- Windows XP >> Logging off problemshey all. I am having trouble with logging off the user names on my desktop.
This all started last week when I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7. What
happens is that I go to Start, Log Off, and then hit Log off. But the
computer doesn't do anything. I took it to my local computer repair shop and
they told me it was fixed. When it came back tonight, I was able to log off
from the start menu only once. In order for me to log off, I have to go
through the Task Manager. What is wrong? My computer is 7 years old and
running Windows XP Professional SP2. Please help.

- Windows XP Security >> 'Puter ProblemsHello there...
I am having problems accessing stuff on my computer...
i.e. I don't have the appropriate permissions even though
I was logged on as administrator (even when logged on
under users with admin privelages). When I right-click "My
Computer" and select manage, don't have appropriate
permissions. I've tried booting into safemode and
performing tasks I still don't have the privelages
(admin). There's other problems i've been having as
well... For instance all the icons of the exeuctible files
show the icon when there is no icon specified... Then I
specify the icon and the proper icon appears... but when
the computer is restarted of the user is logged off, it
reverts to the "no icon" icon.
Another problem I've been having is with the command
prompt. When I click start, select run, and
type "command" I get the popup of the dos window, but the
problem is that any command that I type in there doesn't
respond. ie, ipconfig, netstat... the only command that it
responds to is "exit". Even if i type a command or
something that doesn't exist, it just repeats the same
line... here's a screen shot:

Thank you for your time and effort.

- Windows XP >> anyone know of a multi user temp/cookie/crap cleaner?ive had a geek squad MRI cd just for this purpose, as you start it up,
its got a gui that shows all the user accounts for the pc your on, and
lets you check which accounts you want cleaned, and what you want
cleaned on each account, like cookies, temp files ect...
as an network admin, this was invaluable, instead of logging into each
account and running a temp cleaner. i just wondered if there was
another proc out there that did this? or if anyone knew the name of
the proc thats on the geed squad cd that runs this, ive looked and i
cant tell what the name of it is.
i was making a windows xp PE live cd, and i wanted to have this sort
of utility on it.
or possibly would anyone know how to make a .bat file that did this
for me, then i could just add it to the live distro.

- Windows XP Network >> TCP/IP networking issuesHello...
When I try to ipconfig /renew my wireless adapter to get
a new ip address from my DHCP server it gives me an error
saying something like "... can not perform operation on
something that is not a socket." So I have been looking
things up related to windows xp tcp/ip problems and
found -- Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 299357 --
which states to reset tcp/ip do the following command:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
It then goes on to show what that resetlog.txt log file
should look like which has a whole bunch of stuff in it
and then at the end it states <completed>
When I do the above command it returns successfully from
the command prompt with no errors but when I look at the
log file ALL that is in there is <completed> without the
other normal log messages.
Any help on this would be hugely appreciated because I'm
stumped on why it's doing this and how I can fix tcp
without re-installing all of windows!... :)
Thanks in advance...

- Windows XP Network >> IP ConflictI have an odd IP Conflict. In one office I have a laptop and a desktop
computer for some reason the IT that was here before me has the laptop set up
to only use wireless connection even when docked, he then gave the same IP to
the desktop that the laptop onboard NIC had. (this I did not find out till
the other day) The laptop was having issues that is when I noticed that even
when docked it was running on wireless so I enabled the onboard NIC this then
caused a conflict with the desktop comptuer the inetern uses. Now to my
issue.
I changed the IP of the laptop however the desktop still got the ip conflict
so I then changed the IP of the desktop. Once both systems were up and
running on the network I decided to change the desktop back to the old IP as
soon has you do that it gives you a conflict however if you try to ping the
old IP it times out. Can the old IP be stuck someplace in the computer
itself? I thougth maybe it was still on the laptop so I undocked the laptop
and still had the issue on the desktop. I uninstalled and reinstalled the
NIC on the desktop with the exact same results.

Ok, I cant figure this out. It keeps on saying this I pick any option and it
keeps going on and on the same thing over..
Here is what it says after I click Custom or Express..
Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:
Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem
This is a Acer Laptop Windows Xp Home.. Build 2600.. And thanks guys! How
could i fix this? I wanna update my laptop!

See if this helps::
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32.exe wuauserv.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuweb.dll
regsvr32.exe iuengine.dll
You should get a successful message after each one.

I copyed those files to the system32 folder.. Where the others were.. It now
says this
iuengine.dll was loadedm but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found.
This file can not be registered!
Ahh this sucks.. Could I borrow XPHOME from a friend and use my cd would
that work? Or what else can I try to fix this :(

Don't worry about that message. It is expected.
That's a typo which unfortunately is being perpetuated in here.
iuengine.dll cannot be registered but iuctl.dll may be.

After try all you suggested I uninstalled service pack 4 from my win
2000 ibm thinkpad and I use de version4 from the windows update site,
then I reinstalled everything ( but not service pack 4 yet). Then I
reinstall service pack 4. Everything works well since that, even the
new version6 of that site ... good luck!

He suggests the following, open notepad and paste following:
%windir%\system32\net.exe stop bits
%windir%\system32\net.exe stop wuauserv
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\atl.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\jscript.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\softpub.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll

%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\wuweb.dll
%windir%\system32\net.exe start bits

- Windows XP >> Corrupt system file in Korean XP installationI have a Korean laptop running Korean edition of Windows XP. It has
become unbootable citing corupt or missing
windows/system32/config/system file. Unfortunately, I am not in Korea
and do not have access to the original Korean XP installation disk. I
have tried to repair the file using the recovery console by booting to
an English XP edition - backed up, deleted and copied from the repair
folder files; sam, security, system, software, and default. This did not
accomplish anything -though I did brush up on my dos commands.
Is there anyway to use an English edition XP cd to repair this?
Ultimately, I don't want to lose the data or the Korean installation.
Any suggestions?

- Windows XP Setup >> shared drive not workingFrom: Michael Vestel

RE: shared drive not working
I've got 2 computers, one in an nt 4.0 domain, the other
in a workgroup. Both run winxp pro. I'd like each to be
able to share the others' administrative (C$) share. The
domain host happily shares its C$ with the workgroup
host, but the workgroup host doesn't do it.
I'm not even sure that sharing is properly enabled on the
workgroup host. There is no sharing "hand" on its C
drive, but it claims to be sharing (trying to manually
create a C$ says C$ is already being shared). From the
domain host, I'm presented with a login upon attempted
sharing, but the only account listed is the Guest, it's
greyed out, and the local administrator password doesn't
let me in.
Sincerely, Michael

- Windows XP >> Boot ProblemHi,
I have a broken enter key on my laptop's keyboard and my wireless keyboard
doesn't work until windows boots. The issue is that I get to the safe mode
menu and then cannot select the last known good configuration option or safe
mode option and if I let the timer run down the laptop reboots and I have the
same problem. Is there anything I can do other than replace the keyboard for
the laptop itself? I have already tried a normal boot disk but if there are
any other disks anyone could recommend that would be brilliant.

to the Fred account and it has power scheme A and then I switch user to =
Wilma and it has a different power scheme then the one of the power =
schemes gets messed up. Is there a way to lock the power schemes so that =
when it is changed on one account that it gets changed on the other =
accounts?
Thanks,
Mike

My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition. Recently
everytime I access my files etc I get the
message 'Explorer.exe needs to close, sorry for the

- Windows XP Setup >> Re: Printer SharingDear all,
I have a PC running on Win XP and connected a printer
using USB. I want to share the printer on my network.
However, other PCs running on Win 98 cannot see the
Printer. I heared from someone that Some network setting
must be performed to handle the problem particularly. What
is the setting I should perform?

- Windows XP >> Application windows rapidly changing from window to full screenSeveral applications (Internet Explorer and Control Panel for example), after
being opened, begin to very rapidly switch between window and full screen
modes. I estimate the rate of switching at 2 to 3 times a second. Does
anyone know what is causing this? It began suddenly. Virus checks with
current definitions are negative.
