- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows Update Settings For SUS in Windows XPI am deploying a SUS server at my workplace and on the
client side there are only 2 settings in the group policy
editor for configuring Windows updates on Windows XP
workstations and there are more on Windows 2000? Windows
2000 seams to have more control over the Windows update
settings using the group policy editor without having to
edit the registry like in Windows XP. Anyone have any
ideas why this is like this or if Microsoft is going to
include all the necessary options in the group policy
editor to configure this stuff any time soon?

- Windows XP Setup >> gm.dls cache fileI'm trying to get around Windows File Protection (which I only learned about
in an earlier post here). I want to replace the gm.dls sound file supplied
by Microsoft with one of my own. I had done this, and used it successfully
for a while, but suddenly WFP stops me from making any changes and has
reverted to the original file.
One way suggested was to change the cached version of this file, which is
not protected. But I can't find it. It's not in any of the .cab files in
windows\driver cache\I386 (where one source suggests) and I can't find a
folder called dllcache (which another source suggested).
Does anyone know where to find it?

sound card/drives/windows stuff ect. well i noticed my sound icon wasnt
in my task bar so i went to go put it in their. When i go to click on it
says:
Error: WIndows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because
the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
I have looked in the add/remove programs and i dont know about anything
in there. Then i also went to the windows programs in the add/remove
programs and i couldn't find anything on sound devices or anything of
that sort. I have had it do this to me before but i dont remember what
i did. If anyone can point me in the right directin that would be
great.
I have a VIA AC'97 built in card . Its 6.1 sourround. I also have a SB

- Windows XP Security >> Policies on XP in NT4.0 domainI am new to XP policies and need to set up a policy on XP
workstations that are on a domain using NT4 as domain

would like the policy to apply to just certain users on
the workstation and not to all users. Basically, I need
to disallow changing IE proxy for certain user groups. Is
this possible and where do I find instructions on

Windows XP Network >> Search on a network returns no results if server is too slow (simple file sharing)
I have two computers, both XP home SP2.
Computer A has simple file sharing enabled.
I am using Computer B, to map map a shared drive from computer A.
During times of high resource usage on computer A, if I use windows
search from Computer B, and look for files on the share of Computer A,
it appears to succeed and says no files were found. No error message
is reported. cmd prompt dir of the same share will still show files,
however.
Once computer A's resource usage gets lower, windows searches from
computer B work again.
Is this a known issue? Are there any workarounds? Windows search is
far more functional than dir (and allows copy of search results), so
I'd prefer not to have to drop to a dir-based search.

- Windows XP >> Problems with fax cover pagesI'm new here, so I hope this is right place to ask.
I use WinXP, SP2. I am a book reviewer and editor, and I have a need to
send faxes regularly. The fax capability in WinXP has worked just fine, up
until yesterday.
For some reason beyond my understanding, all of my personal cover pages have
disappeared! I've done everything to try to find them -- searching for
.cov, for the name of the cover page, etc., but nothing.
I know I haven't erased them -- I use them all the time. Does anyone have
any idea what's happened? Naturally, I looked in the recycle bin and
they're not there, either.
Thanks for any help you can give.

- Windows XP >> Black screen on start upI formated my C: drive, and then did a clean installation

- Windows XP Network >> XP Home not connecting to SBS 2003Dear Group,
I'm Having trouble connecting a notebook computer running WIN XP Home to
our office server running WIN SBS 2003. I'm hoping that you can give me
some tips on how to trouble shoot the problem. Allow me to tell you the
story so far.
I installed a Netgear wireless network card on the notebook computer
last week. I followed the installation instructions without incident
and I'm able to connect to the Netgear wireless router. When I check
the router configuration page, I can see the notebook is logged into the
router.
Now when I try to map the network drives on the server, the notebook
says that it cannot find the server. Also when I try to log on to the
Internet through the router, I can't. Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Coded symbols box appears after WindXP default loading screenWe have 3 computers on our home network. 2 computers (XpPro & XpHome) have
developed the following problem on Windows loadup. The computers boot, we
see the default WINDOWS XP loading screen, followed by a blank screen with a
rectangular box. This box has symbols in it menu bar and another coded
symbol in the upper left of the box in the subject area, followed by an OK
button at the bottom. If we click the X to close the program nothing
happens, if we click the OK button, windows proceeds to the Welcome screen
then loads to the desktop.
What is this box, how do we get of rid of it, and why did it happen on the 2
computers?
Any help and info would help, as this is very aggravating at each boot up.

- Windows XP Setup >> Thank YouI want to thank everyone who answered my questions. It solved problems that
have been perplexing since I got my new computer in mid June. And a special
thanks to Galen.
I wanted to add a few tidbits of info that I have learned about my XP
system. You experts probably know what I am about to say, but if the Dell
support people did not, maybe it will help someone.
1. No old software can be added to an XP computer unless it says it is
compatible with XP. I had added several including a webcam. They all had
to be removed. I was never warned about that.
2. I was getting the blue screen with white warnings, very often.
Occasionally my OE would freeze. No Dell experts had a solution.
One happened to mention that Netscape was not supported by Dell or MSN. I
removed Netscape, which I preferred over OE, and I have not had a problem
since. That was a month ago.
3. Lastly, the Dell support icon would not open. I talked to Dell support
and he had me remove the old support and reinstall, it still would not work.
He was supposed to call me back in one week and we were to remove everything
(I also tried system restore),( and it also said there was a file missing)
and go back to the original configuration when the computer was new. He
never called. BUT, I got an update message for a 3.0 support. I had no
idea what I had. But I updated, installed and it has been working ever
since.
I hope it helps someone.
