- Windows XP Support >> Screensaver turns off after 60 secondsI have just completed a clean install of XP and it is now fully updated with
SP2 etc.
The only problem I have is that the screensaver (any XP screensaver)
activates after the allotted time but then reverts to the desktop after
60seconds.
What could be causing this? It's driving me mad.

I did try to recover from corrupted registry but didn't find system registry
in the
"c:\windows\repair\system" and now I can't log in neither on windows or in
the recovery console anymore. Because I have to type a password that I don't
have because I didn't assign any password to the administator account.
Does windows has a standard password for the administrator account?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Undoing device association w/specific program?I did a bonehead thing when I was troubleshooting a problem recently, w/my
new Canon SD550 camera connecting to the Canon software in Windows. When I
first connected the camera, I got the usual dialog box of all the various
programs on my machine that could connect to the camera and download pictures
(Adobe Photoshop Elements, ACDSee, the Canon CameraWindow, etc.).
The bonehead part comes in when I checked the "Always perform this action"
w/the "Canon CameraWindow" selected. Now when I connect the camera, the Canon
CameraWindow always starts, never giving me a choice of which program I
actually want to use. D'oh! Yes, I know it's doing exactly what it's supposed
to do. Problem is, I want the dialog box of choices back, and I don't know
how to get it.
W/a simple file association, I know you can go into My Computer>Tools>Folder
Options>File Types tab, and scroll down until you find the file type you want
to change the association to. Trouble is, the camera is of course a hardware
device, and I have no idea where to look for the magic place to undo what I
did. It is *not* in the File Types list.
I've hunted thru the Registry, scoured the KB, and have simply run out of
ideas. Can anyone tell me how to undo a device association to a particular
program?

i boot from cd and get 3 choices :
1. to set up sp now press enter
2. to repair awindows xp installationusing rcovery console
press R
3. to quit setup without installing xp press F3
Where do I go from here?

- Windows XP >> System has Internet, but can't browse Lan...?Howdy,
We have six systems behind a router.
All can browse Internet, and all but one can browse the Lan
reading, and writing, to one another.
One system (an XP box - all others are Win 2000 Pro) can
browse Internet, but cannot browse our Lan.
When, from that machine, I attempt to explore the workgroup,
nothing shows up. When I attempt to ping other systems, (say
one called "Joe" I get the error: "Could not find host Joe."
If I attempt to ping the offending system from another on
the Lan, I get "Unknown host Sue."
I should also add that when I go into that system's Control
Panel | Windows Firewall it shows that the Firewall is OFF.
But, it I go into Control Panel | Security Center, it shows
Firewall ON and explains that Norton Internet Worm
Protection is activated. (I have no idea what that Norton
product is, and cannot find it on the system in any case.)
And finally, all this is new. That is, this one system had
been able to browse the Lan properly. I just discovered the
problem because we had it set to backup to another system on
the Lan, but new it is generating backup errors because it
can no longer see that other system.
I would welcome any assistance on this hassle...

- Windows XP >> Extended support for XP is a joke just read the fine print.Just days before launching Windows Vista, Microsoft is pretending to
extend the support lifecycle for the consumer versions of its currently
shipping Windows XP system.
Microsoft is now providing five years of "mainstream" support, plus
five years of "extended support" for XP Media Center and XP Home
Edition.
Consequently, consumer versions of XP are now covered under mainstream
support through April 2009, and under extended support through April
2014.
The rip off iof this deal is in mainstream and extended support, the
difference is the way Microsoft treats non-security-focused hotfixes.
Under mainstream support, Microsoft provides these kinds of hotfixes
for free. Under extended, customers are required to pay for
non-security hotfixes and must sign an "extended hotfix agreement,
purchased within 90 days of mainstream support ending."
not so good news for all of those with older or lower powered computers
with Windows XP Home or MCE installed. Those computers will never see
Vista because they can't run it to it's full potential. So this will
only keep those older or lower powered hardware running for another 7
years. I consider 15 to 20 years at least a reasonable life for a
computer before it either breaks down or becomes so obsolete in that it
is no longer no capable of ordinary tasks with then current
applications.
Being out in the real world and still finding people running Win98, I
can guarantee WinXP will probably be around a lot longer than that.
With Vista's hardware requirements being so high, all these lower end
computers that will still be around need to run something. It seems
Microsoft has learned just how long people will use older technology
that still works(as well as any M$ software works) - which makes
abandoning these customers so sickening.
The differences between what's covered by mainstream and extended
support are detailed below. Basically, you have to pay for real support
during the extended support period.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Maximum memory allowed for Windows XPI recently purchased an Asus motherboard that is supposed
to allow up to 4 GB of ram. However, I was told by a
memory chip manufacturer (Crucial), that Windows XP
applications cannot utilize any amount of memory over 2
GB. Does anyone have an answer for this? I have never
heard that going over 2GB in RAM would not work. Thank

- Windows XP Support >> Error when trying to connect to XP from RD ClientI have one laptop (A) and two desktop computers (B) + (C), and all are
running XP Pro (SP2 and updated with MS updates)
Suddenly I got this problem which makes me unable to connect to one of the
desktops computer.
I used RD client on the laptop (A) to connect to my desktop computers, but
now the RD client gives some problem when I try to connect to desktop (B) â??
The laptop can still connect to desktop (C) and several other computer.
When I attempt to connect to desktop computer (B) I get to the login screen,
enter the name and password, then the RD Client go black and nothing happens.
I can cancel the RD Client on the laptop, but the desktop computer is not
responding and the screen is black and only showing the hour-glass. I have to
reboot the desktop compute (B) by pressing the switch ï??.
In the Event Log on the desktop computer (B) there is only one error
information, which is for the TermDD process:
"The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream
and has disconnected the client."
It has Event ID 50.
I have been trying to find information and help to solve this issue for over
a month with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. So if you need
more information please do not hesitate to ask.

- Windows XP Support >> Desktop error/issueSometime yesterday my desktop went completely blank. I still can open
programs and the task bar is still there, but there are no icons and i can't
put any on there. Is there a way to reset/fix the desktop? (i can still
open the desktop folder that has all the files)

I get an error message after the encoding
process saying..
"Error:\nCannot connect TRF"
and this prevents the burning process.
Can anyone help me with this?

Of course I will, but the prospect of finding
the relevant site to post a question and then
waiting weeks for a reply is somewhat
daunting!
Seeking advice from principals is like Alice
chasing the White Rabbit down a hole.
I have had much experience with Symantec,
Nero, Roxio, etc etc, but little
satisfaction.
The idea of these software houses publishing
a list of error messages - and what they
mean - seems to have escaped them. Also some
glossary, and dictionary of what the devil
each field means!

Windows XP >> Error in Video-burning software.
This free product, DVD Shrink, was removed from typical internet sources
about a year ago. The author no longer pursues making a better version as
he has in the past. All due to pressures from the moviemaking industry.
The best place for help for such problems is a DVD video-related newsgroup.

been told to back up my system and reinstall my program,
but I can't seem to make my backup go into my cd-rw or my
cd rom drives. I don't want to lose any of my files. I
also tried to do a partial install and it hung on the
first phase for hrs. collecting information. I also have
two hard drives. What options are available? Please
help. I can only shut it down with the tower button, and
I need to get my RESTART back to work.

Lotus Approach it said that there were some known errors
with compatibility with Xp Pro and Lotus Approach program.
Is there an upgrade from Lotus to fix this or Im I S.O.L.?
I have my company's database on Lotus approach and it
would take a lot to change to something new, unless it can
just merge together with the new database program.

I'm changing my computer and was in the process of moving all my data from
the old to the new view a firewire network. I couldn't get this to work
today so ended up unplugging my old hard drive and plugging in into my new
computer so i could copy the files across.
I was an idiot, because when i did that i found that the files were in a
user account so i could not access them from my new windows XP. (My old
computer is also XP with the files stored as NTFS)
So i plugged the hard drive back into my old computer so that i could move
them to a guest account - but this time when i booted up the old computer
windows won't load! The hard drive must have been changed somehow when i
plugged it into the new computer...
More specifically,windows boots up, but i don't get any accounts to log into
at the end of the boot up sequence, just the pale blue screen with a windows
logo.
How do i save my data?

- Windows XP Setup >> application errorI keep getting this message "IEXPLORE.EXE" , application error, software
exception(oxOeedfade), location ox7c812a56. Also it says " instruction
oxo25b3e66, reference memory oxo2783ado", to terminate program click ok. That
does not end the program, it keeps putting more of the same message on my
screen, even trying to terminate with task manager does not work, I have to
unplug my computer in order to get this and the multiplying messages off my
screen. It's very frustrating and I don't know what any of it means or how
to fix the problem.

machine. "All of a sudden" she can no longer purchase
anything online. She uses the Web through Juno (which of
course inherits it's browser information through IE).
When she goes to a page that requires a purchase, she is
told that "the page cannot be displayed." I use Windows
2000 Professional and since I can purchase online through
IE, I made her IE settings match mine. No help. She also
cannot do the Windows Update (Direct X or Active X issue
when she tries). Any settings that anyone knows about
that should be corrected? She must have done something at
some point because she used to be able to purchase
online. I don't believe she ever tried the Windows Update
so that might not have worked since the get go--she has
Dell with 128MB RAM; nothing else looked unusual.

Sending a screen message like GO TO BED or being able to
shut her Window ME PC down. My two PC are connected via a
wireless Access point and both share a cable modem. I
have no problems with file and printer share, I have been
blocked from her Hotmail sessions and do not like mess
about with the Linksys A/P settings.I have considered to
use a VNC program but that would be accessible to her and
can only run as a service because my O/S is XP.

The last time I installed Live Messenger was a few months ago.
I installed it today and the same problem occurs. After logging in, (or
during the logging in final process before it gets to load your contacts),
LSASS.EXE goes to 100% CPU usage and nothing can stop it apart from ending
the Live Messenger task from the Task Manager.
For a 13kb program, LSASS is very annoying. I have checked and am not
infested with any Sasser or other virus.
Is there anything one can do?
