with
the next Windows release, and have the output logged into the registry.
3. Make ALL files excutable.
4. Execute ALL files with rundll32.exe
5. Hide file extensions from the user. Wait, this is done already!
6. Rename all files as soon as they are installed to very long hex strings,
so as to hide from the user, among others, the biometric fart logs.

- Windows XP Support >> A Strange ProblemI have a Dell Dimension 2400 running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. When I
start the system I get a screen asking which OS I want to load. One is XP
Home, and the other is a line of garbled nonsense.
No matter which one I select the results are the same: I get the windows
loading screen with the moving bar, then the screen goes black and the
cursor appears - and that's all. I can move the cursor around the black
screen but nothing more.
The results are the same no matter which startup option I choose - except
that when I choose 'Safe Mode' the cursor appears but I can't move it.
What the heck is going on, and how can I fix it?

- Windows XP Network >> Workgroup vs DomainWe have a Windows NT 4.0 domain consisting of about 250 workstations. Our
WAN stretches over 8 states. There is a specific situation at each location
in which we have 4 to 8 pc's in what we call a "workgroup". This worked
fine in the Windows 98 days. Now we are adding a W2000 Pro or XP Pro machine
to each laocation as the "host". In other words, this is the pc that shares
it's resources. The other pc's may be W2000 Pro or W98 or a combination. If
I add all the pc's to the domain and each user is authenticated by the
domain and I share my resources to certain users of the domain, everything
is great.......until the WAN goes down and they cannot be authenticated by
the domain. Is there a better way ? Would I be better of not joining these
pc's to the domain ?

- Windows XP Setup >> SP2 - unable to login, activation requestsI have an ACER laptop that came with a pre installed OEM version of
Windows XP Pro. It (had) all the latest updates, but after applying
sp2 would not allow me to login under any accounts with error message
like 'could not create temp profile DETAIL - insufficient system
resources.' followed by a restart.
After logging in to SAFE mode (and it would only do this every third
boot!) the event log shows the same error, PLUS ACTIVATION errors. I
rolled back to SP1a (congrats MS - this worked perfectly) and I tried
running an installation repair, which of course required me to
re-active - which it did successfully. A second attempt produced the
same result - but with a dialogue telling me I had to activate before
I could logon. It then proceeded to do this, and I was then back to
the same scenario - 'UNABLE TO CREATE PROFILE' followed by a dialogue
with an X and and OK button. I've rolled back to SP1 successfully
again, but Windows update will soon prompt me to install SP2 again I'm
sure!
Can anyone suggest what's happening here? Rob C
