- Windows XP Network >> Standby & wake on lan -problemHello,
I'm running a web server on my Win XP SP1 machine. To enable waking of the
computer from standby by requesting a web page on the web server, I've set
NIC Power Management option to "Allow this device to bring the computer out
of standby."
This works fine, only now my problem is that the computer resumes from
standby by itself in every few minutes even when there is no network traffic
between the computer and internet.
If I unplug the computer's network cable from the external adsl modem, the
computer won't resume from standby by itself, but obviously neither can the
computer be connected from internet.
Or if I change NIC Power Management options to "Only allow management
stations to bring the computer out of standy.", the computer won't resume
from standby by itself, but needs a magic packet to wake up. However the
magic packet -scenario is not implementable in my case.
Could it be that the network traffic between the computer and the external
adsl modem is causing the computer to wake up? If so, how can that be
avoided other than using the ways described above? Or is there some other
source that is triggering the NIC to wake up the computer?

- Windows XP >> Network Monitoring Program more simple than "MS Network Monitor v3"?Hi, i have been appointed the "sysadmin" of my small organization's
network (since i supposedly know more than anyone else here,
debatable) and my first task is to find the bandwidth hogs and IM
slackers.
We have a linksys router and everyone insists on using windows so it
is more or less a windows network. We do not have a server (yet, i am
lobbying the director but its an uphill battle) so i don't have a
computer where all the traffic goes through. I found MS Network
Monitor v3.x (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933741) and it *seems*
to do what i need like view network traffic w/o being installed on a
server only problem is that it is waaaay over my head and i have
little concept of how to filter/interpret the data.
I am trying to find a free app (lobbying my boss for a server is hard
enough as is w/o investing in even more software) that will simply
allow me to identify the sites users are visiting, how much they are
down/uploading, what they are down/uploading, and the services they
are using and how often they are using them (mainly instant
messaging), etc etc etc. And of course the information needs to be
understandable by someone like me (ie "advanced user" but not hacker/
sysadmin/guru).
Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated!
Cheers

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> mm crashesi import clips and then drag and drop them into the 'frames' or the timeline.
after 3 or 4 clips have been added, mm crashes and sends an error report. The
advice from MS is that it could be my c-media drivers, however I have the
most up to date drivers available.
anyone encounter such problems? is there a fix?

- Windows XP Network >> Windows Firewall of SP2 slows down LAN sharingHi,
Tested with XP SP2 to share files with a Windows-2000 client PC, if
Windows Firewall is turned ON, the workgroup computers who are running
on WinXP SP2 will be listed after for a very very long time.
If Windows Firewall is turned OFF, the LAN workgroup computers
connection is established in a very short time, and the files which
are shared will be listed and files are listed in a very short time.
That's a negative point of Windows Firewall.... Comments?
Thanks.

Windows XP Security >> Browser Hijacker - How can I remove completely?
My fathers PC went unprotected and now his broswser has been hijacked. I've
tried everything to get rid of it completely (Spy Bot, SpySweeper, Hijack
This, Counterspy, Yumgo etc) but it just keeps coming back. So far I have
removed over 600 viruses from his PC but this one is a devious devil.
One of the web browser addresses appears as res://shdocsv.dll/blank
and another as http://540filost.com/randomsites.
I can't access regedit in Run mode and i'm at a loss as to my next move?
Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope! Anyone....please?

I hope that was...
SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
and
Ad-aware SE v1.06 and gthey were BOTh fully updated.
Did you scan in Safe Mode ?
I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.
BHODemon
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
In case you truly have a virus (as indicated by Regedit being disabled) please perform the
following....
Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe
It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {
http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } three batch files, five Kixtart scripts, one Link
(.LNK) file, a PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE. It will
simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend and McAfee Anti Virus Command Line Scanners to
remove viruses, Trojans and various other malware.
C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode. This
way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor?s web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Exit the menu and Reboot the PC.
You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.
When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.
To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.
* * * Please report back your results * * *

Windows XP Security >> Browser Hijacker - How can I remove completely?
In article <EMail@HideDomain.com>,
EMail@HideDomain.com says...

Only download software you can validate as uncompromised - in the case
of non-vendor site you have no guarantee that the files are unmodified
or uncompromised. Anyone providing a link to a non-vendors site with a
direct download should not be trusted, the vendors sites are the safest
place to download their application.
Always remember - only download files from Trusted Sites.
After you install any of these applications and update them, run them in
SAFE MODE to allow them to properly clean your system.
These sites are for downloading Anti-Spyware tools, in order that I
would use them myself:
AdAwareSE can be found here:
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
SpyBot Search and Destroy can be found here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
HiJack can be found here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
Ewido Security Suite Trial can be found here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
CrapCleaner can be found at the vendors site here:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
CleanUp can be found at the vendors site here:
http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html
or from another reputable source:
http://www.tucows.com/get/405276_152071
The following are two links to Antivirus software in order that I would
use them:
You can also download Symantec Trial version of their Antivirus software
from here:
http://www.symantec.com/downloads/
Download AVG Personal Free edition from here:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
These are the actual vendors sites, not some unknown or authorized no-
name site. They also don't artificially increase the hits for sites that
get paid for the amount of traffic they can generate like one poster has
admitted to in this group.
> Accoding to PCBUTTS1
> The authors of the above programs, with the exception of Microsoft has given
> the owner of pcbutts1.com express written permission to redistribute their
> software FROM HIS WEBSITE DIRECTLY.
Except he can't prove it and none of them validate his statement.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Need to partition preloaded hard driveJust bought new computer with preloaded software. I want to partition drive and reinstall software using Recovery CD since that's all I have to work with. XP would only allow me to create 1 partition and limited it's size to 7 Gb. Is there any way I can partition into multiple drives the sizes I want, with or without reformatting and if I do reformat can I use the recovery CD to reload the software onto a smaller C: drive? Any suggestions to accomplish this would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Unable to supress extra line in mail merge in Office Word 2007I'm trying to to create a mail merge set of mailing labels. I'm using the
mail merge wizard and am pretty sure that I'm inserting the fields correctly.
Some records have a company field and others do not. The ones without a
company field display with a blank line. Can't figure out how to suppress
the extra line. I've just upgraded to Office 2007 and am flummoxed as the
previous incarnation suppressed blank lines by default.
I'll be so grateful if someone can help.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> monitor startup apps?Is there anyway to actually monitor startup applications in windows xp pro
or with a 3rd party application? I know I can kill one thing at a time in
the registry or via msconfig and keep restarting, but I would like to know
if there is something that specifically shows "x application started at x
time and completed loading at x time [and took x time to load]".
The reason being, I have a new IBM T43 notebook that I am testing for our
company (we're thinking of switching from Dell D600's to these) and this
system logs in, shows the hard drive active protection icon in the system
tray as loaded then takes a solid minute before anything else happens and
once it does it loads almost all of the system tray icons at the exact same
time, then the remainder at the same time about 30 seconds later. It
basically starts up fast, then once logged in takes a hell of a long time
before I can actually do anything on the system.
Any and all recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks!
