- Windows XP Update >> Windows Vista Keeps Offering Me the Same 27 UpdatesNo matter how many times I check for updates in Windows Vista (Home Premium)
on a brand new Toshiba laptop, Vista continues to offer me th esame 27
updates available for installation. I always elect to install the updates
and I let the machine reboot like 5-6 times and wait (about an hour) for it
to finish. However, when it's done, it still offers me the same 27 pending
updates. What's going on here?

- Windows XP >> Sob story - help!I had aproblem with XP after years of trouble free running - just kept
getting the BSOD every time when booting. To cut a long story short, I
decided it must be some sort of corruption on the HDD, so I reinstalled XP
with a formatting of the c: partition.
However, even that gives the BSOD when I try to boot even though it
installed OK!
I've tried MEMTEST, and that looks OK.
The CPU temp is OK.
I have a RAID setup with a c: partition (system and reformatted) and d:
untouched from previous install.
All BIOS settings are at default, and basically nothing has changed from the
setup that was working perfectly for some time.
What could be happening? I'm tearing my hair out - especially as I've lost
some critical data!

- Windows XP Security >> safemodeI have the same problem with the administrator account as many others. From reading some of the responses to other peoples questions I need to start my computer in safe mode. How do I do this? I tried pressing f8 as one person suggested in a different answer but nothing happened. Ctrl-Alt-Delete doesnt seem to get me to safe mode either. Please help me!

- Windows XP Hardware >> os on 2 drives?I had a 60g Max drive. I installed a 160G Seagate drive. I used the Seagate
software to move everything to from the 60G to the 160G. Everything looked
like it worked fine. About a year later, I decided I wanted to wipe the 60G
clean and use it for backing up. I wanted to test to make sure the 60G was
not part of any program, so I disconnected the 60G and booted up. The
Windows xp prof o/s was different. My desktop, settings... When I connected
the 60G back, windows worked fine.
What is wrong? How do I find out what files are still on the 60G that are
being used, and how do I move them to the 160G?
Thanks, Jeff

- Windows XP Support >> XP Home updateI am having trouble with KB928366, for .net1.1
I have followed the instructions for an answer I got a few days ago, which
suggested I remove .net1.1 and then reinstall it.
I cant remove it because it says that the "installation source is not
available" and it wont install using the download, saying "installation
failed contact the supplier"
The updates still exist in my system tray, and every time I shut the machine
down it tells me there is something about to install, but of course it sits
for a while then shuts off.
Any idea what I should try next

- Windows XP Support >> My sound scratch.Sorry, if I have some bad English :p
Well, when I'm playing a song, or my computer makes a noice, the sounds make
some funny things.
"I'm clo-o-osing the-e go-oo-d da-am-n doo-or"
When I have a fast internet connection, then there's nothing, but like now,
when I'm having a slow connection or none, then it's very bad.
And I have just formated my computer. It didn't help.
What can I do?

causing problems and i had to delete it . Now i want to set it up again but
can't figure out how i did it first time round. Anyone?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Keep soundtrack & video timelines together when inserting new videOne problem I have in WMM is when I have made detailed edits to the audio
timeline and then go back and drop in more video. I need a way to tell the
application to keep my audio track aligned with the video track, even when I
drop in new video toward the beginning of the timeline. As it is now, if I
drop in new video at the beginning of the show, I have to go back and
manually re-align the audio with the video because it all gets out of sync.
Does this make any sense? The only workaround I can devise is to just not do
any work on the audio track until after all video has been put into the
show, but that kind of defeats the point of nonlinear editing. i'd like to
be able to just use the mouse to select a segment of video and audio,
right-click it, and say "keep these in sync" and know what whatever I drop
onto the timeline before this segment wouldn't push apart my audio/video.

Windows XP Update >> KB835732 Install Fails
Hi,
W2K, SP4 all updates installed except KB835732 because it fails from the
windows update site. I downloaded the patch and tried installing from a
local copy with the ZoneAlarm firewall and Norton AntiVirus 2005 turned off,
logged in as Administrator, and I get an "Access Denied" message after a
bunch of file copying. Log file below. Can anybody help? What access is
denied? Thanks, Dave

Try a search?
First it will help to have the hexadecimal equivalent of that code.
To do that open Calc.exe, make sure its view is Scientific,
then copy that string including the sign and paste it in.
(If you don't include the sign, press F9 after pasting just
the absolute value of the error code into the Calculator's
input box.) Then press F5. Yielding:
FFFFFFFF80004004
There is high-order bit propagation because the default word size
in Calculator is QWord which you could truncate with F2
but now you know that the error code is also known as 80004004
Hex error codes are often reported with a prefix of 0x too.
So let's combine all that information in an OR expression
and search with Google:
http://www.google.com/search?q=80004004%20OR%200x800004004%20%20site%3Amicrosoft.com&qt_s=Search&lr=&sa=N&tab=gw
(Google web search for
80004004 OR 0x800004004 site:microsoft.com
)
Hmm... I don't think that this is where the problem started.
Look in your log to see if something happened before that.
Ah...

So let's try another search:
Aha...
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/deployment/winupdte.mspx
(Google web search for
"access denied" GlobalRegistryChanges site:microsoft.com
)
<extract>
[ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install]
AddReg=Product.Add.Reg
Identifies the section that contains registry keys to add during the installation.
In this case, the entry references the [Product.Add.Reg] section,
which contains the keys to be added.
</extract>
It turns out that your "access denied" isn't referred to usefully
by the document. Instead though I think we could take the word
permissions and find the sort of thing that that message will be
about, e.g.:
<extract type="table row">
Error Message: Failed to add registry entry.
Explanation: The user installing the software update does not have
the right permissions on a particular registry key.
Solution: Check the installation log for more details on the specific registry key.
</extract>
Good luck with the solution. <eg> Although I would at least
check to see if there are any other .log files which are updated
at the same time as the one you extracted these messages from.
In any case it appears that whatever account you were using
to do the update does not have sufficient permissions to add
a registry subkey or perhaps that particular branch is protected
somehow.
There are actually some related tips in the WUv4 troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
but I don't think that they are general enough for this problem
because they always show a specific key to "navigate" to in RegEdit.
FWIW I would try to find out exactly which key is encountering
the problem first. Using RegMon while recreating the problem
might be the easiest way to find it. It would also clearly show you
the account which was involved. At the same time you could
be running FileMon to find out exactly where the .inf file is
which contains the problem instructions. (FYI both tools are
freeware from SysInternals.)
Good luck

- Windows XP >> Windows shutting downIt's got to where on a daily basis now, a small window
will pop up and tell me that I must save information
because my computer will be rebooting itself in....and
then it counts down the seconds. What is the problem?

- Windows XP Support >> Unable to get XP to refresh directory when inserting a new CDROMWindows XP Home edition (5.1 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158: sp2) on a HP a830n.
About 10-20% of the time, when I put a new CD into the CD-ROM, explorer
still shows the content of the last CD. It does not read the new CD.
Browsers, 3rd party application, even the DOS prompt still returns the
content of the previous CD. Refresh does nothing. F5 doesn't help. Even
trying to 'eject' the previous CD and then putting in the new one doesn't
help. So far, the only solution I have is to reboot the system, obviously
not a solution at all. And an impossible solution when the problem shows up
while trying to install a multiple CD program -- the program asks for the 2nd
CD, I put it in, but Windows keeps telling the program that it's still the
1st CD.
HELP! I contacted HP support, but all they did was try to get me to reboot
the box.

- Windows XP Support >> Transferring Windows XP to new computerI will be upgrading my computer at home and want to use my current hard drive
with Windows XP Pro (OEM version) in the new one.
I have searched the newsgroup and it appears that because it is an OEM
version I may not be able to change computers.
Does this mean I have to buy another version of Windows XP?
Can I install the OEM version to the new computer's hard drive and then
transfer the rest of the hard drive? What would happen when I had to register
it again?
Help.
Thank you.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> XP config - error messageTHANKS IN ADVANCE !
error message :
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows\system32\config\system
you can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original Setup CD
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair
I have purchased a Toshiba Sattelite 1135 laptop with Windows XP Home "imaged"
on the system by Toshiba. I have the 'Windows Authentication" sticker on the bottom of the laptop with the CD Key code. However Toshiba says they cannot send me the Original WIN XP Home CD version.
I have tried to use a different WIN XP CD but it this system does not recognize the CD, then loops back to the error message. I tried "safe mode" and no luck. It seems the system only wants to recognize only the particular Win XP CD on my PC (?) If I buy a new version will I wipe all the huge volume of data on my PC ?
... any suggestions GREATLY APPRECIATED ... Pat Martin

- Windows XP >> No Network Connections, Network Wizard, Etc.Hi!
Seems I have lost the LAN network connection I had set up on one computer.
Start Menu shows Network Connections as (Empty). I thought I could just
"Add" a new network connection, but apparently that Wizard must had died
along with my LAN entry. (Could have been a result of a recent MS Update,
but I really don't know (ie, wasn't paying much attention). How do I
restore these vital files/services?
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP Setup >> missing Operating SystemAfter installing a new hard drive on an older computer -
this computer I have already run WindowsXP professional.
It will not boot from the hard drive or the cdRom from a
cd purchased from the book store of a university which I
am a student. It keeps giving me the error -"Missing
Operating System"
I am running out of ideas to fix this problem..

- Windows XP Network >> Win98 PC cannot access XP pro shares on domainMy domain consists of a mixture of Win XP, 2000 and legacy
Win 98 pcs. Most seem to be able to connect to shared
directory's without problems but a laptop that has been
returned from overseas and is now connected to the domain
cannot access shares on the XP/2000 machines with the
exception of the servers. When attempting to connect to a
share or shared printer he is presented with a prompt to
enter password for IPC$ share. Appart from connecting to
shares everything else seems ok, antivirus signatures
update ok and the outlook client can connect to the
exchange server.
I have tested the user account on a different 98 pc and it
works ok.
I have removed and reinstalled LAN drivers, file and print
sharing and TCP/IP settings.
On a host 2000 PC I have checked the netlogon service is
running and dropped the LSA restrict annonymous registry
setting down to 0. I have created a share with everyone
full control for share permissions and security.
I have checked that the ICF service is not running on a XP
machine.
I have seen some articles on the web regarding net use
with the user switch. Is this to used on the client pc or
host. The 98 client doesn't recognise /user: as a switch
but the 2000/XP pcs do. Net use \\pcname\ipc$ will give a
prompt for password but I don't know what password it
requires, I have tried local administrator account and
logged on user, even network administrator.
Any ideas why 1 pc should be affected and others connect
without problems.
TIA
Regards
Paul

- Windows XP Support >> Win XP, NAT, DSL and File SharingYup, this is a common question raised, but this one is slightly different as I
hope someone out there can just read through what I write and confirm or correct
my understanding. Also, any names of systems, workgroups, user accounts, etc are
used for generic reasons so others can learn too, and the set-up does not use
any default names for security (eg, not on the Workgroup workgroup).

Right, I have two machines, A and B. A is a desktop machine, B is a laptop. Both
run Window XP Home SP2 with all the updates fully installed and working great. A
(desktop) is connected to a router by wire (ethernet cable). B (laptop) is
connected via a wireless connection to the router, set up with passwords,
encryption and MAC filtering (to keep the unwanted connections out). The router
is a DSL/cable router with built in hardware firewall and NAT (network address
translation). It connects to the internet.
Now, I wish to allow B to see the entire hard disks of A using File and Printer
Sharing. On looking into this, it is a bad idea when connected direct to the
Internet. However, I have found a Scope button in the Exceptions tab of the
Windows XP firewall, which I can limit only to the local IP addresses only
(which are not likely to change).
So.......
Can I do the following safely with no trouble outside?
1. Enable File and Print Sharing.
2. Change the scope settings to only allow it to be open for my known computers
on my local network.
3. Using this, share the root of all harddrives.
Any help would be appreciated.
