- Windows XP Security >> Outlook Preview Pane and Virus Attachment InfectionHello, I am in the IT field and I am confused whether previewing an email can
infect you with a virus. I cannot seem to get a clear answer after talking to
5 different people. Most say you should not preview messages because it can
launch viruses, but my understanding of attachments does not jive with that
concept. I believe previewing is the same as opening the email. I
understand that in order to view the attachment, you can choose to download
and view it, otherwise the Preview pane will not show the content of the
attachment. If the attachment is a .exe type virus for example, the exe will
not run unless I choose to open it, so how can a preview window launch the
exe? Or perhaps current vectors are more creative and can infect me in other
ways more creative than the just cited simple exe example? If you view the
file, you do not execute the attachment...that has been my experience.
However, if the message itself has embedded code, then it is a different
matter. Am I correct? Please help.

- Windows XP >> unable to open filesWhen I try to open a file from a web page, my screen
comes up blank. The word done does show up in the lower
left hand side. And I have tried to right click to save
target as... into my desktop and when that is complete, I
click on the icon on my desktop and it is still blank.

- Windows XP >> Command line : how to get the .cmd file name I'm runningHi,
I wrote a.cmd, which calls b.cmd. Both a.cmd and b.cmd are located in the
same directory (in fact, in the same UNC share). I don't want to tell WHERE
to find b.cmd, because if I change the server or share name, my script won't
work any more. How can I do this ?
I tried to use %CD%, but it seems that if the startup directory is a UNC
share, it is unusable.
Maybe there is a way to get in a variable the complet filename of the .cmd I
am running : this way, I could run a path command to add the server/share
part to the current path. Besides, I could use the filename part to generate
a log file, such as %mybatchfilename%.log.
Can anyone help me ?

- Windows XP >> ldp-200 from LexarI have a ldp-200, a mp3 player from lexar media working with sd cards, but
windows xp doesn't recognise it. It work fine on mac os and windows 2000,
but it is shown as an 'unknown device' in xp's device manager. Lexar says
the device is meant to work with a generic driver. Somenoe has an idea?

- customize >> disable logon screenI have a machine running XP pro with two accounts,
Administrator and ASP.NET for my .NET. I would like to
start the machine without clicking on the administrator
account. witch has no password , so every time I start my
machine will start my programs with out me clicking on
the account.
any info on that?

- Windows XP >> Event log error 4226I've got one pc on the network which has an awful lot of event id 4226
"TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent
TCP connection attempts"
I've Googled this and I understand that changes were made to tcpip.sys in
the service pack install so this is by design but I don't understand what is
the cause. The machine in question has no additional or unusual software on
it compared to another and a virus scan and malware scan show nothing.
I've downloaded a patch to fix this
(http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads) but I don't really want to
apply the patch without understanding why I'm getting so many 4226 events.
Any thoughts?

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB Thumb Drive & Free Space[If this is a well-known problem I apologize. I've searched the boards
and can't seem to find this problem......]
I have an el-cheapo 64MB thumb drive purchased off eBay. (This fact,
I realize, might be the answer to the issue......)]
When files are deleted I don't recover all available space. To prove my
point
I formatted the drive. WinXP (Home) showed 60+MB available. I copied
32MB of data onto the drive. Then deleted all the data. WinXP then showed
52MB available and 8MB used. There were no files/folders visible in
Explorer.
(View/Options is set to show all files.)
Anyone know why this is happening?

- Windows XP >> XP startup and shut down dialoguesHi
I just reinstalled Win XP but now when I boot up I get the password prompt.
I leave the password blank but it always asks. Then, when I shut down I get
a dialogue i've never seen before asking me to choose from a drop down list
of shut down, standby, etc.
Previously I only slected shut down on the start bar then there were three
options as buttons, not a list.
I do i get rid of what I have?

- Windows XP >> Lost Flag key + F to go to FindHi All,
I was doing some tweaking (tweak ui), and needed to get to find.
I did a Flag key + the F key, but Find All Files did not come up.
Same with Flag key + R for Run.
I know I can go to Start, Run or Start, Find, but I much prefer using
the key combination.
Anybody run across this one. What did I do that I can undo to get
these shortcuts back.

- Windows XP Hardware >> new DellI just received a new dell with windows XP Pro. I have
installed a couple of new software that was necessary for
work, and have attempted to set up the network on it with
the other Gateway in the office. Now when I go into
windows explorer it shuts down as soon as I try to click
on something, and on both computers when I try to use run
it will not do anything and will just go back to the
desktop. Also, on the networking we had ethernet setup
on our computers and was working fine until my computer
crashed and I replaced with the Dell. Now mine sees the
other computer but it doesn't see mine. I used ping and
it went through to mine but when we try to log on it says
there is not a network.
Any help with these problems would be great.

Windows XP >> direct cable connection
I get the message "the network path not found" When I
enter the name of the host computer. On a Windows XP
computer as gust and a Windows 98 computer as host with a
direct cable connection on the parallel ports that is
connected. If some one can give me some ideas on what to
do next I would appreaciate.

This is my first post to this group so please forgive me
if I'm asking something that would be more appropriately
posted to another group somewhere, or if it's covered in
an FAQ somewhere (that I haven't been able to find!).
I have a problem with three XP Pro machines on an Ethernet
LAN browsing mounted drives from the Windows NT 4 Server
PDC.
When I login to the domain from any of the XP machines
(using any valid userid) 2 drives get mounted from the
server, one via logon script, the other via the user's
profile home path. Note however that though the drives get
mounted slightly differently the problem behaviour is the
same for both drives.
Once logged onto an XP Pro machine, when I try to browse
the two network drives mounted from the NT 4 server,
response is VERY slow. It can take 5 minutes for the
folder list to be displayed in the Explorer window. Whilst
I'm waiting for the window to display the folder list I
can start a Command Prompt on the same machine and browse
the mounted drives no problem at all from the command
prompt. So the drives do get mounted no problem, and it's
only when going via Explorer/desktop that the slow
response is seen.
The fact that the Command prompt method of accessing the
drives works as quickly as expected, and that each of the
3 XP Pro machines has different hardware for accessing the
network (Ethernet card, pcmcia card, usb laptop docking
station), I believe rules out hardware as the cause.
The LAN has a mixture of XP Pro, Win 2000 Pro and Win98
clients, and a single Windows NT 4 server. ALL the XP Pro
machines display the problem accessing the mounted server
drives, none of the other clients do. If I share a drive
from a Windows 2000 client the XP Pro clients can access
and browse the Win 2000 drive no problem.
I've tried disabling the anti-virus on the XP machines, no
difference.
So it's only when the XP Pro machines access drives
mounted from the NT 4 server, and only when using the GUI
interface to browse those drives. I've searched the
Internet and Microsoft's website without finding a
solution. I can't help but feel it's something very simple
that I should have thought of by now :-(

is working properly. However, through the event viewer I
am informed that the device has a 'bad block'. Can anyone

- Windows XP Hardware >> Repost: Failed to install IDE channels (primary and secondary)I have a MB with Intel 865 chipset. The storage controller has installed
as "Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers" with the latest drivers
from Intel. However the drivers for the primary and secondary IDE
channels fail to install with a message "Driver is not intended for this
platform".
I have Windows XP Professional 2002 SP1 with the latest updates installed.
New info: I replaced the driver for the storage controller with the
"Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" and when trying to install
the two IDE channels Windows still fails twice with the message "Driver
is not intended for this platform".
How can this problem be solved?
Any help will be highly appreciated.

sevice it is already in manual mode. How can I get these updates installed?

- Windows XP Network >> connecting two remote computersMyself and another person want to connect our computers
so we can see each others shared folders. We both have xp
pro and are both connected to to isp's through broadband/
cable. we have each set up the other as a user on our
respective computers and have had some fragile sucess
using a VPN. However, this often just will not work, we
have had a string of error messages eg. 733 (tcp/ip
protocol problems) 800 (computers don't even see each
other!). If anyone could guide us through a simple
solution to this problem it would be fantastic. We have
literally wasted weeks messing around with these dam
machines!

- Windows XP >> XP installation stops after rebootI'm trying to install XP in the 2nd partition (D:) on a drive that has
Vista on the 1st partition (C:).
I put the CD in and it seems to go OK, I select the 2nd partition and
it copies all the files across.
When it reboots, though, nothing happens, no OS boots up, it just
stops after "Boot from CD/DVD....."
I've tried repairing the Vista startup and using VistaBootPRO to get
both Vista and XP in the Vista boot menu. In this case, Windows XP
doesn't boot, complaining about missing \ntldr.
I've tried using the XP recovery console, fixmbr, fixboot c:, fixboot
d:, still no go.
Where do I go from here?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Catastrophic Media Failure or Data CorruptionMy Windows XP PC boots into the familiar log-in screen
with multiple users. However, now it's asking for a
password for each user, where it never did before.
Also, after the log-in screen, I get the following
messsage, "Catastrophic Media Failure or Data Corruption
has Occured". Does anyone have any ideas on this and how
to resolve this problem?

- Windows XP >> Startup looking for user nameWhile starting up XP I reach a welcome screen that asks
me to select a user and click to launch windows. The
problem is that there are no names on the left hand panel
to choose from. How do I get past that screen?

- Windows XP Setup >> wont booti installed partition magic on my computer. during its
batch session after the reboot partition magic stopped
with a problem that read stack dump contact partition
magic service center- enter a disk in the a drive. well
when i put the disk in it failed to write to it. so i
rebooted from there. it would go through all of the
sequence to boot all the way to the windows xp logo. then
i would get a flash of a blue screen then it would
automatically reboot. this turns in to a cycle. i went
through all the safe boot options and the last known good
boot. i am stuck and i can not afford to lose what is on
the computer. any help would be appreciated.

I have to right click for the context-menu, to start an application.

- Windows XP >> Cant Delete Old Temp FileWell there are these 5 files that where in C:\Documents and Settings\(My
sisters Old acount)\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\Random temp folder. I just cant Delete them
I have tried Everything. safe mode+cmd, Windows recovery console,ctrl alt
del Explorer.exe then CMD.With all these i have CD'd into the folder where
the files where and i clearly see these 5 files called _ , _ , 0 , x , and r.
all these are five different files = to 0kb but since its under Fat32 it
shows them as 448kb. When i try to delete them using all these methods
including system recovery it tells me "cannot find file C:(insert directory
her)/x" and that includes all five files. I did manage to cut and paste the
Folder so it can be easier to access so i cut and pasted it to a folder
called "C:\luis". The reason I want to delete these files is because I need
to convert my file system to NTFS but it wont let me because of these files
causing a corruption. THis is rediculous and i hope i can fix this without
reformating my hard drive. So anybody got any ideas??

- Windows XP Network >> Sharing USB external hard driveI have a basic Windows peer-to-peer network that I've been using for quite
some time now. I have the following:
1 computer using Windows XP Pro SP2
2 computers using Windows 98SE
1 laptop using Windows ME
I recently purchased a Seagate 160GB USB 2.0 external hard drive. I
connected it to the XP Pro computer since it is the only one with USB 2.0
ports. I tried sharing it across my network, and all appeared to work
well, the 98SE computer I had time to test was able to connect and read and
transfer files to the external drive. However, I do not want to leave the
external drive connected and turned on 24/7. When I tried to disconnect it
from the the XP Pro computer I got a message that files were open and make
sure they were closed first. No files were opened at that time, I believe
I got that message because the 98SE computer was still connected to the
share on the external hard drive. I believe it's similar to the message
you get if you want to reboot a system with shares that says "X users are
connected to this system and may lose data if you reboot... yada yada
yada". So, I tried to unshare the external hard drive, which didn't work
well, it sort of hung the system, so I ended up hitting ctrl-alt-del and
ending the application for the USB hard drive. This freed up the XP system
again. And I was able to disconnect the hard drive.
However, this morning, when I tried to access the 98SE computer, it dragged
very badly and I'm not sure if it's because of releasing that hard drive.
I don't remember if I checked it afterwards last night (sorry). A reboot
got it working properly again.
So, is there a way to share this hard drive without having these types of
problems? Any info is greatly appreciated. It just would be nice if I
could share the drive, rather than transferring files I want to copy to it
from other computers over to the computer the drive is connected to.
