- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Restoring default XP SP2 registry keysI was not able to install a new version of an engineering software package
because something was left behind in the registry from the older version that
I had removed. So I stupidly deleted a couple of registry keys that looked
related to the software without documenting them (not just the tags, but the
folders with the long alphanumeric strings). Now when I try to install the
software it gives me an error. I ran system restore but the problem is still
there (I don't think it restored the registry keys I deleted). Is there a
way to install all of the default Windows SP2 registry keys or to download
and reinstall SP2 in general?
Thanks!

Can I grab that file from another computer and replace
it? I know it's an important one. It says the other
files are healed.
Also can't open task manager. Have done proceedures
reccomended to other people for this; no change.

- Windows XP Support >> Got Alemon Trojan... deleted but can't change wallpaperGood evening.
My system was infected with the Alemon trojan. I was able to delete it.
All subsequent virus scans are showing up clean. This program changed my
wallpaper to an .html file. I deleted the file, however now I just get a
white background. I'm unable to change my wallpaper to anything else. I've
looked at several instructions, but don't find the registery entries they are
talking about.
Can anyone provide me with some help on how I can change my wallpaper again.
Thanks.

- Windows XP Update >> XP SP 2 Access DeniedI am getting an "access denied" message when I try to install Windows XP
Service Pack 2 on several PCs in our company. I followed the instructions in
KB Article 307410, but I still get "access denied" about half-way through the
SP2 installation.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> VPN seems to use Internet DNS before using VPN DNS serversWe have a split-brain DNS setup for one of our servers. This works fine as far as Internet clients getting a DNS resolution that is different than our internal clients.
We also have users who establish a VPN connection to our network. After a VPN connection is established, the VPN client uses the DNS servers from the Internet connection instead of the DNS servers from the VPN connection. Actually, it looks like the VPN client first queries the Internet DNS servers, then if that fails, it queries the VPN DNS servers.
How can I force a VPN connection to first use the DNS servers that are associated with the VPN connection instead of the DNS servers that are associated with the Internet connection?

- Windows XP Support >> need some advanced registry recovery tips...Leave it to windows' automatic disk checking schemes to screw everything
up...
I just performed a routine restart, since it had been a few weeks, and
certain things were starting to become sluggish. Overall though, there was
really nothing wrong with the overall operation of my system.
As XP booted (i have XP pro SP1 btw), it went into the scandisk routine for
C: and I wasn't paying enough attention to stop it in time. It was
relatively uneventful, removing only one bad file and recovering one orphan
(allegedly). Thereafter XP booted again normally until I went to log in;
here I recieved a message claiming (and i need to paraphrase a bit), "your
registry has been recovered from a saved version". uh-oh.
It then did something i haven't seen before (at least, not exactly). The
login screen eventually disappeared to reveal my usual desktop, but stopped
there. It loaded no icons, no taskbar or systray. the HD grinding stopped
soon enough, and it just sat there. So far I've timed this behavior at 5
minutes. I was able to bring up task manager, which reported nothing
out-of-the-usual (other than very few programs running), except no
Explorer.exe -- I couldn't even launch it manually. I restarted with "last
good configuration" (but without high hopes), same result. The weirdest
part -- It even behaves this way now as i bring it up in safe mode. It's
currently just sitting there. I can bring up a command window fine, and if
i do "run" through task manager I can browse the whole computer, but i can't
"open" a folder.
My #1 theory at this point is that the "registry recovery" buggered it --
and I haven't had to deal with this kinda thing manually for a while.
Usually with clients, where all they have of value is some saved e-mail that
i can back up easily, i just wipe the HD and/or reinstall XP, but in my case
I'd prefer to save that for a last-ditch-scenario. Can someone step me
through doing some advanced registry recovery? I know what I'm doing, but
right now I just forget how to do it or where to look for
resources/instructions.
Thanks in advance for any help.
~Mike

user the old fashioned way (control panel). BUT I have access to the command
prompt (run), but I need to know if I can enter the program name that will
allow me to create a new user account ?

saved it to my flash drive and tried to install it on my computer. I tried
doing it with add new programs in control panel but it says i need to click
