- Windows XP >> Notification AreaHello:
My computer started acting weird. When you put your pointer over an item in
the notification area (systray) instead of the balloon popping up above and
in front, it pops up low and behind the task bar. You can not read what it
says.
Anyone know what caused this?
Thanks

disable the local network nic the direcway will browse ok
until the nic is enabled again. Direcway will not help me
saying they do not support networks but say it will work.
I have gone through all of the setup several times and
double checked all suggestions from windows and direcway
but nothing works. any help we be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Locked files on XP shared drivesI have come across a problem on a number of small Windows networks
where a new machine has been installed running WinXP and it has
folders shared for access across the network. The client machines are
a mixture of both Win98 and WinXP. For most files there is no problem
accessing the shared folders however for a small number of files
mainly Publisher 2000, Access 2000 and zip utilites, once a file has
been opened on the sharing machine it then beocmes locked and cannot
be copied or opened by the other machines on the network. There is no
problem opening on the sharing machine, and this condition does not
clear itself when the machine is rebooted. The network machines
usually get an access denied message when trying to open the file.
They can still open other files on the shared drive so the problem
does not lie with the folder permissions. If the files is copied and
renamed in Windows Explorer on the hsaring machine it becomes
accessible again. Though Word and Excel files are being regularly
edited on the sharing they do not exhibit this problem.
Does any one know if there is a reason for this behaviour, whether
there is any sort of fix to stop it occurring, or if there isn't where
the information about a file being locked is kept in the WinXp system
and whether there is any way of clearing these locks - even manually
would be better than nothing.
Sorry this has been so long-winded.

- Windows XP Setup >> Usb keybord not workingIm having a bad time installing windows xp, I have a
computer in wich the mouse and keyboard are connected via
usb, when i run the installation from the bootable cd i
can access to it when it says press any key to boot from
cd, this shows that the BIOS is recognizing the keyboard,
but when i get into the installation menu the keyboard
doesnt respond, so there is no way to continue through
the installation, the computer doesnt have any serial
port, so there is no way to connect any different
keyboard other than the USB. What can i do to complete
the installation?

- Windows XP Setup >> New WinXP installed itself on H: driveMy wife has just installed WinXP Home on a new PC which had one raw
120gb hard drive and found it has set the 3 partitions she created as
H: (WinXP) I: (Apps) J: (Data), instead of the normal C:,D:,E:. Her
only other drive is a CD-RW/DVD combo which appears as D:.
3 removable drives have appeared, labelled E:,F:,G:.... but in fact she
has no removeable drives, these would seem to be the USB ports on the
motherboard!!
Any idea what might have gone wrong and how it might be fixed?
Could she use Partition Magic or a similar utility, since the XP Disk
Manager will not allow her to change the system drive letter?
Or is the best solution to start again, reinstall Win XP?
Thanks for any guidance

- Windows XP >> Useful commandOccassionally the question comes up about "When did my Windows
get originally installed". Learned tonight that there is a command prompt
based command, SystemInfo that returns that information, including the
hour/minute of installation.
Best to redirect the output to a text file to examine, such as:
Start, Run (Type) Cmd [Enter]
>SystemInfo >C:\Sysinfo.Txt
Thought I'd pass the information along.

Windows XP MovieMaker >> Beyond TV 3.5 vs SageTV 2.2 - which is better, to replace Windows Media Center Edition 2005?
I'm using a new Dell WinXP Media Center 2005, 3.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM
system, with Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4026.0, an NVIDIA GeForce
6800 video card, an Angel TV tuner card (has two tuners), and an SB
Audigy 2ZS Audio (D8CO) sound card.
I'd like to record old VCR tapes as well as current TV shows into my
computer, manipulate them using Movie Maker 2.1 and/or Ulead DVD Movie
Factory 4 Disc Creator Edition, and then burn them to DVD's.
However, Windows Media Center Edition 2005 only writes in its own
proprietary dvr-ms file format, plus it flags some programs as not
being allowed to be copied. So I need a software program that will do
everything MCE2005 will do, plus write files using more
commonly-shared file formats, readable by Movie Maker and Movie
Factory.
Beyond TV 3.5.3 (http://snipurl.com/f4n1) and SageTV Version 2.2
(http://snipurl.com/f4n3) seem to be the best contenders. What are the
strengths/weaknesses of each? Before purchasing either I'd greatly
appreciate all suggestions.
Thanks.

I have no insight on SageTV, but I use Beyond TV and love it. It gives you
total control of every aspect of recording, quality, format, etc... It is
very easy to use, and set up recordings. It has a great web interface that
can be accessed remotely, so you can start, stop or schedule recordings away
from home. you can watch recorded shows or live tv remotely also via the
web interface, so I can stream live tv to my PocketPC or my laptop and watch
TV anywhere I go in the house or yard. I can even stream the shows from my
work, so I have CableTV on my computer at work. it will allow you to keep
recorded programs indefinitely, or it will sump them after a set period of
time. all in all, a really fun program.

- Windows XP Security >> The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.I set security on all of our Win XP SP1 systems some time
ago and whenever I need to install MS Office I rename the
folder GroupPolicy to GroupPolicy.old, reboot and install

I might have done differently with this computer. I have

- Windows XP Security >> Domain and local Administrator does not have privilegesAs domain and local Administrator, I tried downloading Windows updates
including IE but only a few of the updates worked but not IE 7. I had
to create a user and grant Administrator rights and then only did it
allow me to update. Also System Restore does not work under Domain and
Local Administrator. I checked the security policy and Administrator
has rights for the most part across the board (including system restore
service). I also tried restarting the System Restore service but I
still get the message:
You do not have sufficient provileges to restore your system. Please
contact your administrator, or logout and log in again as an
administrator and try again.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP >> Automatic Updates/ MouseRecently, whenever I install an Automatic Update my mouse
stops working in the USB port. I am able to use a mouse
in the other port. I know this because I used my mouse
from work to troubleshoot. I suspect that the computer
sees it as a game controller because it "finds" a game
controller and installs it. I am able to do a "System
Restore" and get my mouse back but I would like to be
able to use the Updates.
Has anyone run into this problem and is there a fix? Are
the Automatic Updates really that useful? I appreciate
any help.
Sincerely,
Roger Dixon

- Windows XP Hardware >> Archos Mini HD and Unknown Device on USB 2.0 and XP HomeHi,
I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite A40-231 with XP Home. I have an
external Archos Mini HD (40 GB) that has USB 2.0. For some reason,
when I connect the HD to the laptop, I get a message stating that
there has been a failure and an unknown device is connected. I have
tried re-installing the drivers for the Archos but to no avail.
Further, I have been able to use various memory sticks on the machine
with no problems. Additionally, the MiniHD works fine on other
machines (the other machines however had only USB 1.1 ports). I cannot
figure out however why the Mini HD does not appear on my new machine
and I would appreciate any advice in this matter as it is quite
frustrating.
Many thanks, Jules

- Windows XP Support >> DVD/RW ProblemI have a Dell E510 that has a drive HL-DT-ST DVD+ - RW GWA 41648 drive.
I can put a program CD in the drive such as Windows disk and the drive
reads it. If I put a data disk that was written on another Dell and seen
by all Dells in the office, it can't see information on disk. If I try
to write as new data disk Windows keeps asking me to insert a blank
disk. Same thing if I ask it to erase or format the disk. What should I do?

saying that setup failed and the computer can't be

as a USB printer. however, it gives me an error message
that windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs

- Windows XP Network >> One computer connects to the internet, the other does not???Hi,
We have two laptops at home. We share a DSL connection
through a switch. However, one laptop always connects to
the internet, and the other one sometimes connects and
sometimes doesn't when we turn them on.
In both computers LAN connection seems to be connected.
The difference is that, in one computer's LAN conncetion
properties, TCP/IP is assigned by DHCP, and this computer
can connect to the internet; in the other computer TCP/IP
is assigned as automatic IP address, and this one cannot
access the internet.
What can the problem be? Please help us!
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Windows XP MCE 2005 boot problemsHello everybody,
Since briefly I've been experiencing severe troubles with my MCE box. More
specifically, it refuses to boot into windows...
This is what happens :
- The system completes POST without any problems
- The raid array is succesfully detected
- A menu appears stating that "Windows has been unproperly shutdown ..."
Whatever option I choose in the menu (safe mode, last known working config,
default, ...) always results in the system just starting boot all over
again. The windows boot screen appears briefly for a second or something, and
then the system just starts all over again.
I've tried the following :
- Verify the integrity of RAID array
- Run memtest
- BIOS reset
I've also tried booting with a live cd, and this works perfectly, so I
believe there is no hardware malfunction.
I'm running out of ideas, anyone know how I could fix this??
Greetz,
Robin L
