- Windows XP Hardware >> Locked Out! Despite Having The Right Password!Help!
All of a sudden I can no longer login to my Admin account.
I get an error message to the effect that account have been locked out
due to 3 unsuccessful attempts.
Several hours later I try again and I was able to get in except that I
got another message to the effect that the security log is full. I
emptied the security log and created another admin account.
I'm still finding a problem logging in with both of them.
Any idea as to how can this happen and also how do I resolve it.
Thank you very much
Mike

- Windows XP Network >> Network Setup Wizard doesn't workI have Windows XP Home (w/ SP2 installed) on my PC. I'm trying to set up a
network where wireless connecting laptops can use the printer that is USB
connected to the PC. The PC and laptops are sharing the internet connection
through a wireless router (Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G). The
shortcuts/links in my control panel, "Network Setup Wizard" and "Set up a
home or small office network", do not do anything. It's as if the program no
longer exists on my PC. I've tried to locate the Network Setup Wizard
program on the Windows XP cd, but have had no luck finding the executable
file to run (i.e. re-install this program). I've also created a networking
profile on a USB storage device from a laptop and tried installing/extracting
it on the PC...but this was only a profile for the PC to use to create the
network settings more quickly. Can anyone help me with getting the Network
Setup Wizard working again or at least re-installing it without re-installing
Windows XP?

- Windows XP Network >> File / printer sharingI managed to set up my desktop and laptop as a network. Then I installed
sp1 and it said to re-run the network setup. So I did, and I haven't been
able to share files/printers since. I am currently running xp home sp2 on
both systems. They are hooked to a D-Link DI-604 router which is then
connected to a D-link ADSL modem.
Both see the internet. They essentially set themselves up. I did however
run the Networking Wizard. They are both Sony computers. I have run their
test software and it says the problem is the network card. I believe it
probably has something to do with a security setting. The Win firewall is
disabled - Trend Pccillin monitors. Even if I switch or completely
disable - the result has so far been the same. The laptop has Norton's
Antivirus. Both allow File and Print sharing on Windows firewall, Trend has
low security for homenetworking. I think I'm officially lost. (I tried to
post through IE at the website - but there seems to be a pop up blocker
somewhere I don't know about.)
The desktop can ping the router, and itself, but not the laptop. The laptop
can ping the router.

Clicking finish on the install wizard closes it but the wizard returns on

- Windows XP >> WinXP Explorer crashesHi,
This problem has been posted before, but never with much detail and all of
the suggested fixes have been ineffective.
Explorer will suddenly close, usually after doing something like opening a
file directory. There is no windows error message. Explorer will restart and
about half of the system icons in the lower right will have disappeared. I
realize that I can simply log off and log back in, but I'd rather fix the
problem if possible.
This has been going on for a few weeks now. My windowsupdate is up-to-date.
No viruses or spyware on my system. Any advice would be most appreciated

Matthew Clark

- Windows XP Support >> shutdown problemI am having a shutdown problems with windows xp that I have not been able to
find a solution for.
Very frequently, though not always, when I try to shutdown or restart
windows I get a series of "program not responding dialogs." The series is
generally the same. With my desktop still present I get this dialog for the
following programs: "network associates error reporting service," "McAfee
updater," "Hsm Sink Window," "Ati tray icon application," "DIEmWin," "Acrobat
try icon," and "kmw_run.exe" If I choose to end each of these tasks, then
windows proceeds to the shutdown screen where it hangs again. Then I get two
more "program not responding dialogs": "ctfmon.exe" and "explorer.exe."
After ending these two tasks my computer finally shuts down.
I know what each of these programs is except "DIEmWin" and "Hsm Sink
Window." I'm not sure if the problem is with one of these programs--I have
googled them both and had a difficult time finding out what they are. Or
perhaps the problem is with McAfee Virus Scanner, since the first two program
are associated with it. Or maybe the problem has to do with something else
entirely and these are just symptoms.
Any advice on how to solve or troubleshoot this problem would be greatly
appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> windows explorer "search" function problemI have an issue with the "search" function in Windows Explorer.
Clicking on "more advanced options" yields a drop-down box showing all the
different types of files known to my computer. The problem is that there is
not a line for "all types." This line exists in other computers and probably
did at one time on mine. The effect is that after I do a search, this block
is filled in with a "type of file" that matches something in the "found"
list. On a subsequent search, I can't erase this and have to restart Windows
Explorer.
Is there something I can do about this to restore the "all types" option?
