My understanding is this:
I create a user for the workgroup computers that exists on the computer
trying to acess these files......this profile name has the SAME password or
am i not able to duplicate passwords?
For example, if userone wants to access computers 2 and 3 in the workgroup,
does username need the same name (userone) on all other machines and have the
same password or same name but different password?
I'm not 100% clear on this and want to get the right advice. Thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> WorkFlow ErrorI just got a new Gateway computer and was trying to use
an activation CD for my broadband service. Every time
the program gets to the point of checking system
requirements and tries to check the CPU speed, it hangs
and then gives the Error Reporting Message "WorkFlow
Harness Executable Application has encountered a problem
and needs to close." It also gives the option of sending
the error to Microsoft. I contacted the broadband
provider (Road Runner) and was able to get my internet
and email connections set up without using the CD, but
they said that it was highly unusual to get Error
Reporting messages from a brand new computer and
suggested I contact Gateway. I did that and showed them
the problem, and they said it is a Microsoft problem and
I need to contact them. Microsoft seems to not be so
easy to get direct help from. Actually, I am not having
any system problems as a result of this and I don't see
the error again unless I try to use that CD. What I'm
trying to figure out is if this a systemic problem that I
need to address, and if so how? The other thing I think
is unusual is that if I look into the details of the
error report it says CPU: AMD and that the operating
system is Windows NT 5.1. My computer is a Pentium 4
operating on Windows XP. I don't know much about
Microsoft Error reporting so I'm not sure where it gets
that information from or even if I'm reading it correctly
since I'm not an IT person. Can anyone help?

- Windows XP Network >> Sudden wireless broadband problems??Recently installed a linksys wirelss-G broadband router in my house. Needed a
wireless network receiver on the desktop, so bought a USB 2.0 expansion card
and a USB wireless receiver to plug into it. Amazingly, it all installed
without a hitch. I intstalled the PCI card, plugged in the USB wireless
adapter and plugged in the linksys router to the back of my NTL set top box
and it all worked - for weeks.
Then I started to get the odd occaision where the network connection would
be 'unavailable'. I was able to sort this by unplugging hte USB adapter &
pluggin it back in. XP would recognise it and it would be fine. Now that
doesn't even work.
I know its not the linksys, as my other wirelss PC works fine.
So, how can I figure out if it is the USB wirelss adapter or the PCI USB 2.0
kit or is it XP itself that needs a kick up t eh backside???

- Windows XP Setup >> How to access another machine's NTFS drive as an external USB driveI've been trying to fix a Win2K machine with disk errors. I thought I
should be able to hook up the drive via an external USB adapter or
enclosure, but I can't get a "handle" on it. I can see the disk in Disk
Management, and it's whirring away. I can even get Ghost to start cloning
it, although it gave up the Ghost (ouch) when it found 64 bad sectors (is
that a lot?).
I'd been told that all I needed to do was take ownership of the drive from
my XP admin account and then set suitable permissions, but the disk hasn't
been allocated a drive letter and I can't find any options other than
removing the partition. Any ideas gratefully received.

- Windows XP >> Restore event on external driveGreetings.
Now that I have a full system restoration program, I was wondering if the
external drive files would be affected. The reason I'm asking is my concern
of files no longer being identified as when I use System Restore feature to
an earlier point. Since System Restore is monitoring all hard drives, plus
external drive, would restoring to an earlier time also affect the external
drive's files? If so, I would think a full system restore would also not
identify files created after that point. I'm reluctant to keep my external
drive on to find out. Thank you.

Windows XP >> bootable CDs
What CDs are you referring to? Are you using the correct terminology Bill?
Bootable CDs are generally a diagnostic tool or an operating system. To be
bootable, there has to be a routine included in the CD itself. CD burning
programs such as NERO can be used to create a bootable CD.

My XP is an OEM product. Therefore I don't have an xp install disk. I
know I can generate one with winn32.exe but I can use one of the 5 disks my
manufacturer sent me. The thing is only the 1st is bootable. The other four
aren't. I also have a copy of an old win98 OS I saved onto a disk but it
isn't boot like the original win98 OS boot disk was.

Windows XP >> bootable CDs
Couple of things : Look at the OEM provided disks for a folder titele
"I386" - this is the Windows "CD" - the setup file hsould permit you to
install XP if necessary.
Also OEMs recovery systems usuall allow you to only reinstall the OS - when
the first: CD boots you should be presented with options as to restoring the
OS drivers and applications of both.
For a disk to boot 0 system files (Ms-dos.Sys, Ios.sys, command.com) are
required. The system files boot a disk to the "C" prompt - to boot
automatically to a setup file requires an auto.inf file.

Ok now we're getting somewhere. So I don't go to I386 and run
winnt32.exe then bu a setup file? THe command interrpreter command.com and
io.sys msdos.sys (on the old dos stuff anyway) must be there I know. But
what is the auto.inf format?

Windows XP >> bootable CDs
The first one that is bootable is undoubtedly the recovery or XP disk. The
others are probably to be used once you have the system installed and are
not required to be bootable. For example, Dell sends an OS disk that is
bootable, a resource CD containing drivers that is not and various other
non-bootable CDs for the DVD drive, software burning, etc.
W98 CDs were not bootable but some W98 recovery CDs (Compaq for example)
were. With the regular CDs, one used a floppy boot disk to install the
system. If you don't have a floppy drive on your current PC, you can make a
bootable CD using Nero burning software

Some OEMs do ship bootable XP install CDs. Some use restore CDs. Some use
a recovery partition (bad plan).
It's *not* a given that an OEM system will not have a bootable install CD.
> I know I can generate one with winn32.exe
I'm not so sure about that, or that that is the name you meant to type. I
suspect you're thinking of winnt32.exe, which is the Windows-based version
of XP Setup.
Winnt.exe is the command you'd run if you booted with a diskette with CD
drivers. IIRC neither of these have the ability to make a bootable CD.
> but I can use one of the 5 disks my manufacturer sent me. The thing is
> only the 1st is bootable. The other four aren't.
And that's probably because they don't need to be. They would be inserted
as needed during a system restore, by which point anything needed for the
restore to run was in memory or already installed on disk.
I expect that you'd find that most of the contents of those four CDs are
really only applicable or available during the restore process.
And I would wonder about the results if you made a copy of the files of
those supplementary CDs on a CD you configured as bootable. That might
interfere with the restore process, because things may not be where the
restore expects them to be.
> I also have a copy of an old win98 OS I saved onto a disk but it isn't

Usually those won't be of any help at all, particularly if the XP system
installs an NTFS filesystem. DOS/Win9x/ME can't read NTFS filesystems.
A boot floppy can be of value if it has CD drivers, so that you can get to a
location with the i386 folder to run winnt.exe and hence start Setup.

No, it's not a batch file. CDs, like other disks, require special files
in very specific locations on the disk. There are more settings that have
to be addressed, such as emulation, number of sectors, and load segment.
It's not incredibly difficult with software capable of making bootable CDs,
but not all CD burning software *is* capable of doing this properly. If
the settings are wrong, the disk will not boot.
Here's some information on the general topic:
http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/
As to the CDs you have that aren't bootable, there is likely no need for
them to be. They are likely intended for use only during a restore
process, when the system is already booted. And making a bootable copy
might interfere with the restore operation.

Oh no great. Every one of those 5 cds have an i386 directory and nothing
is in them like the windows\i386 on my machine. They're all app restores and
no invisible files show up that are worth anything. I don't know why
emachines thinks I am interested in all their applications I remove them all
and just use xp.

You do neither.
Winnt32.exe is the Windows version of the setup launcher. You have to
already be *in windows* to use this.
If you've booted from a diskette or similar, you would run "winnt.exe" to
start Windows XP (or 2000) setup.
You do not run setup.exe directly.

These do not appy to XP boot disks, and won't allow you to access NTFS
volumes.
> But what is the auto.inf format?
An autorun.inf file is basically a text file that tells a CD what to run
and where it is, passing any parameters.

Windows XP >> bootable CDs
Hi Bill,
For the two Dell PCs that I have, each came with an OEM version of
the XP Home Operating system. Mine say: "Reinstallation CD. Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2."
One of the first things I did was to use the burning software -- in my case
Roxio/Sonic -- and used the "Copy Disk" feature.
This created a bootable Windows XP CD.

Don't work that way with CDs or DVDs. What you generally "see" on CD or DVD
is written in ISO format or some extension thereof for data. The bootable
portion is not visible in XP or any prior version of windows. Last I looked
there's 2 general ways to make a CD/DVD bootable. None of which can be done
with XP, or msdos.
You can't modify a closed session CD like you have now that's written to a
write-once media.

- Windows XP >> Networked printer suddenly sticks in queueSETUP:
I have a network with a desktop connected to the router, and two
laptops that connect wirelessly. All systems are running Windows XP Pro,
and are all set to the same workgroup. The desktop has a Lexmark Z45
printer attached via USB, and the printer is shared.
PROBLEM:
Everyone was able to print to the shared printer, but recently, the
laptops can send a print job, but it just sticks in the queue. The
desktop can still print, after you wait for the queue to clear out, of
course.
HAVE TRIED:
I have uninstalled the printer from all three computers, downloaded new
drivers (just fresh ones, there weren't updates), and set it up from
scratch again. Everyone sees and connects to the printer with no issues
and the desktop can print....but the laptops' jobs still get stuck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

something very bizzare
it comes with a PCMCIA wireless network adapter, only thing thats on it is
model nuimber wa1220, funny thing is that it will only connect to my router
when the laptop is running on batteries, and as soon as i plug in the AC
power it disconects again, the card still works as it can see my network, it
just cant connect to it
anyone got any ideas on this one, ive been googling all night but found
nothing even remotly close to this

- Windows XP Security >> Windows security screen screenshotWe're trying to make a handout to give to users to allow
them to change the local admin password and need a
screenshot of the "Windows Security" dialog box that comes
up when you press ctrl alt del. We are unable to do a
print screen and were wondering if anyone has a screenshot
of the box or a way for us to do it.
